Hasselbeck Moves Closer to Starting

After missing Wednesday and Thursday's practices, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck took some snaps on Friday.

Hasselbeck was officially listed as "questionable" on the team's final injury report of the week.

Despite the improvement in Hasselbeck's status, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll remains committed to starting Charlie Whitehurst in Sunday night's "For All the Marbles" game against the St. Louis Rams.

"Charlie’s going," Carroll said according to Eric Williams of the Tacoma News Tribune. "We’ve been committed to that because that’s what we can count on and that’s what we know. Charlie had a real solid week. He did everything we needed him to do, so he’s ready for the game."

It's hard to fault Carroll for remaining verbally committed to Whitehurst. Hasselbeck hasn't practiced this week due to a quirky injury that resurfaced when Hasselbeck ran untouched into the end zone during last week's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

But if Hasselbeck is healthy enough to play, he deserves to start, and not just because he's been with the team since the 2001 season and is a free agent after the season, though that's certainly part of the equation.

Hasselbeck is better-equipped than Whitehurst to handle a playoff situation. He's been in this situation before, he's taken the lion's share of the first-team reps throughout the season, and his experience can get the Seahawks offense out of bad situations against Steve Spagnuolo's defense.

And yes, the last time Hasselbeck plays in front of the home crowd at Qwest Field should not be during an embarrassing loss to the Atlanta Falcons, with a vocal minority of fans chanted "Charlie! Charlie!" during the fourth quarter.

Chargers Place Tolbert, Cooper on IR

The San Diego Chargers announced that running back Mike Tolbert and linebacker Stephen Cooper have been placed on injured reserve.

Running back Curtis Brinkley and linebacker Darry Beckwith have been signed off the team's practice squad.

Cooper averaged over 100 tackles between 2007-09, but injuries have limited the 6-1, 235-pound inside linebacker to 12 games, in which Cooper has 43 tackles, 1 quarterback sack, and 1 interception.

Cooper missed last Sunday's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, and hadn't practiced during this week's preparations for the regular season finale against the Denver Broncos.

Tolbert suffered a neck/shoulder injury against the Bengals.

The former undrafted free agent from Coastal Carolina established career-highs this season with 735 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground, and 25 receptions for 216 yards as a receiver out of the backfield.

Cooper will be an unrestricted free agent in the off-season, while Tolbert is scheduled to be a restricted free agent.

Panthers HC John Fox Officially Won't Be Back in 2011

The Carolina Panthers confirmed what many have speculated in recent weeks: head coach John Fox will be coaching his final game for the franchise on Sunday.

"I told John today that I appreciate everything he has done for us over the last nine years, but as happens in this business, it is time for both sides to move in different directions," Carolina Panthers Owner/Founder Jerry Richardson said in a statement released by the team.

"While we haven't accomplished all of the goals we set as an organization when we signed him in 2002, we have certainly had our share of high moments - the Super Bowl, two NFC Championship games and a division title in 2008. We wish John and his family the best going forward."

In nine seasons with the Panthers, Fox's teams have compiled a 73-70 regular season record, won three NFC South titles, and went 5-3 in the post-season, including a narrow, three-point loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII.

"I appreciate the opportunity Mr. Richardson gave me to be a head coach in the National Football League nine years ago and to be a part of this organization," Fox said.

"I have formed many close relationships and I have many great memories. I particularly want to thank the players for their efforts throughout the years. Working with so many great people has been a rewarding experience."

Dolphins Place LB Karlos Dansby on IR

Miami Dolphins inside linebacker Karlos Dansby has been placed on injured reserve, Jeff Darlington of the Miami Herald reports.

Signed to a five-year, $43 million contract in the off-season, Dansby started 13 of 14 games for Miami this season, and has 95 tackles, 3 quarterback sacks, and 4 passes defensed.

Dansby has battled wrist and toe injuries this season, and has been spelled often in base defense packages by veteran linebacker Tim Dobbins.

Wide receiver Julius Pruitt has been signed off the practice squad to fill Dansby's spot on the 53-man roster, Darlington adds.

Eagles Sign S Jamar Adams Off Practice Squad

The Philadelphia Eagles have promoted safety Jamar Adams from their practice squad.

Adams replaced rookie safety Jamar Wall, who has been placed on waivers.

Originally signed by the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent from the University of Michigan in 2008, Adams re-joined the Eagles' practice squad last week.

Adams had a two-week stint on the Eagles' practice squad earlier this season.

The 6-2, 212-pound Adams spent much of his first two seasons on Seattle's practice squad, appearing in 7 games and totaling 4 tackles, all on special teams in 2009.

Saints RB Pierre Thomas Tweaks Ankle

New Orleans Saints running back Pierre Thomas landed on the team's injury report after tweaking his ankle during Friday's practice, Mike Triplett of The Times-Picayune reports.

Thomas is listed as "Questionable".

The Saints' leading rusher in 2009, Thomas missed nine games this season with a severe and mysterious ankle injury. Thomas returned to action in Week 13, and has 122 yards on 37 carries with one touchdown and 12 receptions for 68 yards over the last three weeks.

New Orleans leaned on Thomas in the second half of Monday night's win over the Atlanta Falcons, which kept their hopes for a first-round bye alive and had Thomas getting back into a rhythm.

"I definitely wanted to show everybody what I could bring to the table, because, you know, it's been a while," Thomas said on Thursday. "So I'm just trying to get back into my rhythm, the couple of games before I was just getting into rhythm. I felt like, I'll say that I wasn't really 'in' rhythm that much. I was just getting back used to the game because I'd been out for a while."

Charlie Weis Is Being Pursued by Florida

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Charlie Weis is reportedly being pursued for the same position at the University of Florida.

Pat Dooley of the Gainesville Sun first mentioned this possibility during his weekly radio show on Thursday, and ESPN's Chris Mortensen has confirmed that new Florida head coach Will Muschamp has contacted the Chiefs for permission to talk to Weis.

A longtime NFL coordinator, Weis made his first foray into the college coaching world when he accepted the head coaching position at the University of Notre Dame in 2005. Weis compiled a 34-25 record for the Irish, but was fired last November.

Weis joined Todd Haley's coaching staff earlier this year, and the Chiefs have improved from 25th in total offense to 9th. Kansas City has the NFL's #1-ranked rushing offense, which has helped the team improve from 31st in time of possession in 2009 to 9th this season.

Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew Ruled Out

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced that Pro Bowl running back Maurice Jones-Drew has been ruled out for Sunday's against the Houston Texans.

Jones-Drew has a knee injury that kept him out of last week's loss to the Washington Redskins, and will likely require surgery in the off-season.

The 5-8, 205-pound running back has 1,324 yards and 5 touchdowns on the ground, adding 34 receptions for 317 yards and 2 touchdowns as a receiver out of the backfield.

On Tuesday, Jones-Drew was named to his second straight Pro Bowl.

The Jaguars have also ruled tight end Zach Miller (concussion) and linebacker Justin Durant (groin) for Sunday, with starting safety Courtney Greene listed as questionable with a shoulder injury.

Buccaneers RB Cadillac Williams Plans to Test Free Agency

Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Cadillac Williams plans to test the free agent market in the off-season, reports Charlie Campbell of PewterReport.com.

"I mean I am a free agent so I’m going to explore my options," Williams said. "The Bucs been good to me. You know I love playing here. The fan base is awesome. We’ll see how things go."

A first-round pick (5th overall) out of Auburn in 2005, Williams has rushed for 3,670 yards and 20 touchdowns during his career, adding 134 receptions for 909 yards and 4 touchdowns as a receiver.

Williams, who turns 29 next April, suffered a career-threatening right knee injury four weeks into the 2007 season. Williams opened 2008 on the PUP list, and was having his finest game of that injury-shortened campaign when he tore the patellar tendon in his left knee in the regular season finale.

Over the last two seasons, Williams has not missed a game, and is playing this season under the one-year restricted free agent tender. Undrafted rookie LeGarrette Blount has supplanted Williams as the feature back, relegating Williams to third-down duty.

Despite his age and injury history, Williams' receiving skills (his 46 receptions rank 3rd on the Bucs this season) and ability to pick up the blitz should draw interest on the free agent market.

Cowboys Make Room for Kris Brown

To push David Buehler in 2011, the Dallas Cowboys signed veteran free agent kicker Kris Brown on Thursday night.

In order to add Brown to the 53-man roster, linebacker Leon Williams (hamstring) has been placed on injured reserve, Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News reports.

A fourth-round pick (110th overall) in 2006 out of the University of Miami by the Cleveland Browns, the 6-3, 250-pound Williams signed a one-year contract with the Cowboys in January.

Williams dressed for 11 games, totaling 8 tackles, six of which coming on special teams.

Packers Place OL Marshall Newhouse on IR; Sign Evan Dietrich-Smith

The Green Bay Packers announced that offensive lineman Marshall Newhouse has been placed on injured reserve.

A fifth-round pick out of TCU, Newhouse has been a gameday inactive for all 15 games this season. Newhouse landed on the Packers' injury report last Thursday with a back injury.

To replace Newhouse, the Packers re-signed offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith, a center/guard who entered the NFL with the Packers as an undrafted free agent out of Idaho State in 2009.

Dietrich-Smith appeared in 13 games for the Packers last season, but was waived at the end of this year's training camp. Dietrich-Smith spent the first four weeks of the season with the Seattle Seahawks, but did not appear in any games.

Studesville Will Interview For Broncos Job

Denver Broncos interim head coach Eric Studesville will interview for the permanent position at the end of the season, Mike Klis of The Denver Post reports.

Before concluding head coaching interviews, Klis adds the Broncos will finalize a deal that will put Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway in charge of the team's football operations.

Studeville, 43, replaced Josh McDaniels in early December, and has guided the Broncos to a 1-2 record heading into their regular season finale against the San Diego Chargers.

"Certainly in our business the won-loss record is the bottom line," Studesville said. "I feel like I've put every bit of myself into this opportunity. I don't regret a moment. I don't regret a decision."

Studesville entered the NFL in 1997 as a quality control coach with the Chicago Bears. After three seasons in Chicago, Studesville was a running backs coach with the New York Giants (2001-03) and Buffalo Bills (2004-09) before joining the Broncos in 2010.

Jaguars Place QB David Garrard on IR

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard has been placed on season-ending injured reserve, Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union reports.

Garrard underwent surgery on the middle finger of his right hand on Wednesday, and had already been ruled out for Sunday's must-win regular season finale against the Houston Texans.

Veteran Trent Edwards will start for the Jaguars.

The 32-year old Garrard completed 64.5% of his 366 pass attempts this season for 2,734 yards with 23 touchdowns and 15 interceptions this season. Garrard added 279 yards and 5 touchdowns, sharing the team lead with Pro Bowl running back Maurice Jones-Drew in that category.

Garrard has four years and $34.5 million remaining on his current contract.

Cowboys Sign Kicker Kris Brown

The Dallas Cowboys have signed veteran kicker Kris Brown, Nick Eatman of DallasCowboys.com reports.

Dallas has not officially announced the transaction, which will require a corresponding move to add Brown to the 53-man roster.

A native of Southlake, Texas who played his college ball at the University of Nebraska, Brown was a seventh-round pick (228th overall) in the 1999 NFL Draft of the Pittsburgh Steelers. After three seasons in Pittsburgh, Brown signed with the expansion Houston Texans, where he handled the kicking duties from 2002-09.

Brown lost a competition with Neil Rackers this summer, and the Texans' all-time leader in scoring was released in early September. Brown had a five-week, three-game stint with the San Diego Chargers in the middle of the season, connecting on 4-of-5 field goal attempts, with a long of 36 yards.

In 179 career games, Brown is 256-of-311 (77.3%) on field goal attempts.

Brown is expected to sign a multi-year deal, and will compete with second-year kicker David Buehler for the job in 2011. A strong-legged kicker from USC, Buehler was a kickoff specialist in 2009 before taking over the kicking duties this season.

Through 15 games, Buehler is 24-of-31 on field goal attempts and has 21 touchbacks. Buehler missed a fourth-quarter extra point in the Cowboys' 27-26 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Christmas night.

NFL Reduces Fines on Flagrant Hits

The NFL has reduced the amounts of several high-profile fines over flagrant hits, Judy Battista of New York Times reports.

Fines levied against Atlanta Falcons cornerback Dunta Robinson, New England Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather, and Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison made headlines this season. Robinson and Meriweather were fined $50,000 apiece, while Harrison was fined $75,000.

Upon their appeals, Battista reports that Robinson's fine was reduced to $25,000, Meriweather's to $40,000, and Harrison's fine was dropped to $50,000.

Battista adds that the New York Jets were fined $100,000 over the Sal Alosi tripping incident from Week 14, with the fine enhanced by Jets special teams coach Mike Westhoff's accusations against the New England Patriots.

Pro Bowls and The Rookie Wage Scale

On Wednesday, NFLLabor.com, a website established by the NFL to provide a league-friendly vantage point on labor issues, pointed out that the 84 players selected to compete in the 2011 Pro Bowl have an average of 6.8 years of experience, with 83% of the Pro Bowl players having at least four years experience in the NFL.

The league also adds that three of the 84 players were first-round picks in 2010.

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com suggests that these numbers tend to support the NFL's case for a rookie wage scale.

Florio accurately notes the league's subtle message has been that "the best players in the league are the proven, experienced players, and thus that they’re the ones who should be getting the money, not the first-year players who, despite the hype they generate, rarely become impact players in the first year of their careers."

This sentiment is overwhelmingly supported by fans, as well as an alarming number of current NFL players, making a "rookie wage scale" a slam dunk in the next collective bargaining agreement. To be more accurate, the league will get a friendlier (to them) rookie wage scale than the one that already exists, and which remained applicable even in an uncapped season.

Taking a look at the 76 positional players (the league included the eight special teams players in their figures) selected for the 2011 Pro Bowl, 45 entered the NFL as a first-round draft pick.

Ten of those 45 players, including three from 2010, made the Pro Bowl in their rookie season. Eight of those 10 players entered the NFL within the last four years.

Thirty of the 35 remaining Pro Bowlers who entered the NFL as a first-round pick, but did not make the Pro Bowl as a rookie, made their first Pro Bowl while playing on their rookie contract.

One 2011 Pro Bowler (Reggie Wayne) produced at a Pro Bowl level for years, but didn't go to Hawaii until after he signed a long-term extension in 2006. Two other 2011 Pro Bowlers who were chosen with a first-round pick--Nnamdi Asomugha and Jordan Gross--went to their first Pro Bowls while playing under the franchise tag. Former first-round defensive ends Justin Smith and Jason Babin made their first Pro Bowls with their second (Smith) and fifth (Babin) franchises.

If the NFL wants to make sure that first-year players "earn" the money, the current rookie pool system, which serves as a rookie salary cap, already does that by restricting what draft picks can make in their first season.

This year's first-round Pro Bowlers--Ndamukong Suh, Maurkice Pouncey, and Devin McCourty--combined to earn $7.04 million in total compensation (signing bonus, roster bonuses, base salary), with $3.1 million (44%) of that going to Suh, the second overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Most of the money in first-round contracts doesn't come until Year Two and beyond, with significant sums paid out in the form of option and roster bonuses, base salary escalations in the final year which are earned through incentives based on playing-time, individual and team performances, including, you guessed it, Pro Bowls.

In fact, according to a source with access to rookie contract data, Suh's Pro Bowl selection this week adds a cool $1 million to his expected $405,000 base salary in 2011. On a more modest and futuristic note, in 2014, Pouncey will receive a $62,500 raise, with McCourty's salary increasing by $50,000.

Chargers Place TE Antonio Gates on IR

The San Diego Chargers announced that seven-time Pro Bowl tight end Antonio Gates has been placed on injured reserve.

Gates has missed the last three weeks with a painful foot injury that was expected to sideline for the remainder of the regular season, and perhaps post-season, had the Chargers advanced.

San Diego was eliminated from playoff contention when they lost to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

Limited to 10 games this season, Gates caught 50 passes for 782 yards and 10 touchdowns, earning a starting assignment in the 2011 Pro Bowl.

Fullback Billy Latsko has been signed to replace Gates on the 53-man roster.

Jets QB Mark Sanchez Will Start vs. Bills

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan announced that quarterback Mark Sanchez will start on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.

Ryan added that how much Sanchez will play is unknown.

Sanchez has a slight cartilage tear in his right shoulder, and with a potential short-week of preparations before the Wild Card round of the playoffs, resting Sanchez on Sunday would have some benefit for the Jets.

"I always want to play," Sanchez said on Wednesday. "I just want to be smart with my shoulder (and make sure) that nothing slips in my week of practice in my preparation and film study. If it were up to me, I'd see how it feels on Sunday first before I did anything.

"I just want to be ready for the playoffs."

Jets Promote CB Isaiah Trufant Off Practice Squad

The New York Jets have signed cornerback Isaiah Trufant off their practice squad, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports.

Trufant, whose older brother Marcus plays for the Seattle Seahawks, joined the Jets' practice squad in early December after spending the previous two years with the Las Vegas Locos of the United Football League.

Trufant was named the UFL's Defensive Player of the Year for 2010 after posting 30 tackles, 1 quarterback sack, and 4 interceptions.

Prior to his stint in the UFL, the former Eastern Washington University standout played for the Spokane Shock, Kansas City Brigade, and Arizona Rattlers in arena football leagues.

Defensive lineman Matt Kroul has been signed to the practice squad after clearing waivers earlier this week.

Eagles to Start Kevin Kolb at QB

The Philadelphia Eagles will start Kevin Kolb at quarterback in Sunday's regular season finale.

Kolb took the first-team reps during this morning's walk-through, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Due to last Sunday's blizzard causing the postponement of their Week 16 game against the Minnesota Vikings, the Eagles have a short week to prepare for this week's game against the Dallas Cowboys, which will have no playoff implications.

In addition to clinching the NFC East, the Eagles are locked in as the #3-seed in the NFC Playoffs and will face either the Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, or Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card round.

Kolb opened the season as the starter, but was injured and replaced by Michael Vick, who has turned in an MVP-caliber season.

Overall, Kolb has four starts in 2010, and has completed 97-of-153 pass attempts for 1,035 yards with six touchdowns, 4 interceptions, and an 85.3 passer rating. The former second-round pick out of the University of Houston is signed through 2011, and could use Sunday's start as a springboard to an off-season trade out of Philadelphia, who will likely sign or use the franchise tag on Vick.

Vick has a bruised quad, and could use a week off to get back to 100% for the playoffs.

Eagles Sign DE Bobby McCray

The Philadelphia Eagles announced that they have signed defensive end Bobby McCray.

To make for McCray, veteran defensive end Derrick Burgess has been released.

Burgess, who played for the Eagles from 2001-04, was re-signed two weeks ago, and appeared in just one game in his second stint in Philadelphia.

McCray, a 2004 seventh-round pick (249th overall) out of Florida by the Jacksonville Jaguars, has 134 tackles and 29.5 quarterback sacks during his six-year career.

McCray has spent the previous two seasons with the New Orleans Saints, who released and re-signed McCray over the summer, only to waive him again prior to the start of the regular season.

Giants Place CB/KR Will Blackmon on IR

The New York Giants have placed cornerback/kick returner Will Blackmon on injured reserve, Mike Garafolo of The Star-Ledger reports.

Pat Hanlon of the Giants has confirmed Garafolo's always stellar reporting.

Blackmon signed with the Giants in October after being waived from Green Bay Packers' injured reserve list. In five games with the Giants, Blackmon returned 14 punts for 94 yards (6.7 per), 13 kicks for 238 yards (18.3 per), and recorded two tackles.

To replace Blackmon, the Giants have signed cornerback/return specialist Brian Witherspoon.

A former undrafted free agent from Stillman, Witherspoon (5-10, 180) averaged 23.6 yards on 80 kick returns, 10.8 yards on 26 punt returns, and posted 16 tackles in 22 games with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2008-09) and Detroit Lions (2009).

Eagles Sign DT Jeremy Clark

To fill the roster spot created when rookie defensive tackle Jeff Owens was placed on injured reserve, the Philadelphia Eagles announced the signing of defensive tackle Jeremy Clark.

Originally signed by the Eagles as an undrafted free agent out of Alabama in 2007, Clark (6-3, 309) has now been on a 53-man roster for all four of the NFC East teams.

Clark appeared in four games for the 2008 New York Giants, two games with the 2010 Dallas Cowboys, and was on the Washington Redskins roster, but inactive, for their Week 15 loss to the Cowboys.

Clark has also had practice squad stints with the Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals, where he spent last post- and off-seasons.

Lombardi Expects 49ers to Hire Baalke

Former NFL personnel executive and current NFL.com/NFL Network analyst Michael Lombardi spent two hours interviewing for the San Francisco 49ers general manager position last night.

Today, Lombardi reported on the NFL Network's "Around the League" program that current Vice President of Player Personnel Trent Baalke will be hired within the next 48 hours.

"The 49ers are going to hire Trent Baalke" said Lombardi adding that he's "not a candidate there."

Once hired, Baalke and 49ers CEO Jed York will collaborate on the hiring of the next head coach.

Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh is an early candidate for the position.

Falcons Sign S Rafael Bush Off Practice Squad

The Atlanta Falcons announced that safety Rafael Bush has been signed off the practice squad.

Bush replaces rookie safety Shann Schillinger, who was placed on injured reserve with a fractured ankle.

An undrafted free agent out of South Carolina State, the 5-11, 195-pound Bush had three tackles for the Falcons during the pre-season, and has been on Atlanta's practice squad since Week 1.

Wide receiver Brandyn Harvey has been signed to the Falcons' practice squad.

Today's roster move is the first involving Atlanta's 53-man roster since September 21.

49ers Interview Mike Lombardi For GM Position

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York held a two-hour interview with Michael Lombardi for the team's open general manager position late last night.

Lombardi, a former personnel executive with the Oakland Raiders, currently works as an analyst for NFL.com and The NFL Network.

Hiring a general manager is the top priority for 49ers' ownership, and interviews began on Tuesday with former St. Louis Rams personnel executive Tony Softli.

Current 49ers Vice President of Player Personnel Trent Baalke is believed to be the favorite for the position.

Texans Sign LB Isaiah Greenhouse Off Practice Squad

The Houston Texans have signed linebacker Isaiah Greenhouse off their practice squad, Nick Scufield of HoustonTexans.com reports.

Greenhouse replaces fourth-round linebacker Darryl Sharpton, who was placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

An undrafted rookie from Northwestern State, the 6-2, 232-pound Greenhouse has spent much of 2010 on the Texans' practice squad. The Texans activated Greenhouse for a Week 4 win over the Oakland Raiders, but Greenhouse did not play.

Eagles Place DT Jeff Owens on IR

Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jeff Owens was officially placed on injured reserve today, the team announced.

Owens ruptured his patellar tendon in his knee during last night's 24-14 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

A 2010 seventh-round pick out of Georgia, Owens spent the first 15 weeks of his rookie season on the practice squad before being activated for late last week and making his NFL debut against the Vikings.

The Eagles have not yet filled Owens' spot on the 53-man roster.

Bengals Receive Roster Exemption

Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports the Cincinnati Bengals have received a roster exemption for cornerback David Pender.

Pender was claimed off waivers on Tuesday, but has not reported to the team and is unsure if he wants to continue with his NFL career.

The 6-0, 180-pounder from Purdue signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in April. Credited with five tackles during the pre-season, Pender was waived and spent three weeks on the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad.

After six weeks on the street, Pender joined the Indianapolis Colts' practice squad in Week 14, was activated to the 53-man roster in Week 14, and totaled two tackles in three games before he was waived on Monday.

NFL Fines Favre $50,000

The NFL has concluded its two-month investigation into allegations that, while as a member of the New York Jets during the 2008 season, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre sent inappropriate cellphone pictures for Jenn Sterger, who was employed as a sideine reporter for the Jets.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello announced that Favre has been fined $50,000 for failing to cooperate in the investigation.

Here's the full statement from the league:

"The NFL office conducted an investigation to determine whether Brett Favre's interaction with New York Jets game-day employee Jenn Sterger in 2008 violated the NFL Personal Conduct Policy.

"In reviewing the matter, the sole focus was on whether there was a violation of league policies regarding conduct in the workplace. NFL policies do not extend to private conduct or make judgments about the appropriateness of personal relationships, except where that conduct or those relationships raise issues under the law or league policies.

"The investigation included an analysis of publicly available reports; a series of interviews with knowledgeable individuals, including Sterger and Favre; a review of communications between the two furnished to our office; and independent forensic analysis of electronically stored material. The investigation was limited in several respects because the conduct occurred in 2008 but was not brought to our attention until this fall. As a result, certain records and individuals were unavailable to the NFL.

"The investigation also reviewed a second media report about allegations involving other women who worked at the Jets' facility in 2008. Misconduct by Favre regarding that claim was unable to be substantiated because individuals with potentially relevant information declined to be interviewed or otherwise cooperate with the investigation. In addition, our investigation took longer than might ordinarily have been the case due to difficulties in arranging to speak with certain key individuals, the time required to retrieve and review stored electronic records, and Commissioner Roger Goodell's decision to meet personally with both Favre and Sterger before making a decision.

"On the basis of the evidence currently available to him, Commissioner Goodell could not conclude that Favre violated league policies relating to workplace conduct. The forensic analysis could not establish that Favre sent the objectionable photographs to Sterger. The review found no evidence to contradict the statements of both Favre and Sterger that they never met in person, nor was there anything to suggest that Sterger engaged in any inappropriate conduct.

"However, Commissioner Goodell also determined that Favre was not candid in several respects during the investigation, resulting in a longer review and additional negative public attention for Favre, Sterger, and the NFL. The commissioner notified Favre that he has been fined $50,000 for his failure to cooperate with the investigation in a forthcoming manner. Commissioner Goodell stated to Favre that if he had found a violation of the league's workplace conduct policies, he would have imposed a substantially higher level of discipline.

"In a memo to clubs today, Commissioner Goodell reminded them of the serious nature of this matter and stated that NFL policies make no excuses for improper or potentially unlawful conduct in the workplace. 'Every member of every club's staff should be able to work in an environment free of harassment or hostility, and one in which every employee is valued, respected, and given a full opportunity to contribute to the goals of the club and the NFL,' Commissioner Goodell said. 'Our new training program on workplace conduct will help all of us to promote the right kind of environment for all employees and I intend to dedicate the fine I have imposed on Favre to help fund that training program.'"

Redskins Place S Kareem Moore on IR

Washington Redskins safety Kareem Moore has been placed on injured reserve, Mike Jones of TBD.com reports.

A sixth-round pick (180th overall) out of Nicholls State in 2008, Moore became a full-time starter this season. In 12 games this season, Moore totaled 64 tackles, 1 interception, and five passes defensed.

To replace Moore on the 53-man roster, Jones reports the Redskins have signed cornerback Reggie Jones off the New Orleans Saints practice squad.

Ravens to Sign LS Kevin Houser

According to a league source, the Baltimore Ravens will sign long-snapper Kevin Houser.

Baltimore lost rookie long-snapper Morgan Cox to a torn ACL last Sunday, and tried out several snappers on Tuesday before narrowing their list to Houser and Bryan Pittman, who snapped for the Houston Texans between 2003-08 before splitting last season with the Texans and Atlanta Falcons.

Houser, 33, spent last season with the Seattle Seahawks, landing on injured reserve after suffering a collapsed lung against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Prior to joining the Seahawks, Houser spent nine seasons with the New Orleans Saints.
