Jets Sign DE Jay Richardson

The New York Jets confirmed the signing of free agent safety DeAngelo Smith and announced the signing of free agent defensive end Jay Richardson.

Terms were not disclosed.

Richardson entered the NFL as a 2007 fifth round pick out of Ohio State by the Oakland Raiders who has 117 tackles, seven sacks and a pass defensed in his 55-game career with the Raiders (2007-09) and Seattle Seahawks, where he appeared in seven regular season and two post-season games during the 2010 season.

The 6-foot-6, 280-pound defensive end worked out for the Detroit Lions last August, but did not receive a contract offer and was out of football during the 2011 season.

Richardson has the size and strength to play the "5" technique in the Jets' 3-4 defense, but will have to outplay Marcus Dixon and Ropati Pitoitua to earn a roster spot.
