Approximately $109.5 million dollars worth of performance-based pay has been distributed to players after the 2009 season.
Under the system, performance-based pay is computed by determining a "player index", which takes a player’s regular-season playtime (total plays on offense, defense and special teams) and divides it by his adjusted regular-season compensation (full season salary, prorated portion of signing bonus, earned incentives). Each player’s "index" is then compared to those of the other players on his team to determine the amount of his pay from a $3,422,875 each team was allotted to disperse amongst its players.
