Seahawks Release G Chester Pitts

The Seattle Seahawks have released guard Chester Pitts, reports Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network.

La Canfora adds that Pitts' surgically-repaired knee had not recovered enough to be ready for game action, and the Seahawks need his roster spot. The Seahawks listed Pitts, who is attempting to comeback from microfracture surgery, as a "Full Participant" on Wednesday's injury report.

Prior to joining the Seahawks, Pitts had spent his entire NFL career with the Houston Texans, who selected him in the second-round in the 2002 NFL Draft out of San Diego State. Pitts had started 114 consecutive games for the Texans before his season-ending injury last September.

Part of the reason for signing Pitts was that he was familiar with the zone-blocking system of Alex Gibbs, who joined Pete Carroll's coaching staff in February. Gibbs resigned before the start of the season, with Art Valero handling those duties.

Gibbs' system preferred smaller, more athletic offensive linemen. Since Gibbs' resignation, the Seahawks have brought in larger-bodied individuals such as a Tyler Polumbus and Breno Giacomini, who are each 6-7 and weight between 300 and 310 pounds. The Seahawks have also traded for Stacy Andrews, a 6-6, 342-pound tackle who has started the last two games at right guard.

Ben Hamilton likely remains the team's starting left guard, though newly signed Allen Barbre was mentioned as a "left guard" candidate by Carroll on Wednesday.

The Seahawks have also re-signed guard Mike Gibson to the practice squad. Running back Chris Henry was released.
