Danny O'Neil of the Seattle Times reports that the Seattle Seahawks have signed veteran defensive end James Wyche.
Wyche takes the roster spot created with the trade of cornerback Josh Wilson to the Baltimore Ravens.
The 6-5, 275-pound Wyche was a seventh-round pick (213th overall) out of Syracuse by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2006. Wyche spent most of his rookie season on the practice squad, and spent 2007 and 2008 on injured reserve with groin and knee injuries.
Wyche made one tackle in two games for the Jaguars before being waived. Wyche was claimed by the St. Louis Rams, where he appeared in one game but posted no statistics.
The Rams released Wyche in June, and he was signed by the Houston Texans on August 16. Wyche did not appear in the Texans' pre-season game against the New Orleans Saints, and was cut on August 24.

Browns LBs Bowens, Barton on Roster Bubble
Veteran linebackers David Bowens and Eric Barton, two 12-year veterans who followed head coach Eric Mangini to the Cleveland Browns last March, are both on the roster bubble, reports Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.
"I'm uncertain," Bowens said of his spot on the roster. "Sometimes you get a sense of what's going on by what you're doing. I mean, in eight years I don't think I've played in the fourth quarter (of a pre-season game)."
Bowens started 15 of 16 games for the Browns last season, registering 71 tackles, 5.5 quarterback sacks, and an interception while playing with a left knee injury that has swelled up this summer, causing him out of the Browns' first two pre-season games.
"Last year was last year," said Bowens. "Eric (Mangini) knows me and my ability, but the new regime doesn't. That's why I'm uncertain."
Barton, who turns 33 next month, started eight games and made 58 tackles last season before landing on injured reserve with a neck injury. Barton is penciled in as the starter at left inside linebacker, but his age, recent injury history, and $2.3 million salary may prompt the Browns to go younger at the position.

Glazer: Cardinals Shopping Leinart
Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com reports the Arizona Cardinals are actively shopping quarterback Matt Leinart.
Glazer adds that the compensation they're asking in return is unclear.
Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt announced today that the starting lineup will remain the same from the third pre-season game, which was started by Derek Anderson. Whisenhunt also discussed his one-on-one meeting with Leinart, who has openly expressed his dissatisfaction with his demotion.
"I understand where Matt was coming from, he was disappointed," Whisenhunt said, according to Kent Somers of The Arizona Republic. "I expect those types of situations to happen. Would I have rather he come to me and talk to me? Yes, to be perfectly honest with you, I would.
"Matt and I had an opportunity to talk yesterday, and he definitely had some feelings that he needed to get out and he came up (to the office) and saw me."
The 10th overall pick of the 2006 NFL Draft out of USC, Leinart has started 17 games over the last four seasons, completing 57.1% of his 595 pass attempts for 3,893 yards, with 14 touchdowns and 20 interceptions, compiling a 70.8 passer rating. Most of Leinart's game action occurred during the 2006 and 2007 seasons before giving way to Kurt Warner.
After Warner's retirement, Leinart opened this off-season as the Cardinals' presumed starter at quarterback.
In March, Whisenhunt expressed interest in acquiring restricted free agent quarterback Charlie Whitehurst from the San Diego Chargers, and brought in Anderson after he was released by the Cleveland Browns. Whitehurst was traded to the Seattle Seahawks, so the Cardinals signed Anderson to a two-year contract worth $7.25 million, but could be worth as much as $18 million through playing-time and performance escalators.
This pre-season, Leinart has completed 82.6% of his 23 pass attempts and has a 110.3 passer rating, but the offense hasn't moved the ball consistently or put points on the scoreboard with him under center. While Anderson has struggled, he has a much stronger arm and willingness to use it, and could become a more effective answer the more familiar he gets with Whisenhunt's system.

Raiders Release TE Eric Butler
The Oakland Raiders have released tight end Eric Butler to get their roster down to the 75-man limit.
Butler (6-2, 255) signed with the Raiders on August 19, but did not appear in either of the two pre-season games Oakland has played since.
An undrafted free agent out of Mississippi State, Butler has had stints with the New York Giants, Indianapolis Colts, and St. Louis Rams, but has yet to appear in an NFL game.
Butler caught one pass for 4 yards during the 2009 pre-season with the Rams, who waived him on August 12.

Patriots Place CB Leigh Bodden on IR
The New England Patriots were the last team to announce their cuts down to the 75-man limit on Tuesday, and apparently it was due to a bomb that was dropped when veteran cornerback Leigh Bodden was placed on injured reserve with what's believed to be a torn rotator cuff.
Bodden, 28, started 14 of 15 games for the Patriots last season, leading the team with five interceptions and 19 pass break-ups. A free agent this off-season, Bodden re-signed with the Patriots, inking a four-year, $28.5 million contract that included $10 million in guarantees.
Bodden was projected to start opposite Darius Butler, which means first-round cornerback Devin McCourty will need to step up his game during his rookie season.
In addition to Bodden, the Patriots placed safeties Josh Barrett and Bret Lockett, and defensive lineman Darryl Richard on injured reserve. Defensive back Terrence Johnson, re-signed earlier this week, was waived.

Chargers Claim CB Fred Bennett Off Waivers
The San Diego Chargers announced that they have claimed veteran cornerback Fred Bennett off waivers from the Houston Texans.
Veteran defensive lineman Ryon Bingham has been released.
Bennett (6-1, 194) was a fourth-round pick (123rd overall) out of South Carolina in 2007. In 40 career games, including 17 starts, Bennett has totaled 123 tackles and 5 interceptions, with 23 total passes defensed and four forced fumbles.
Bennett had a team-high three interceptions as a rookie, but his level of play tailed off the last two seasons. As a result, Bennett was behind 2010 first-round pick Kareem Jackson, 2009 picks Glover Quin and Brice McCain, and 2008 third-round pick Antwaun Molden on the depth chart, and his $1.101 million salary was made him expendable.
Bingham (6-3, 303) was a seventh-round pick out of Nebraska by the Chargers in 2004. After appearing in just one game his first two years in the league, Bingham totaled 79 tackles and 4.5 quarterback sacks in 48 games between 2006-08. Bingham spent the 2009 season on injured reserve, and was set to make $1.75 million in 2010.
The Chargers have also signed punter Glenn Pakulak.

Seahawks Trade CB Josh Wilson to the Ravens
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Seattle Seahawks have traded veteran cornerback Josh Wilson to the Baltimore Ravens for a conditional fifth-round draft pick.
Depending on how many games Wilson starts for Baltimore, the pick could increase to a fourth-round selection.
Wilson (5-9, 192) has started 24 games for the Seahawks since being chosen in the second-round of the 2007 NFL Draft out of the University of Maryland. In 40 career games, Wilson has totaled 130 tackles, with a pair of quarterback sacks and 6 interceptions, returning 3 for touchdowns.
Wilson has also averaged 25 yards on 94 kick returns with one touchdown.
The Ravens have been in the market for a starting-caliber cornerback after losing Dominique Foxworth for the season to a torn ACL.

Cardinals Place FB Nehemiah Broughton on IR
Arizona Cardinals fullback Nehemiah Broughton has been placed on season-ending injured reserve, reports Kent Somers of The Arizona Republic.
Broughton suffered a torn ACL in last Saturday's pre-season game against the Chicago Bears.
To reach the 75-man roster limit, the Cardinals have "Waived/Injured" wide receiver Darren Mougey and placed fourth-round linebacker O'Brien Schofield on the "Reserve/Non-Football Injury" list.
Schofield tore an ACL during practices leading up to the Senior Bowl in January, and the Cardinals view the former University of Wisconsin standout as a long-term pass-rushing specialist.

Packers Place Harris, Bigby, and Starks on PUP
The Green Bay Packers have placed cornerback Al Harris (knee), safety Atari Bigby (ankle), and sixth-round running back James Starks (shoulder) on the "Reserve/PUP" list.
By placing them on the PUP list, each player will miss at least the first six weeks of the 2010 regular season. Cornerback Tramon Williams is expected to start opposite Charles Woodson, while 2010 third-round pick Morgan Burnett starts at strong safety.
Undrafted rookie running back Quinn Porter (knee) was placed on season-ending injured reserve. Porter sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee.

Browns Cut Roster to 75
To reach the NFL's 75-man roster limit, the Cleveland Browns waived defensive backs John Bowie and Gerard Lawson, wide receiver Taurus Johnson, and offensive lineman John Malecki, reports Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.
Defensive lineman Titus Adams was placed on injured reserve.
Bowie was waived on Monday night, and none of the releases announced today are much of a surprise. Lawson had one tackle on special teams tackle in one pre-season game, Johnson (6-1, 205) caught one pass for 16 yards in one game, and Malecki saw action as a reserve in two games this month.
Johnson, who caught 112 passes for 1,434 yards and 12 touchdown during his career at South Florida, signed with the Browns earlier this month after being waived by the Miami Dolphins.

Eagles Place DE Ricky Sapp on IR; Add Pannel Egboh
The Philadelphia Eagles have placed fifth-round defensive end Ricky Sapp on injured reserve, and claimed defensive end Pannel Egboh off waivers from the Houston Texans.
Sapp, who some had pegged as a first-round talent, has posted a pair of tackles this pre-season, but has been slowed by a knee injury and underwent an MRI exam.
Egboh (6-6, 287) played his college ball at Stanford and spent last summer with the San Francisco 49ers, totaling six tackles in pre-season action. Egboh spent part of last season on the Texans' practice squad, and appeared in two pre-season games before he was waived on Monday.

Jets Claim LB Ricky Foley Off Waivers
Former CFL linebacker/defensive prospect Ricky Foley is going from "On the Fringe" to "Hard Knocks".
According to Foley's agent, Paul Sheehy, the New York Jets have claimed Foley off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks.
Foley (6-2, 245) posted 12 quarterback sacks for the B.C. Lions of the Canadian Football League last season, and signed a three-year deal with the Seahawks in February. Foley has been vying for a spot as a back-up option at linebacker and the "Leo" defensive end position, and registered a pair of tackles in the Seahawks' three pre-season games.
The Jets and New England Patriots were other teams that were interested in Foley before he signed with the Seahawks.

Chargers Place LB Donald Butler on IR
The San Diego Chargers officially placed third-round linebacker Donald Butler on injured reserve, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Additionally, running back Marcus Mason, wide receiver Gary Banks, linebacker Darry Beckwith, and guard Lee Grimes were waived, getting the Chargers to the 75-man roster limit.
San Diego traded up to select Butler, a 6-1, 245-pound inside linebacker from the University of Washington, with the 79th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. Butler was expected to contribute on special teams as a rookie, and was thought to see some additional time as a pass-rushing linebacker, but suffered a torn Achilles' tendon on August 3.

Redskins Release Four, Place Malcolm Kelly on IR
To get down to the league-mandated 75-man roster by today's 4pm ET deadline, the Washington Redskins placed 2008 second-round wide receiver Malcolm Kelly (hamstring) on injured reserve.
The Redskins also cut veteran long-snapper James Dearth, and waived center Edwin Williams, safety Lendy Holmes, and rookie defensive end Hall Davis.
Davis, a fifth-round pick of the St. Louis Rams, was acquired from the Redskins for a conditional draft choice in 2011 on Monday. One day later, he's on the waiver-wire.

NFL Fines Browns NT Shaun Rogers One Game Check
The National Football League has fined Cleveland Browns nose tackle Shaun Rogers one game check for violating the NFL Personal Conduct Policy.
Rogers was arrested in April after attempting to carry a loaded weapon onto a plane at Cleveland Hopkins International airport. Rogers was unaware that gun was in his bag, and last month was placed in a 12-month diversion program.
One game check for Rogers is worth $405,882, so naturally Rogers is appealing the decision.

Saints Waive 7th Round QB Sean Canfield
New Orleans Saints seventh-round quarterback Sean Canfield has been waived, WWL-TV Sports reports.
Canfield has not attempted a pass during the pre-season, taking three kneel-downs at the end of the Saints' second pre-season game. The former Oregon State passer was the 239th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, and signed a four-year, $1.835 million contract that included a $45,900 signing bonus.
If Canfield clears waivers, the Saints may seek to add him to the practice squad on Sunday.
Undrafted rookie wide receiver Andy Tanner has also been waived, getting the Saints to the 75-man roster limit.

Buccaneers CB Aqib Talib Suspended One Game
Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib has been suspended for one game by the National Football League for violating the league's personal conduct policy, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
Talib was arrested on August 19 after assaulting a Tampa cab driver who was transporting Talib from a St. Petersburg club to his Tampa hotel room. Talib settled out of court with the cab driver, who says he has no animosity towards Talib and hopes he doesn't face criminal charges. Talib was placed in a pre-trial intervention program, which if completed, will likely result in the charges being dropped.
Schefter adds that the Buccaneers appealed the suspension, which was denied.
"Since last fall, Aqib has done all that's been asked of him and more, on and especially off the field," Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik said in a statement released by the team. "We look forward to his return to the field in Week 2."
In addition to the one-game suspension Talib will be docked an additional game check, meaning his suspension will cost him $166,765 in base salary this season.

Falcons Complete Roster Cutdown
The Atlanta Falcons have terminated the contract of veteran safety Matt Giordano and "Waived/Injured" defensive tackle Thomas Johnson.
Giordano (5-11, 200) signed with the Falcons in March after spending 2009 with the Green Bay Packers. In his five-year career, the first four which spent with the Indianapolis Colts, Giordano has totaled 82 tackles (27 on special teams) and 3 interceptions.
The 6-2, 304-pound Johnson started his career in 2005 with the Dallas Cowboys, and spent 2006 with the Houston Texans. Out of football in 2007 and 2008, Johnson started 10 of 13 games for the Falcons last season, totaling 20 tackles and a pair of quarterback sacks. Johnson appeared in the Falcons' pre-season opener, but has not played in the last two games due to an Achilles' injury.

Panthers Place Thomas Davis on "Reserve/PUP"
As part of cutting their roster to 75 players, the Carolina Panthers placed linebacker Thomas Davis on "Reserve/PUP", reports Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer.
Davis tore the ACL in his right knee during a non-contract drill during an "Organized Team Activity" session in June. Davis had torn the same knee ligament last November.
A former first-round pick (14th overall) out of Georgia, Davis has 388 tackles, 11 quarterback sacks, and 3 interceptions over his five NFL seasons. Davis was not eligible for unrestricted free agency this off-season, and signed his one-year, $3.268 million restricted free agent tender in June.
In addition to Davis, the Panthers placed wide receiver Wallace Wright and defensive end Hilee Taylor on injured reserve, and waived wide receivers Dexter Jackson and Oliver Young.

Buccaneers Release RB Derrick Ward
Rick Stroud of the St. Petersburg Times reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have released running back Derrick Ward.
Ward rushed for just 409 yards, with 20 receptions for 150 yards as a receiver in 2009, the first season of a four-year, $17 million contract he signed with the Buccaneers last off-season. Ward ran for 1,025 yards in 2008, adding 41 receptions for 384 yards during his final season with the New York Giants.
Ward struggled during the pre-season, gaining just 50 yards on 21 carries.
Buccaneers wide receiver Terrence Nunn and linebacker Jon Alston have been waived to get the Bucs to the 75-man roster limit.

Vikings Waive WR Marko Mitchell
The Minnesota Vikings have waived wide receiver Marko Mitchell, Tom Pelissero of ESPN Twin Cities reports.
Mitchell (6-4, 218) was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the seventh-round (243rd) of the 2009 NFL Draft out of Nevada.
Mitchell led the Redskins in receiving during the 2009 pre-season with 11 passes for 113 yards and 3 touchdowns, which earned him a spot on the team's 53-man roster. In 10 games last season, Mitchell caught 4 passes for 32 yards and recorded one tackle on special teams.
The Redskins waived Mitchell in May, and after making the required stop-over with the Detroit Lions, ended up in Minnesota in June. Mitchell caught one pass for the Vikings during the pre-season, a 71-yard touchdown from third-string quarterback Sage Rosenfels against the St. Louis Rams.

Seahawks Acquire OT Tyler Polumbus from Lions
The Seattle Seahawks have acquired offensive tackle Tyler Polumbus from the Detroit Lions, reports Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.
Trade compensation is not yet known.
Detroit had claimed Polumbus off waivers from the Denver Broncos last week. The Seahawks and Houston Texans had also made claims the 6-8, 330-pound Polumbus.
Signed by the Broncos as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Colorado in 2008, Polumbus was active in 31 of 32 games over the last two seasons. Polumbus started 8 games at right tackle for the Broncos in 2009, but was not a fit for Denver's new power-blocking system, and is more suited to play in a zone-blocking system, which both Houston and Seattle run.
With 2010 first-round pick Russell Okung slowed by an ankle injury, and back-up tackle Ray Willis out indefinitely following knee surgery, the Seahawks have been the market for offensive tackle depth.
Polumbus is signed through the 2010 season, and is slated to earn a $475,000 base salary.
It was reported earlier that the Lions had waived Polumbus.
Giants Place Sorgi, Moss, and Tracy on IR
To cut their roster down to the 75-man limit, the New York Giants have placed quartebrack Jim Sorgi (shoulder), wide receiver Sinorice Moss (groin), and sixth-round linebacker Adrian Tracy (elbow) on season-ending injured reserve.
Offensive lineman Kevin Boothe was placed on "Reserve/PUP", while undrafted rookie wide receiver Nyan Boateng was waived.
Boothe, a restricted free agent this off-season, suffered a torn pectoral muscle during the team's off-season workout program. Boothe was expected to miss 4-5 months, which put his expected return for late September. Boothe will now be eligible to come off PUP on October 19.

Jets Waive QB Kevin O'Connell
The New York Jets have placed quarterback Kevin O'Connell on waivers, Jenny Vrentas of The Star-Ledger reports.
A 2008 third-round pick (94th overall) out of San Diego State by the New England Patriots, O'Connell (6-5, 225) was the fourth quarterback on the Jets, who have apparently decided to keep Kellen Clemens as the third quarterback behind starter Mark Sanchez and back-up Mark Brunell.
O'Connell was acquired from the Detroit Lions, who had claimed him off waivers from New England last September. In two NFL games, both with the Patriots during his rookie season, O'Connell has completed 4-of-6 pass attempts for 23 yards.
O'Connell was 8-of-16 for 70 yards with a pair of interceptions this pre-season.

Jaguars Cut Roster Down to 75
The Jacksonville Jaguars announced several roster moves on Tuesday, including the placement of 2010 third-round defensive tackle D'Anthony Smith on injured reserve.
Undrafted rookie center John Estes joined Smith on IR, while cornerback Josh Gordy, center Cecil Newton, wide receiver Roren Thomas, and defensive end Julius Williams were waived.
Rookie center Bradley Vierling has been signed. An undrafted free agent from Vanderbilt, Vierling spent the OTAs with the Pittsburgh Steelers before being released in June.

Seahawks LB Leroy Hill Restructures Contract
Seattle Seahawks linebacker Leroy Hill has re-structured his contract, ESPN's Mike Sando reports.
As part of the six-year, $36 million contract Hill signed was scheduled to earn a guaranteed base salary of $6 million in 2010. Sando reports that Hill is now scheduled to earn $2.125 million, and the $26.875 million remaining between 2011 and 2014 has been cleared, making Hill a free agent after the 2010 season.
A third-round pick out of Clemson in 2005, the 6-1, 238-pound Hill made an immediate impact for the as a rookie, totaling 72 tackles and 7.5 quarterback sacks in 15 games (9 starts) and leading the NFC Champion Seahawks with 23 tackles during the post-season.
Injuries have cost Hill twelve games in the four seasons after his rookie campaign, and Hill’s sack production (7) has failed to match his rookie output.
During his 67-game career, Hill has 375 tackles (31 for a loss), 14.5 quarterback sacks, 11 passes defensed, 6 fumbles forced and 2 fumble recoveries.
Despite the lucrative contract, 2009 was a low point for Hill.
Discovered asleep at the wheel by police at an intersection in suburban Atlanta in February, Hill was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana after police discovered a small amount of the drug inside a backpack in the front seat of his car. Former Seahawks general manager Tim Ruskell and head coach Jim Mora still decided to place the $8.304 million franchise tag on Hill, which was rescinded after the Seahawks used the fourth overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft on Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry.
Hill would sign his six-year contract a few days later.
A groin injury in the first quarter of the regular season-opener limited Hill to 11 games during the 2009 season, during which Hill posted career-lows in tackles (46) and had just one quarterback sack.
Hill’s off-field issues continued this off-season.
Ten days after pleading guilty to the drug possession charges in April, Hill was arrested by Issaquah (Wash.) police after an altercation with his live-in girlfriend. Hill was charged with misdemeanor assault/domestic violence. The Seahawks instructed Hill to stay away from the facility for the majority of the team’s “Organized Team Activity” sessions, with Hill not re-surfacing until the final sessions.
Hill resolved the legal matter earlier this month, agreeing to court-ordered stipulations such as completing a domestic violence treatment program, counseling, community service, and staying out of trouble, which if completed within 18 months, will result in the dismissal of the charges.
Hill had time to resolve that issue after spraining his knee on August 10, which has kept him out of the Seahawks’ pre-season games. The National Football League has suspended Hill for the team’s season-opener against the San Francisco 49ers on September 12, and will dock him an additional game check for his drug charge in Georgia. Prior to his restructure, that punishment was going to cost Hill $705,882 in salary, but with his lower base salary, he’ll lose $250,000, 2/17ths of his $2.125 million salary.
The NFL has yet to make a ruling regarding additional punishment for Hill’s domestic violence charge in Washington state.

Lions Waive OT Tyler Polumbus
Less than a week after claiming him off waivers from the Denver Broncos, the Detroit Lions have waived offensive tackle Tyler Polumbus, reports Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.
Signed by the Broncos as an undrafted free agent from the University of Colorado in 2008, Polumbus (6-8, 330) was active in 31 of 32 games over the last two seasons. Polumbus started 8 games at right tackle for the Broncos in 2009, but was not a fit for Denver's new power-blocking system.
Despite his size, Polumbus is athletic and more suited to play in a zone-blocking scheme that Denver used to run. The Houston Texans and Seattle Seahawks, zone-blocking teams, placed waiver claims on Polumbus, but he was awarded to the Lions.

Ayanbadejo (quadriceps) and Lawrence (knee) opened camp on the "Active/PUP" list, and by moving to the reserved version will miss the first six weeks of the 2010 regular season.
Today's moves brings the Ravens' roster to the 75-man limit.

Browns Waive CB John Bowie
According to a league source, the Cleveland Browns have waived cornerback John Bowie.
Famously drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the fourth-round of the 2007 NFL Draft in a pick acquired from the New England Patriots in exchange for Randy Moss, Bowie (5-11, 190) appeared in five games for Oakland over the last three seasons, totaling a pair of special teams tackles before being waived with an injury settlement during the 2009 season.
Bowie, who played his college ball at the University of Cincinnati, signed with the Browns in February and participated in their off-season program. Released so the Browns could sign their 2010 draft class, Bowie was re-signed on August 7 and made one tackle in three pre-season games.
By waiving Bowie, the Browns' roster now stands at 79 and must be reduced to 75 by today's 4pm ET deadline.

Saints Asst. DL Coach Suspended 30 Days Without Pay
New Orleans Saints assistant defensive line coach Travis Jones has been suspended 30 days without pay for his role in a real estate scam in Texas, the Associated Press reports.
"Coach Jones has accepted responsibility for his actions and has cooperated with the investigation of this matter and will also be participating in a program to educate others in the league about his experience," Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said in a written statement released on Monday. "The actions of Travis Jones violate the NFL's personal conduct policy and the policies and standards of conduct for employees of the New Orleans Saints."
Jones admitted to his role in the scam, for which he received $86,000. Jones has been with the Saints since the 2008 season, joining the organization after spending three seasons coaching the Miami Dolphins' defensive ends and outside linebackers. Jones has also coached at LSU, Kansas, Appalachian State, and the University of Georgia, his alma mater.

Broncos May Be Forced to Cut 2009 Second-Round Pick
One of the ramifications of the Denver Broncos holding a roster spot for injured Pro Bowl outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil is that unless they plan one man down at the linebacker spot, which is difficult for 3-4 teams to do, they'll need to keep one less player at another position group.
Another is that they may not be able to keep an additional player at another position group.
Dave Kreiger of the Denver Post writes that with eight of the anticipated nine defensive back positions accounted for, head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Brian Xanders may need to make a decision between 2010 seventh-round pick Syd'Quan Thompson and 2009 second-round pick Alphonso Smith.
Thompson has 2 tackles and an interception, which he returned 48 yards for a touchdown. Thompson also leads the NFL this pre-season with a 25.8-yard punt return average, and has made two special teams tackles.
During the 2009 NFL Draft, Denver sent a 2010 first-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks--which was used to select Texas safety Earl Thomas--to move to the 37th pick to select Smith, who totaled 14 tackles and three passes defensed in 15 games as a reserve last season.
This summer, Smith has 9 tackles, including one for a loss, and a pair of passes defensed, but Kreiger suggests Smith may not have a role in the team's nickel or dime packages.
As the 225th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, Thompson's four-year, $1.846 million contract included a $56,850 signing bonus. The Broncos signed Smith to a four-year, $4.83 million contract that included a $2.15 million signing bonus, but the $750,000 in remaining guarantees are for injury only, making Smith an appealing waiver-wire claim.
McDaniels and Xanders will likely find a spot for both, and not merely to save face. Smith may never live up to the freight paid to acquire him, but he's got talent and may just need more time to develop it.

Wilfork Addresses "Enhanced" Regular Season
During his weekly appearance on the "Dale & Holly Show" on Boston sports radio station WEEI, New England Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork discussed the NFL's proposed 18-game "enhanced" regular season.
"Well, that's going to be a big problem, because if you want to pay us like pre-season, it won’t work. But if you're going to take those two (pre-season games) and make it into a regular season game, we'll the pay has to be different, that’s point blank," Wilfork said.
"Me personally, a fan of football, I care less about 18-, 20-game season, as long as the pay is right," said Wilfork. "Don’t pay me as four preseason games when it’s only two preseason games, and the other two is regular-season games. So if you want it like that, well, you have to come out of your pockets for it.
"It won’t work if you put an 18-game season together and expect guys to play for two games for pre-season salary. It would not work. It would be a big problem."
Wilfork signed a five-year, $40 million contract, with $18 million in guarantees, in early March.
A theme is beginning to emerge from players with existing contracts: Their current contracts were based on a 16-game season.
"I need a new contract, or I'm not coming to camp", Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review last week regarding the NFL's 18-game proposal.
Harrison is entering the second year of a six-year, $51.175 million contract that included $20 million in guarantees.

No Surgery for Saints LB Jonathan Vilma
New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma visited on Monday with Dr. William Meyers, a Philadelphia-based sports hernia specialist, who confirmed that surgery on Vilma's groin was not required.
"We knew before he flew out this morning that the type of injury he had was not going to be a sports hernia surgery," Saints head coach Sean Payton said, via Mike Triplett of The Times-Picayune. "It's really more of the lower abductor-groin area," Payton said. "The key was just having another set of eyes on it to confirm what we found, and then basically set the plan in place for the rehab."
Payton ruled Vilma out for Thursday's pre-season finale, and hopes that with rest and rehab, Vilma will be ready to go for the 2010 regular season-opener against the Minnesota Vikings on September 9.
Vilma (6-1, 230) led the Saints with 110 tackles in 2009, adding a pair of quarterback sacks and three interceptions as the captain of an opportunistic Saints' defense that was pivotal in the team's win over the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV.

Seahawks Cut Roster Down to 75
The Seattle Seahawks confirmed that they have waived linebacker/defensive end Ricky Foley.
Defensive tackle Johnathan Lewis was "Waived/Injured", kicker Clint Stitser, wide receiver Kole Heckendorf, and offensive lineman Gregg Peat were waived, putting the Seahawks roster at 75 players one day before the league's deadline to do so.

49ers LT Joe Staley Has a Sprained Knee
San Francisco 49ers left tackle Joe Staley left tonight's pre-season game with a sprained knee.
Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com reports that the injury is to Staley's right knee, which kept him out for seven games during the 2009 season.

Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald reports that New England Patriots defensive lineman Ron Brace's injured ankle is just a sprain, and may only require a few days off.
Brace had 7 tackles and a quarterback sack against the St. Louis Rams on Thursday night, a solid performance dampened by concern about his ankle, which required an MRI on Friday.
The 40th overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft out of Boston College, Brace (6-3, 330) started two of nine games as a rookie, totaling just 8 tackles. Brace is expected to play a larger role on the Patriots' defensive line with Jarvis Green departing in free agency and Ty Warren landing on injured reserve with a hip injury.

Stanley Daniels Gets Chance to Earn Broncos' LG Job
Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post reports that left guard remains the one open starting job on the team, and tonight Stanley Daniels will get his chance to earn it.
"There's a lot of guys still competing for that job--we've not given the job to anybody," Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels said. "I think both players understand they're not where we want them to be. And they aren't where they want to be in terms of consistency and level of play all the time. I don't think that's a negative connotation for any player."
Due in part to the Broncos playing without Ryan Clady and its top two running backs (Knowshon Moreno, Correll Buckhalter), and starting a rookie center (J.D. Walton), the Broncos have the NFL's 31st-ranked rushing attack this pre-season, averaging just 55.5 yards per game.
Daniels (6-4, 328) has bounced around the NFL since signing with the St. Louis Rams as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Washington in 2007. Daniels spent the '07 season as a street free agent after being waived by the New York Jets, and spent the 2008 season on the Jets' practice squad. Daniels spent 15 weeks on the Green Bay Packers' practice squad last season before being waived in May and claimed by the Broncos.
Broncos second-round pick Zane Beadles has started the previous two pre-season games at left guard, and provided Clady is healthy, is the favorite to be the starter the position when the regular season opens. Given the recent injuries to Clady and right tackle Ryan Harris, though, getting work with the first-team offense will be valuable experience for Daniels.

Steelers Speak Out Against 18-Game Season
Pittsburgh Steelers players generally oppose the NFL's push for an 18-game regular season, Scott Brown of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
"Hate it," Steelers wide receiver Antwan Randle El said. "I'm not going to say we don't gain anything, but we lose more because we're already talking about health and concussions and all of these different things going on. To add two more games is just going to add to the injury list."
Steelers linebacker James Harrison tells Brown that his six-year, $51.175 million contract would void, as it was based on a 16-game regular season, while safety Troy Polamalu thinks players would go for it if player contracts become guaranteed.
"I guarantee you that every player would say, 'Yeah, if you guarantee us contracts, we'll have a 20-game season.'", Polamalu said.
For more thoughts on the 18-game season from the Steelers players and Pittsburgh-based agent and former NFL player Ralph Cindrich, click here.
For the record, I am opposed to any changes to the schedule. 16 regular season games is enough, and while four pre-season games aren't required for fans and star players to get ready for the regular season, they are critical for younger players trying to get a foot in the door. Decreased prices for pre-season games is a more acceptable option than decreasing the opportunities these players have to improve and make NFL rosters.

Colts Claim CB Danny Gorrer Off Waivers
According to a league source, the Indianapolis Colts have claimed cornerback Danny Gorrer off waivers from the New Orleans Saints.
Gorrer, who had a pair of special teams tackles in pre-season action this month, was waived by the Saints earlier this week, and will take the roster spot of veteran cornerback Marcus McCauley, who has been "Waived/Injured" with an undisclosed injury.
The 6-0, 178-pound Gorrer originally entered the NFL with the Saints, signing with the club last April as an undrafted free agent out of Texas A&M. Gorrer tallied seven tackles and a pass defensed or the Saints during the '09 pre-season, but was cut at the end of training camp and signed to the Saints' practice squad.
Signed by the St. Louis Rams off the Saints' practice squad midway through the '09 season, Gorrer appeared in three games for the Rams, totaling 5 tackles (4 on defense, 1 on special teams) and a pass defensed.
Gorrer started his first NFL game in Week 16 against the Arizona Cardinals.
