Jaguars Release Punters Nick Harris, Spencer Lanning

The Jacksonville Jaguars have released punters Nick Harris and Spencer Lanning, Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union reports.

Jacksonville selected Cal punter Bryan Anger in the third round (70th overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft, making both Harris and Lanning expendable. The 6-foot-4, 208-pound Anger had a gross average of over 44 yards per punt in 2011 and 43.7 yards on 253 career punts at Cal.

A longtime member of the Detroit Lions, Harris replaced Matt Turk midway through the 2011 season, averaging 37.9 yards on 72 punts over the final 11 weeks of the season. During his 170-game career, which began as a fourth round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals, Harris has averaged 35.7 yards on 876 punts.

Harris had signed a one-year, $990,000 contract with the Jaguars on March 12. That deal included a $65,000 signing bonus, which will still be applied to the Jaguars' salary cap. Lanning was signed to a one-year, $390,000 contract and will be subject to waivers.
