Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis announced that he has a torn ACL in his right knee.
For Davis, this is the third time in the last two years he has torn that particular ligament.
Selected with the 14th overall pick of the 2005 NFL Draft out of Georgia, Davis had 339 tackles, 11 quarterback sacks and three interceptions in his first 69 games before tearing his ACL midway through 2009, the final year of his rookie contract.
Due to the rules governing the uncapped season, Davis was a restricted free agent in 2010, which he spent on injured reserve after re-tearing the ligament during a non-contact drill during offseason workouts. Prior to 2011 training camp, Davis signed a four-year, $33.2 million contract extension that included a $7 million signing bonus, with a $1 million base salary and $1 million roster bonus in 2011.
Losing Davis is another blow to a Panthers defense that lost middle linebacker Jon Beason to a torn Achilles tendon in Week 1.
