Patriots Claim CB Antwaun Molden

The New England Patriots have claimed cornerback Antwaun Molden off waivers, Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston reports.

A third-round pick out of Eastern Kentucky by the Houston Texans in 2008, Molden had 28 tackles in 32 games before he was waived by the Texans on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Molden is due $600,000 in base salary in 2011, the final year of his rookie contract. New England's corresponding transaction is not yet known.

Rams Re-Sign WR Mark Clayton

The St. Louis Rams announced that they have re-signed veteran wide receiver Mark Clayton.

Acquired last September from the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for a sixth-round pick, Clayton quickly became a favorite target of quarterback Sam Bradford, catching 22 passes for 300 yards and a pair of touchdowns over the first four weeks of the season before a torn patellar tendon landed the former first-round pick out of Oklahoma on injured reserve in Week 5.

Clayton, 29, had hoped to re-sign with the Rams, but the club was waiting for his knee to improve before signing a contract.

In addition to Clayton, the Rams signed well-traveled defensive tackle Marlon Favorite on Wednesday. To make room for Clayton and Favorite, cornerbacks Marquis Johnson (knee) was placed on the "Reserve/PUP" list and Jerome Murphy (ankle) was placed on injured reserve.

Falcons Agree To Terms With CB Kelvin Hayden

The Atlanta Falcons have agreed to terms with free agent cornerback Kelvin Hayden, Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network reports.

Those terms were not disclosed and the Falcons will be required to make a corresponding transaction to add Hayden, as well as safety James Sanders, who agreed to a one-year deal on Tuesday night.

A second-round pick out of Illinois by the Indianapolis Colts in 2005, Hayden has started 46 of his 77 career games, totaling 298 tackles and nine interceptions. Hayden has not played a full 16-game season since 2007, missing 18 regular season games over the last three seasons.

Due $6.105 million in base salary this upcoming season, the Colts released Hayden in late July.

Hayden adds veteran depth behind starting cornerbacks Dunta Robinson and Brent Grimes.

Bengals OT Andrew Whitworth Agrees To Two-Year Extension

Cincinnati Bengals left tackle Andrew Whitworth has signed a two-year contract extension, Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Andrew Brandt of the National Football Post reports the two years contains $20 million in new money.

A second-round pick out of LSU by the Bengals in 2006, Whitworth has started 70 of his 74 games, including a streak of 32 consecutive starts. Whitworth had three years and nearly $11 million remaining on his current contract, which he signed prior to the 2008 season, and is now under contract through the 2015 season.

"You want to extend the guys who you know are committed to the program," said Whitworth, who also serves at the Bengals' player rep. "It’s good to see the hard work you put in and to be able to get it to work for both sides."

NFL Reviewing Falcons' Salary Cap Status

In 2009, the last capped season under the 2006 collective bargaining agreement, the Atlanta Falcons took a $6.9 hit against their salary cap after releasing imprisoned quarterback Michael Vick.

With Vick signing a six-year, $100 million contract (actually five-years, $80 million) and the Falcons being Vick's largest creditor, Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reports that the Falcons could receive salary cap credits as the money owed is paid off.

"It is being reviewed," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution via email. "No determination has been made."

According to a league source, the Falcons' adjusted cap number in 2011 is $123.375 million. Jeff Schultz of the AJC writes that the Falcons are owed $7.5 million, with Darren Rovell of CNBC reporting that Vick's creditors will be paid on percentages of what Vick makes over the next four seasons.

That could lead to a few million in cap credits for the Falcons over the next four seasons, which could come in handy with cornerback Brent Grimes and middle linebacker Curtis Lofton set to become free agents in 2012.

Peyton Hillis Hopes To Remain In Cleveland

With Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Thomas locked up for the long-term running back Peyton Hillis may be next in line for a contract extension, Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports.

Acquired from the Denver Broncos in the Brady Quinn trade, the former seventh-round pick out of Arkansas had a breakout season in 2010. The 6-foot-1, 246-pound Hillis had 270 carries for 1,177 yards and 11 touchdowns and caught 61 passes for 418 yards and two touchdowns out of the backfield.

Prior to last season, Hillis had 99 touches combined in 26 games in Denver.

Hillis has changed agents twice this season, replacing James Sexton with Kelli Masters, who was subsequently replaced by Kennard McGuire. Not only does Hillis have newfound fame -- his image graces the cover of EA Sports' Madden '12 videogame -- Hillis has found a home in Cleveland.

"Most definitely. I think this team, this city, even the colors, represent who I am. As an individual, as a person and as a player," Hillis said. "So I would love to be here as long the Browns want me here."

Hillis is scheduled to earn $600,000 in 2011, which less than what Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson will make per week ($630,589, 1/17th of $10.72 million) this upcoming season.

Bengals RB Cedric Benson Begins Jail Sentence

On Monday, Cincinnati Bengals running back Cedric Benson plead no contest to assault charges in Austin, Texas and was sentenced to 20 days in jail, which with credits for good behavior, would be reduced to seven days with good behavior.

Benson was originally scheduled to serve the sentence during the Bengals' bye week in October, but Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Benson surrendered to the Travis County Jail on Tuesday evening.

The 28-year-old Benson, who signed a one-year, $3.25 million contract with the Bengals earlier this month, was not scheduled to play in Thursday night's preseason finale against the Indianapolis Colts.

By arriving before midnight on Tuesday, Benson will receive credit for a day served and will likely be released late on Monday, September 5, meaning he'll be back in Cincinnati by Wednesday as the Bengals begin preparations for the season-opener against the Cleveland Browns.

James Sanders Agrees To One-Year Deal With Falcons

Free agent safety James Sanders has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

A fourth-round pick by the New England Patriots out of Fresno State in 2005, Sanders has been a part-time starter in New England over the last six seasons. Over 84 games, including 50 starts, Sanders has 301 tackles, one quarterback sack and eight interceptions, including a career-high three in 2010.

Sanders was due $2.8 million in base salary in 2011, the final year of his current contract, but was released on Monday. Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff was the Patriots' Director of College Scouting when Sanders entered the league.

Had Sanders not reached a deal with the Falcons, he was scheduled to visit with the Kansas City Chiefs, whose general manager Scott Pioli, was New England's Vice President of Player Personnel when Sanders was drafted.

49ers, Frank Gore Agree On Three-Year Extension

The San Francisco 49ers and running back Frank Gore have agreed on a three-year, $21 million extension, Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reports.

According to Florio, the deal includes $13.5 million in guaranteed money.

Gore was due to earn $4.9 million in 2011, the final season of his four-year, $27.577 million extension from 2007.

The 28-year-old running back is coming off a fractured hip that limited him to just 11 games in 2010 and ended the two-time Pro Bowlers streak of 1,000-yard seasons at four. Gore has also added 270 receptions for 2,283 yards and nine touchdowns during his six-year career.

Seahawks TE John Carlson To Have Season-Ending Shoulder Surgery

Seattle Seahawks tight end John Carlson will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder, head coach Pete Carroll announced on Tuesday.

"That's a big loss for us," said Carroll.

A second-round pick out of Notre Dame in 2008, Carlson has 137 receptions for 1,519 yards and 13 touchdowns during his 47-game career with the Seahawks. Carlson averaged 53 receptions for 600 yards and six touchdowns over his first two seasons in the NFL before catching just 31 balls for 318 yards and one score last season.

The 27-year-old Carlson had played in 79.8 percent of the Seahawks' offensive plays over the last three seasons, but was expected to be the No. 2 tight end behind Pro Bowler Zach Miller, who was signed to a five-year, $34 million contract that included $17 million in guarantees earlier this month.

Carlson is entering the final year of his contract and had changed agents during the lockout. Joe Flanagan of BTI Advisors was hired, replacing Mark Humenik of Athlete's First, who negotiated Carlson's four-year, $4.5 million rookie contract.

Falcons Sign Center Brett Romberg

The Atlanta Falcons placed six players on waivers and added a veteran center on Tuesday.

Waived were wide receivers Tim Buckley and Doug Beaumont, running back Phillip Sylvester, cornerback Kirk Belgrave, and linebackers LaMarcus Thompson and Youri Yenga.

Veteran Brett Romberg was signed to an undisclosed contract. The 31-year-old former undrafted free agent out of the University of Miami has started 18 of 42 games during a seven-year career with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2003-06), St. Louis Rams (2006-08), and Falcons, where he appeared in nine games in 2009 before he was released last September.

Earlier today, head coach Mike Smith said that knee surgery will end center Todd McClure's streak of 144 consecutive starts in Week 1.

"Right now, Todd will not play in the game against Chicago," Smith said Tuesday. "He has been ruled out for that game, and we hope to have a better idea in terms of his rehabilitation. The procedure went well, and he is in very good spirits. If there is anybody who can get back quicker than the timeline, it’s Todd McClure. I have every confidence in that."

2010 fourth-round pick Joe Hawley is expected to start at center for McClure.

Five-Years, $80 Million For Michael Vick

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick's six-year, $100 million contract extension is actually a five-year, $80 million contract, Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reports.

The sixth and final season of the deal would void if he participates in 35 percent of the offensive snaps in any year before 2016.

Most $100 million contracts are never really $100 million contracts, so it was unreasonable to expect Vick's to be any different. Still, at $16 million year, Vick's deal ranks fourth behind Tom Brady ($18.007M), Peyton Manning ($18M), and Eli Manning ($16.25M) on the richest quarterback contracts in league history.

Florio also reports that the guaranteed portion of the contract -- reported to be $40 million -- is actually $35.5 million, with $32.5 fully guaranteed for skill, injury, and cap. I'll wait to see the structure and language of the deal for myself before casting judgment, but with Vick scheduled to receive $48 million over the next three seasons, it looks like a very solid deal to me.

Chargers Release LS David Binn; Waive Nine

To reach the 80-man roster limit, the San Diego Chargers have parted ways with longtime long-snapper David Binn and placed nine players on waivers.

Binn had been with the Chargers since 1994 and had handled the snapping for 256 of 257 games before he was injured in the 2010 regular season-opener against the Kansas City Chiefs. The 39-year-old was scheduled to earn $1.1 million in base salary in 2011, the final year of his contract.

"This was a hard decision; one of our most difficult," Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said of releasing Binn. "David has been the ultimate professional. He’s a team-first guy and a perfectionist at his craft. His hard work and dedication made him one of the best long snappers ever to play the game."

Second-year long-snapper Mike Windt, who joined the Chargers last October, is expected to be the snapper in 2011.

Waived on Tuesday were cornerback Stephen Harrison, wide receivers Vidal Hazelton, Cameron Kenney and Travon Patterson, guard Michael Huey, linebacker Jeremy Leman, tackle Ryan Otterson and running backs Shawnbrey McNeal and Brandon Sullivan.

Cowboys Place Rookie LB Bruce Carter, K Kai Forbath On "Reserve/NFI"

The Dallas Cowboys have placed second-round linebacker Bruce Carter and undrafted rookie kicker Kai Forbath on the "Reserve/Non-Football Injury" list, reducing their roster to 80 players before today's 4pm ET deadline, Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas reports.

By being placed on the "Reserve/Non-Football Injury" list, both players are ineligible to play in the first six weeks of the 2011 regular season.

Selected with the 40th overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft out of the University of North Carolina, the 6-foot-1, 243-pound Carter tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee last November. As essentially a four-year starter at outside linebacker, Carter totaled 215 tackles, including 24 for a loss and 8.5 quarterback sacks, with three interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns.

Forbath went undrafted out of UCLA, and injured his right quadriceps during the lockout, but was signed by the Cowboys late last month. Forbath was successful on 84.2 percent of his 101 field goal attempts during his four-year career with the Bruins, earning All-American honors after the 2009 season.

Raiders Slice Eight From Roster

Steve Corkran of the Contra Costa Times reports the Oakland Raiders have reduced their roster to 80 players in advance of today's 4pm ET deadline.

Fullback Bryson Kelly, wide receivers Damola Adeniji and Steve Goulet, offensive linemen Ben Lamaak and Lou Eliades, and defensive tackle Derrick Hill were waived.

Veteran safety Josh Bullocks was released and linebacker Travis Goethel and offensive lineman Alan Pelc were placed on injured reserve.

Saints Release DE Alex Brown

Veteran defensive end Alex Brown announced on Twitter that he had been released by the New Orleans Saints.

"It saddens me to say that I have been released from the Saints because their [sic] a first class organization," Brown wrote.

After being released by the Chicago Bears April, Brown signed a two-year, $5.75 million contract with the Saints. Brown started 16 games for the Saints last season, totaling 39 tackles and a pair of quarterback sacks, the lowest total of his nine-year career.

Brown was due $3 million in base salary this season.

In addition to Brown, the Saints have placed rookie wide receivers John Chiles and Jarred Fayson and safety DeAndre McDaniel on waivers.

Panthers Reach 80-Man Roster Limit

Injuries played a large role in getting the Carolina Panthers to the 80-man roster limit on Tuesday.

Wide receiver David Gettis, tight end Gary Barnidge, offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz, and sixth-round center Zack Williams were placed on injured reserve. Long-snapper Chris Massey, signed last week, was also released.

Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer reports second-year quarterback Tony Pike was "waived/injured" (elbow) and the club made an unspecified, injury-related transaction with third-year guard Duke Robinson.

Regarding Pike, his four-year rookie contract contained the standard split salaries in the first two years of the deal. (A split contract pays the player at a reduced rate if he is on the injured reserve list) Pike's 2011 split could have voided if he were on the Panthers' 53-man roster at the end of his rookie season, but he was placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury last December.

Browns To Place G Eric Steinbach On IR

Cleveland Browns left guard Eric Steinbach is expected to be placed on injured reserve today, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports.

The 31-year-old guard has a herniated disc in his back that may require surgery.

A second-round pick out of Iowa by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2003, Steinbach has started 124 of his 125 games during his eight-year career. Steinbach signed a seven-year, $49 million contract with the Browns in 2007. That contract includes a $6.25 million base salary this season.

2011 fifth-round offensive lineman Jason Pinkston is the leading candidate to replace Steinbach. Offseason acquisitions John Greco, acquired via a trade with the St. Louis Rams, and Oniel Cousins, who was claimed off waivers on Monday, also in the mix for the spot between Alex Mack and perennial Pro Bowler Joe Thomas.

49ers Reduce Roster By Seven

The San Francisco 49ers have trimmed their roster, announcing the release of seven players on Tuesday.

Running back Seth Smith, wide receivers Kevin Jurovich and Tyler Beiler, offensive linemen Donovan Edwards and guard Nick Howell, linebacker Scott McKillop, and punter Sam Paulescu have been placed on waivers.

Smith, Beiler, and Edwards were undrafted rookie free agents in 2011, with Beiler receiving $7,500 to sign with the 49ers. Beiler did not appear in any of the team's preseason games this summer.

McKillop was a 2009 fifth-round pick who posted 15 special teams tackles as a rookie, but spent 2010 on injured reserve with a torn ACL.

The moves reduce the 49ers' roster to 79, which is one below the 80-man limit all teams must be at by 4pm ET.

Vick's Creditors To Be Paid Off By 2014

Last night, the Philadelphia Eagles and quarterback Michael Vick agreed to terms on a six-year, $100 million contract that includes nearly $40 million in guarantees. As Darren Rovell of CNBC notes, the happiest people about the deal might be the creditors Vick owes over $20 million to.

Rovell reports that over the next four seasons, Vick will receive a $300,000 annual allowance, well below the $375,000 league minimum salary, leaving nearly $10 million for his creditors to pick through.

Vick is allowed any money left over, but after payments to his ex-girlfriend, mother, lawyer and accounting fees, would make about $1.85 million, or 11 percent of his $17 million annual payout.

Jets To Release K Nick Novak

The New York Jets will release kicker Nick Novak today, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports.

Novak's release means that Nick Folk has won the preseason kicking competition and gets the Jets to the 80-man roster limit.

The 30-year-old Novak did not miss a kick during the preseason, connecting on two field goal attempts (from 30 and 35 yards) and all three of extra point attempts. Folk, 26, was 4-for-5 on field goal attempts, missing from 43 yards out in the Jets' 27-7 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on August 21.

Folk was 30-of-39 on field goal attempts with a long of 56 yards in 2010, his first season with the club. Folk signed a one-year, $735,000 contract with the Jets on July 29.

Andre Gurode To Visit Seahawks

Free agent center Andre Gurode is generating interest from six teams on the free agent market, and ESPN's John Clayton reports that his first visit will be with the Seattle Seahawks.

Seahawks offensive line coach Tom Cable briefly coached Gurode at the University of Colorado.

The 33-year-old Gurode is a five-time Pro Bowler who is coming off knee surgery. Gurode was released on Monday after declining to restructure his $5.5 million base salary for 2011.

Third-year offensive lineman Max Unger, a 2009 second-round pick who missed all but one game in 2010 with a toe injury, is currently starting at the center position in between veteran Robert Gallery and 2011 third-round pick John Moffitt. Unger primarily played right guard as a rookie in 2009 (843 of his 1,043 snaps were at right guard) and could slide over to that spot with Gurode playing center.

Saints Close To Signing K John Kasay

The New Orleans Saints are close to signing veteran kicker John Kasay, Scott Fowler of the Charlotte Observer reports.

Kasay, who turns 42 in October, was released by the Carolina Panthers after they signed Olindo Mare to a four-year, $12 million contract in July. During Kasay's 19-year career, including four seasons with the Seattle Seahawks and the last 15 seasons with the Panthers, Kasay has connected on 81.9 percent of his 529 field goal attempts.

Kasay ranks seventh all-time in field goals made (433) and ranks eighth all-time with 1,823 points.

Saints kicker Garrett Hartley signed to a five-year, $6.277 million extension before the lockout, but suffered a right hip injury during Sunday night's 40-20 preseason win over the Oakland Raiders. Hartley is the only place-kicker on the roster, which led to the Saints attempting two-point conversions against the Raiders.

The severity of Hartley's injury is not yet known, so the addition of Kasay could just be for the preseason finale against the Tennessee Titans. Punter Thomas Morstead would be expected to handle kickoff duties if Kasay is signed.

Steelers Complete First Roster Cuts; Place Four On Waivers

The Pittsburgh Steelers completed the second portion of their roster cuts on Tuesday, placing four players on waivers.

In addition to veteran linebacker Chris Ellis, the Steelers waived three undrafted rookie free agents -- nose tackle Anthony Gray, cornerback Niles Brinkley and wide receiver Terrence McCrae. Combined, the undrafted rookies received $21,000 of the team's $75,000 signing bonus limit for undrafted free agents.

The Steelers conclude their preseason schedule on Thursday night at the Carolina Panthers and are expected to reduce their roster to 53 players the following day.

Lions Releasing FB Jerome Felton

The Detroit Lions have informed fullback Jerome Felton that he will be released today, Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network reports.

A 2008 fifth-round pick out of Furman, the 6-foot, 247-pound Felton has started 16 of his 42 games with the Lions, carrying the ball 39 times for 126 yards and adding 30 receptions for 240 yards.

According to the last three Football Outsiders Almanacs (order this year's here), the Lions have gradually shifted to more single-back formations under offensive coordinator Scott Linehan. In 2008, single-back was used on 43 percent of their plays, which ranked 30th in the NFL. Last season, the Lions had a single-back on 75 percent of their plays, which ranked 2nd.

With No. 3 tight end Will Heller possessing the versatility to play fullback, carrying one full-time likely seemed redundant to general manager Martin Mayhew and head coach Jim Schwartz.

Jets WR Logan Payne Dislocates Wrist

Originally signed by the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Minnesota in 2007, wide receiver Logan Payne (6-foot-2, 205 pounds) spent his rookie season on Seattle's practice squad before making their 53-man roster in 2008.

With the Seahawks losing several receivers to injuries at the start of the 2008 season, Payne started the first two games, catching three passes for 39 yards before tearing his right ACL in Week 2 and landing on injured reserve. The last two seasons have been split between practice squad stints with the Seahawks, Kansas City Chiefs, Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings and New York Jets.

Though Payne has zero receptions on the preseason, his special teams play (team-high four tackles on special teams) gave him the inside track on the No. 5 receiver spot on the 53-man roster, and likely the more important 46-man roster, over Patrick Turner.

An injury may once again derail Payne, as the 26-year-old suffered a dislocated left wrist during last night's preseason win over the New York Giants, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports.

Payne is scheduled to undergo an MRI today to determine the severity of the injury.

Dolphins Could Have Several Regular Season Blackouts

The Miami Dolphins are taking some (deserved) heat for their University of Florida promotion, but it's clear that events like that are intended to get butts in the seats to avoid the first television blackouts since 1998.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports the Dolphins' season-opener against the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football is expected to sell out, but four other home games -- against the Houston Texans, Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos (date of the UF promotion) and Oakland Raiders -- are in danger of being blacked out locally.

"The message here is we have work to do (with ticket sales)," Dolphins CEO Mike Dee said. “We’re not where we hoped we would be...If there were a couple thousand tickets left, we would figure out a way to get it done. But this is more significant.

"It’s unsustainable to continue to think we can buy tickets. We are going to have to sell tickets. We’ve had a great 10-plus-year run of no blackouts, and that’s reflective of the great support from fans. We’ve got to find ways to entice people to come back."

The Dolphins have just one winning season since 2006 (11-5, 2008) and are coming off back-to-back 7-9 seasons. With the Patriots and New York Jets the clear 1-2 in the AFC East, and the Dolphins having issues at quarterback, fans may be more interested in staying on the couch and tracking their fantasy teams than going out to Sun Life Stadium to support what appears to be a very solid defense, but what will ultimately be a six, maybe seven-win product.

Falcons Center Todd McClure Undergoes Knee Surgery

Atlanta Falcons center Todd McClure underwent surgery on his right knee on Monday, putting his availability for the 2011 season-opener against the Chicago Bears in jeopardy, D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

"We don’t know the exact time frame of him coming back," head coach Mike Smith said. "It was a very minor procedure...I haven’t had an opportunity to talk to Todd or the doctors yet but we will be able to update that next week."

"We will make a determination (if he can play in the season-opener) as we get closer to it next week. The first few days, as I understand it, will be very critical in terms of when he can come back."

McClure has started 144 consecutive games, the second-longest active streak among NFL centers behind Casey Wiegmann's 159-game streak. 2010 fourth-round pick Joe Hawley would likely start at center should McClure miss Week 1.

NFL News and Notes - August 30, 2011

New York Jets 17, New York Giants 3

Sanders was due $2.8 million in base salary in 2011, the final year of his current contract.

Vick's $16.7 million average per year ranks third among quarterback contracts, behind only Tom Brady (New England) and Peyton Manning (Indianapolis). To keep Vick off the free agent market, the Eagles used the franchise tag on the 31-year-old quarterback in February.

Vick's franchise tag was worth $16.057 million in guaranteed base salary this season.

After spending two years in prison, and one season as a back-up to Donovan McNabb, Vick started 12 games for the 2010 Eagles, completing 62.6 percent of his 372 pass attempts for 3,018 yards, 21 touchdowns and 6 interceptions, resulting in a career-high 100.2 passer rating and a fourth Pro Bowl appearance.

For his career, the four-time Pro Bowler has completed 55.3 percent of his passes for 14,609 yards with 93 touchdowns and 58 interceptions. Vick also has 3,859 yards and 32 touchdowns rushing. The Bengals lost starting cornerback Jonathan Joseph to free agency, but added former San Francisco 49ers cornerback Nate Clements to start opposite Leon Hall. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Jennings will likely work as the nickel corner while Adam "Pacman" Jones opens the season on the PUP list.

A seventh-round pick out of Memphis in 2009, the 6-foot-2, 289-pound McDonald had four tackles in eight games in 2010. McDonald had spent the first one-and-a-half seasons of his NFL career on the Bengals' practice squad.

In 16 games last season, Taylor had 112 carries for just 267 yards and three touchdowns with 20 receptions for 139 yards out of the backfield.

With Matt Forte the clear No. 1 in the Bears' backfield, and the free agent signing of Marion Barber, Taylor became expendable this offseason. Taylor had six carries for 10 yards in the first two preseason games, but was held out of Saturday night's game against the Tennessee Titans.

UPDATE: The Bears have apparently had a change of heart. Citing a miscommunication with the veteran running back, Taylor has not been released and was back at Halas Hall on Monday. Whether or not that has anything to do with Barber missing today's practice with a calf injury is unknown.

This morning, Kennard McGuire, Gurode's agent, and the Cowboys met to discuss the situation.
