Dolphins Finalizing Deals With Mike Sherman, Kevin Coyle

The Miami Dolphins are finalizing deals with offensive coordinator Mike Sherman and defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle, Omar Kelly of the Sun-Sentinel reports.

A head coaching candidate with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and offensive coordinator candidate with the Cleveland Browns, the 57-year-old Sherman gave Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin his first NFL coaching opportunity as an assistant offensive line coach with the Green Bay Packers in 2003.

Philbin added coaching tight ends to his list of duties in 2004 and remained on staff after the Packers dismissed Sherman following the 2005 season. Overall, Sherman was 59-43 in his six seasons with the Packers, and after two seasons as an assistant with the Houston Texans became the head coach of the Texas A&M program in 2008.

Sherman has also coached tight ends with the Packers (1997-98) and was the Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator in 1999. In Miami, Sherman replaces Brian Daboll and inherits an offense that ranked 22nd in total offense -- 11th in rushing offense, 23rd in passing offense -- and were 20th in scoring offense with a 20.6 points per game average.

Coyle, 56, has spent his entire 11-year NFL coaching career with the Cincinnati Bengals, spending the last nine as the team's defensive backs coach. Croyle spent 15 years as a defensive coordinator in college stops with Fresno State, Maryland, Syracuse and Holy Cross.

Coyle replaces Mike Nolan, who accepted the same position with the Atlanta Falcons. The Dolphins ranked 15th in total defense last season, but were third against the run and sixth in scoring defense. One area Coyle could improve upon is the pass defense, which ranked 25th in passing yards allowed per game.
