NFL News and Notes - July 24th, 2008

Only 54 draft picks remain unsigned, 40 of whom are 1st and 2nd rounders. Something tells me today will be filled with rookie signings.

Got a fairly busy morning ahead of me, so it's just the links today.

When the New England Patriots open training camp today, they'll likely do so
without first-round linebacker Jerod Mayo, who remains unsigned. A potential Super Bowl hangover and the offensive line are two of the six key issues facing the Patriots this summer, according to Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald.

The Miami Dolphins plan on easing running back Ronnie Brown back into action as he comes back from a torn ACL.

New York Jets quarterback Chad Pennington isn't interested in carrying a clipboard. The Jets will hold shorter practices this summer.

Cincinnati Bengals special teams coach Darin Simmons thinks Glenn Holt will likely be the team's kick returner, but he's got to improve his ball security.

Cleveland Browns Ross Tucker and Joe Jurevicius were placed on the PUP list. Browns quarterback Brady Quinn is handling his role well, but admits he's hungry to play football.

The Baltimore Ravens feel they may have gotten a steal when they used a third-round pick on rookie linebacker Tavares Gooden.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin held a pre-training camp press conference on Wednesday.

Jacksonville Jaguars players are scheduled to report to training camp tomorrow and defensive ends Derrick Harvey and Quentin Groves, the team's top two draft picks, remain unsigned.

"No reason to rush me back", says Indianapolis Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney. "When it matters, I'll be ready to go, without a doubt." Freeney is returning from a Lisfranc injury to his left foot.

The Tennessee Titans and franchised defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth continue to talk about a one-year deal to get him into camp on time. Training camp is a great opportunity for Titans fans to see and interact with the players.

Denver Broncos wide receiver Rod Smith will officially retire today. Smith was Denver's working-class football hero, writes Mark Kiszla. Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall met with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in New York last Friday.

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson doesn't want to hear the "R" word. Expected Chiefs starters will get more playing time during the pre-season.

The San Diego Chargers released wide receiver Eric Parker on Wednesday. Chargers defensive end Luis Castillo got his contract extension, but what about Igor?

The Oakland Raiders have told running back LaMont Jordan to not report to training camp. Exclusive franchise cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha unexpectedly reported to Raiders camp.

To the Dallas Cowboys, it's all about getting to Tampa. Three Cowboys draft picks remain unsigned.

Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger presents his "State of the Giants" training camp preview. Giants tight ends coach Mike Pope is sad to see Jeremy Shockey go.

Washington Redskins wide receiver Santana Moss is healthy and will have much responsibility in the team's new offense. The Redskins cornerbacks will get up close and personal with opposing wideouts this season.

Brian Westbrook Watch is on at Philadelphia Eagles training camp. The Eagletarian blog doesn't get the whole "Brett Favre to Philadelphia" news-like item that surfaced yesterday on ESPN.

Chicago Bears return specialist Devin Hester says he's prepared for the long haul as he seeks a new contract. Bears center Olin Kreutz had surgery to clear scar tissue in his Achilles' tendon, but expects to return before the regular season.

Nicholas Cotsonika of the Detroit Free Press has no issue with the military's policy, but he does think that the Army bungled the Caleb Campbell situation.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has urged Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson to find a suitable trade partner to resolve the Brett Favre situation. The Packers have had substantive talks about a new contract for running back Ryan Grant.

Some Minnesota Vikings veterans hadn't checked into training camp before media access was cut off.

The Atlanta Falcons may have two new starting cornerbacks this season.

Carolina Panthers offensive lineman Travelle Wharton is moving to left guard. Panthers cornerback Richard Marshall would love to play linebacker.

The three-year contract extension New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marques Colston agreed to yesterday is a "bridge" between his rookie deal and a third contract he'll sign before turning 30. Does tight end Jeremy Shockey make the Saints offense "scary good"?

Rick Stroud of the St. Petersburg Times looks at the reasons why the Tampa Bay Buccaneers can successfully defend their NFC South crown, and reasons why they won't.

The only player missing from Arizona Cardinals training camp is first-round cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Cardinals nose tackle Gabe Watson doesn't appear to be close to returning from a fractured kneecap.

It's up to the Seattle Seahawks to provide some enjoyment for the Seattle sports fan, writes Steve Kelley of the Seattle Times.

Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch looks at the eight players who have to play well in order for the Rams to succeed this season.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan may have the hottest seat of all the NFL head coaches.

Another 2008 NFL Rookie Signing Update

Five days from now, all 32 NFL training camps will be in full swing. Still, 73 draft choices remain unsigned, including 45 from the first two rounds. Here's a round-by-round look at the unsigned draft picks, with the morning links below.

Round 1: 24 of 31 picks remain unsigned
Round 2: 21 of 32 picks remain unsigned
Round 3: 6 of 36 picks remain unsigned
Round 4: 8 of 36 picks remain unsigned
Round 5: 5 of 31 picks remain unsigned
Round 6: 7 of 31 picks remain unsigned
Round 7: 2 of 45 picks remain unsigned

NFL News and Notes

Who is Randy Moss? New England Patriots offensive tackle Nick Kazcur plead guilty to speeding, paid a $355 fine, and the misdemeanor drug charges will be dismissed if he stays out of trouble for six months. Kaczur was caught with 202 OxyContin pills during a traffic stop in upstate New York. The Patriots signed second-round cornerback Terrence Wheatley on Tuesday.

Rookie free agent tackle Pedro Sosa (Rutgers) worked out for the Miami Dolphins yesterday.

The New York Jets signed free agent cornerback Ahmad Carroll, a former first-round pick of the Green Bay Packers.

Cincinnati Bengals president Mike Brown joined the Carson Palmer/USC-Ohio State fray on Tuesday. The Bengals special teams in 2007 weren't so special.

The Cleveland Browns agreed to four-year contracts with all five of their draft picks on Tuesday. For the Browns to reach their goals, quarterback Derek Anderson has to play better on the road.

How do the Baltimore Ravens quarterbacks match-up against one another? Ravens cornerback Samari Rolle will miss the start of training camp to attend his father's funeral.

The Houston Texans waived tackle Charles Spencer, who is coming back from a devastating knee injury sustained in Week 2 of the 2006 NFL season. Spencer will be missed, but plans on continuing his football career.

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Jerry Porter didn't have surgery on his hamstring sooner because the club had hoped it would heal on its own.

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison got the green light to participate in training camp. Six Colts, including Peyton Manning, Dwight Freeney and Bob Sanders, will begin training camp on the physically unable to perform list. Two days after being drafted by the Colts, second-round pick Mike Pollak was getting a jump on his position change.

Lights were installed on one of the Tennessee Titans practice fields, allowing the team to practice at night.

Denver Broncos fourth-round cornerback Jack Williams agreed to a contract and wants to contribute now. Broncos quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates was born to coach.

The Kansas City Chiefs are close to a contract with second-round cornerback Brandon Flowers.

San Diego Chargers defensive end Luis Castillo agreed to a five-year contract extension that could be worth as much as $43.1 million dollars. Chargers center Nick Hardwick expects to begin training camp on the PUP list.

Steve Corkran of the San Jose Mercury News looks at the five key issues facing the Oakland Raiders as they open training camp.

Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News has seven questions for the Dallas Cowboys to answer during their training camp.

The New York Giants and first-round safety Kenny Phillips agreed to a five-year contract on Tuesday. Phillips deal could be worth as much as $11.15 million dollars. When Giants fans wonder "Who will replace Shockey", they shouldn't forget about Darcy Johnson.

The three seasons since Donovan McNabb led the Philadelphia Eagles to the Super Bowl have been disasterous, and McNabb begins his 10th season at the crossroads of his NFL career. The Eagles insist that having three experienced starting cornerbacks isn't going to be a problem. Still, you've got to expect that the moment a team loses a starting cornerback this summer, the Eagles are going to be the first team they call.

Age and health are the main issues facing the Washington Redskins offensive line. Redskins head coach Jim Zorn praised running back Clinton Portis' committment to the team's off-season workout program.

Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher said that the nine-year, $56.65 million dollar contract he signed in 2003, was a mistake. Brandon Lloyd and Devin Hester will be the Bears' first-team wide receivers at the start of training camp.

Detroit Lions president Matt Millen eased Lions' fans fears by saying that they "will like what they see" from the 2008 team he's assembled. (Phew! Glad that's over with.) The Lions would like to have free agent linebacker Takeo Spikes signed before training camp begins tomorrow. The Lions agreed to three-year contracts with rookies Kevin Smith, Andre Fluellen, Kenneth Moore, Jerome Felton, Landon Cohen and Caleb Campbell on Tuesday. Only first-round tackle Gosder Cherilus and second-round linebacker Jordon Dizon remain unsigned.

The Green Bay Packers need to find a left guard this summer, with Allen Barbre and Daryn Colledge competing for that starting job. The age of the Packers cornerbacks is a concern.

Even with high expectations swirling around him, Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress has found a comfort zone as he enters his third season at the helm of an NFL team. The Star Tribune has four position battles to watch in Vikings camp this summer.

The Atlanta Falcons added Doug Plank, the head coach of the Arena Football League's Georgia Force, to work as a coaching assistant.

Carolina Panthers second-round safety Charles Godfrey agreed to a four-year contract on Tuesday. Godfrey is expected to start immediately. Panthers tackle Jordan Gross wants to be a stay-at-home dad when his playing days are over.

Mike Triplett of the Times-Picayune breaks down the New Orleans Saints roster position-by-position. Saints defensive end Charles Grant will be arraigned on involuntary manslaughter charges on August 15th. Grant will plead not guilty.

Former New Orleans Saints and Oakland Raiders quarterback Aaron Brooks is surprised he's not on an NFL team. (I, however, remain unfazed by this.)

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers haven't ruled out acquiring retired quarterback Brett Favre. Buccaneers third-round offensive lineman Jeremy Zuttah agreed to a four-year contract on Tuesday night.

Unlike last year, the Arizona Cardinals are not starting training camp from scratch. First-round cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie won't be in attendance when the Cardinals open training camp today.

Top draft picks Lawrence Jackson and John Carlson weren't among the Seattle Seahawks rookies who reported to training camp on Tuesday. The Seahawks are confident both will be signed in time for the first practice on Friday.

St. Louis Rams rookie defensive end Chris Long can't comprehend the size of his contract. Remember, folks, it's not like Long grew up clipping coupons out of the penny saver.

San Francisco 49ers third-round cornerback Reggie Smith signed a four-year deal on Tuesday.

2008 NFL Rookie Signing Status Update

One training camp (Washington Redskins) is underway already, and by next Monday, all 32 NFL training camps will have begun.

NFL News and Notes

Going to the Super Bowl is the only goal for the Dallas Cowboys in 2008. Tim Cowlishaw lists 10 potential roadblocks the Cowboys will face on their way to that goal. (Interesting that, to Cowlishaw, a certain NFC team that has made 5 straight trips to the playoffs, beat Dallas in the playoffs recently, and is on the Cowboys '08 schedule, isn't one of the potential "roadblocks")

How the Seattle Seahawks fare in head coach Mike Holmgren's final season will depend on Holmgren's area of expertise.

St. Louis Rams first-round pick Chris Long agreed to a contract on Saturday. Bill Coats lists the 15 things to be excited about as the Rams open training camp this week.

John Crumpacker previews the San Francisco 49ers roster.

Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle approves of the additions the Houston Texans made this off-season.
