Patriots-Saints Inactives

Here are the inactives for tonight's New England Patriots-New Orleans Saints game.

New England: WR Julian Edelman (3rd QB), RB Fred Taylor, CB Kyle Arrington, CB Shawn Springs, LB Junior Seau, G Rich Orhnberger, T Sebastian Vollmer, DL Ron Brace

New Orleans: RB Reggie Bush, CB Tracy Porter, CB Jabari Greer, WR Lance Moore, K Garrett Hartley, FB Kyle Eckel, LB Jonathan Casillas, DT Demario Pressley

Giants Place LB Antonio Pierce on IR

The New York Giants have placed middle linebacker Antonio Pierce on injured reserve, reports Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger.

Pierce was originally injured during the Giants' 24-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on October 25. Initially diagnosed as a "burner" or "stinger", an MRI ten days ago revealed a bulging disc in Pierce's neck. A second opinion by Dr. Robert Watkins in Los Angeles, who has also recently treated Philadelphia Eagles offensive guard Shawn Andrews and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, confirmed the bulging disc diagnosis.

The 31-year old middle linebacker has one year remaining on a six-year, $26 million dollar contract, but given his age, questionable health, declining skills, and salary ($4.75M) make him a prime candidate to be released after the season.

Panthers' Beason Facing Assault Charges

Carolina Panthers linebacker Jon Beason has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault, WCNC in Charlotte reports.

Darin Gantt of The Herald adds that it's related to a November 15 incident at a strip club.

He was released on a written promise to appear in court.

Mac's Week 12 Game Balls

My apologies for the lack of a "Morning Spin" post this morning, but a late-night charting the Seahawks-Rams game for Scout.com, followed by a morning with no heat/hot water, contributed to me not being very productive this morning.

That said, there were some noteworthy performances, so here's who earned a game ball from me on Sunday.

Offense - Brett Favre, QB, Minnesota Vikings
- Favre had another solid performance, completing 32-of-48 passes for 392 yards and three touchdowns in the Vikings' 36-10 shellacking of the Chicago Bears.

Defense - Darrelle Revis, CB, New York Jets
- Revis held Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith for one catch and 5 yards and had a pair of interceptions, returning one 67 yard for a touchdown.

Special Teams - LaRod Stephens-Howling, RB/KR, Arizona Cardinals - Stephens-Howling had a 98-yard kick return for a touchdown, which was a strong answer to Chris Johnson's 85-yard touchdown run in the 3rd quarter. Stephens-Howling also came up big as a gunner on punt returns, twice downing balls inside the Titans' 5-yard line.

Redskins' Rookie Jarmon to Miss Remainder of Season

Washington Redskins rookie defensive end Jeremy Jarmon will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL. Jarmon injured the knee during Sunday's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, which he underwent surgery on today.

Jarmon was chosen with a third-round pick in 2010 during July's supplemental draft after a failed drug test at the University of Kentucky made him in eligible for the 2009 season.

A reserve for the Redskins, Jarmon made 9 tackles during his rookie season.

Eli Manning Downplays Foot Injury

A day after ESPN reported that he's playing with a "stress reaction" in his foot, New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning downplayed his foot injury, reports Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger.

“It makes me frustrated because it’s kind of one thing leads to another,” Manning said on a Monday conference call with reporters. “When you have to go to the training room and get treatment, it just kind of throws your schedule out of whack. You have to get there early in the morning and stay after. Things that I normally do, it just kind of pushes everything back. It throws your normal schedule (off).

“I’m a guy that doesn’t like to be in the training room and I try to avoid it as much as possible. I only go in there when I truly need it. That’s been probably the biggest annoyance – just trying to deal with it.”

As Garafolo notes, Manning's poor performance against Denver on Thursday night came on the heels of two of his best two performances of the season, which saw him complete 50-of-72 passes for 599 yards and 5 touchdowns, suggesting that this injury--which he's had for weeks--hasn't impacted his play on the field.

Bears' Urlacher Criticizes Cutler

Yahoo! Sports writer Mike Silver spent the weekend with injured Chicago Bears middle linebacker Brian Urlacher and well, Urlacher made some comments that could be an issue in the Windy City.

“Look, I love Jay, and I understand he’s a great player who can take us a long way, and I still have faith in him,” Urlacher said. “But I hate the way our identity has changed. We used to establish the run and wear teams down and try not to make mistakes, and we’d rely on our defense to keep us in the game and make big plays to put us in position to win. Kyle Orton might not be the flashiest quarterback, but the guy is a winner, and that formula worked for us. I hate to say it, but that’s the truth.”

Panthers' Delhomme Has Broken Finger

Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox disclosed during his Monday morning press conference that quarterback Jake Delhomme has a broken finger on his throwing hand.

Delhomme suffered the injury during Sunday's 17-6 loss to the New York Jets.

Fox did not set a timetable for how long Delhomme would be sidelined, but did state that backup quarterback Matt Moore will get the first-team reps during practice on Wednesday.

The Panthers face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Steelers' Locker Room Was Split on Big Ben

During an interview with NBC's Bob Costas, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward conceded that the locker room was split on whether or not quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who missed last night's game over concerns regarding a head injury suffered the week before, should play or not.

"This game is almost like a playoff game. It's almost a must-win. I could see some players or teammates questioning, like 'It's just a concussion. I've played with a concussion before,'" Ward said.

"It's almost like a 50-50 toss-up in the locker room: Should he play? Shouldn't he play? It's really hard to say. I've been out there dinged up; the following week, got right back out there. Ben practiced all week. He split time with Dennis Dixon. And then to find out that he's still having some headaches and not playing and it came down to the doctors didn't feel that they were going to clear him or not -- it's hard to say. Unless you're the person [himself]. ... I've lied to a couple of doctors saying I'm straight, I feel good when I know that I'm not really straight."

Ward has "clarified" to ESPN, though as Mike Florio at ProFootballTalk.com notes, it's more like a retraction.

Bucs Lose Pair of Players for the Season

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have placed cornerback Torrie Cox and punter Dirk Johnson on injured reserve, Jim Flynn of PewterReport.com reports.

Both players were injured during the Buccaneers' 20-17 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, with Cox injuring his hip and Johnson injuring his left hamstring. Cornerback Brandon Anderson has been signed to the active roster.

Buccaneers guard Arron Sears, who hasn't played this season, was placed on the "Reserve/Non-Football Injury" list. Sears did not report to training camp for reasons that remain a mystery.

PFW's Report on Ruskell

Yesterday, Pro Football Weekly posted a one-paragraph article that read:

"Inside sources have told PFW that beleaguered Seahawks GM Tim Ruskell, who is in the final year of his contract, has been told that he will not be re-signed after this season. With Ruskell now reportedly splitting the scene at season’s end, the door appears to have opened for Mike Holmgren to return to the Seahawks as the head of football operations."

Since there's no name attached to this report, which was attributed to "PFW Staff", makes this pansy journalism.

Had a reporter attached his/her name to the item, and then this turned out to not be true, that person's credibility would be lessened by an erroneous report. By attributing to the "staff", if this report turns out to be false--and SI's Peter King, whose daughter works for the Seahawks, seems to think Ruskell can save his job between now and the end of the season--PFW has provided itself with some cover.

If pressed, they can simply say "We hear a lot of whispers and rumors about fluid situations, and hey, that one turned on us", without suffering a hit in their credibility, which is why I'm giving zero credence to the report.

Browns Lose Shaun Rogers for Remainder of Season

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports that Cleveland Browns nose tackle Shaun Rogers will miss the remainder of the season with an ankle or Achilles' injury.

Rogers, 30, has 32 tackles, 1 quarterback sack, and nine quarterback hits this season, his second with the Browns since being acquired from the Detroit Lions in 2008.

Last season, Rogers had 76 tackles and 4.5 quarterback sacks, earning Pro Bowl honors after the season.

Steelers-Ravens Inactives

Here are the inactives for tonight's Pittsburgh Steelers-Baltimore Ravens game:

Baltimore: QB John Beck (3rd QB), CB Cary Williams, FB Charles Ali, LB Antwan Barnes, LB Terrell Suggs, T Oniel Cousins, T Tony Moll, DT Kelly Talavou

Rams' Smith Taken to Hospital

The Associated Press reports St. Louis Rams first-round offensive tackle Jason Smith, the second overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft, was taken to the hospital after feeling ill during the fourth quarter of the Rams' 27-17 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

According to the Associated Press report, Smith, who was inactive for the game after suffering a concussion last week against Arizona, was seen vomiting on the sidelines.

After a quick perusal through the DVR, I can add that Smith exchanged a fist-bump with fellow offensive lineman Richie Incognito before exiting the sidelines with a member of the team's medical staff with 11:51 remaining in the game. As Smith was getting up, FOX sideline reporter Nischelle Turner reported that Smith hadn't passed his baseline concussion test, and he was having problems with his vision and multi-tasking.

Smith was scheduled to undergo another baseline test on Monday.

Kurt Warner May Not Start Today

CBS studio analyst Boomer Esiason reported that Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner "wasn't feeling good" when he woke up this morning. Further reporting, including that done by ESPN's Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen, discovered that Warner had a sore neck.

Warner suffered a head/neck injury last week against St. Louis, and he sat out the second half.

At this point, it appears unlikely that Warner will play today against the Tennessee Titans, meaning Matt Leinart would make his first NFL start since 2007.

Haynesworth Won't Play Today vs. Philadelphia

Reports out of Lincoln Financial Field are that Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth won't play today against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Haynesworth has been hobbled by an ankle injury, which kept him out of the Redskins' 7-6 loss to the Dallas Cowboys last week.

After signing a $100M contract in the off-season, the 6-6, 350-pound run stuffer has 27 tackles, including five for a loss, and 3 quarterback sacks in nine starts for the Redskins this season.

Bucs Leave Jim Bates Behind

Recently demoted from his defensive coordinator position, Jim Bates did not accompany the team on their flight to Atlanta on Saturday, Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune reports.

Cummings suggests that the decision to stay behind was Bates', and that it may be a signal that Bates is close to leaving the organization entirely.

Schefter: Eli Manning Has Another Foot Injury

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning's decision to play through plantar fasciatis has caused "a stress reaction" in his right foot.

The "stress reaction" is in the cuboid bone and could potentially lead to a more serious injury--one that may require season-ended surgery--down the road. Per Schefter, Manning has received additional treatment on his foot, and has been wearing more protective footwear to guard the injury.

What's the difference between a "stress reaction" and a "stress fracture"?

According to eorthopod.com: "The difference between a 'reaction' and 'fracture' is a matter of degree. Both suggest a disruption of the bone metabolism. Fracture can be seen on most imaging studies (X-ray, MRI, CT scan), whereas a stress reaction only shows up as increased bone activity on a bone scan. Both injuries cause midfoot pain and swelling. Weight-bearing (walking, running) make it worse; resting makes it better. Both should be treated with six weeks of casting with nonweightbearing."

For you non-M.D.'s out there, here's a look at where on the foot the "cuboid" bone is located.

Jets Release CB/KR Miller For Missing Team Meeting

Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News reports that the New York Jets waived cornerback/return specialist Justin Miller because he missed a team meeting.

Miller becomes the second Jets' defensive back released this season for insubordination reasons.

Cornerback Ahmad Carroll was released earlier this month after refusing to take a written test administered by his position coach, Dennis Thurman. The Jets have also demoted team captain Kerry Rhodes, a Pro Bowl safety who hasn't lived up to a $33.5 million dollar contract extension he signed during the off-season.

Do you think Rex Ryan misses Ed Reed?

Colts' Freeney Ruled "Out" For Sunday

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Indianapolis Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney has been ruled "Out" for Sunday's game against the Houston Texans.

Freeney, who had been listed as "Questionable" with a abdominal injury, did not accompany the team on their trip to Houston. In 14 career games against Houston, Freeney has 12.5 quarterback sacks and three forced fumbles.

With Freeney out, the undefeated Colts will start Raheem Brock on the right side of their defensive line.

Dolphins Downgrade Grove, Doston to "Out"

Miami Dolphins center Jake Grove and defensive end Lionel Dotson were listed as "Doubtful" with ankle injuries on the team's injury report.

The Hall of Fame's Class of 2010 will be finalized on Saturday, February 6, the day before Super Bowl XLIV.

NFL Fines Pair of Texans

Houston Texans defensive end Antonio Smith was fined $10,000 for his elbowing of Tennessee Titans center Kevin Mawae on Monday night. Also fined was first-round linebacker Brian Cushing, for an unnecessary roughness flag after pushing Titans quarterback Vince Young after he was out of bounds on a scramble.

Not fined from Monday night's game was safety John Busing, who was flagged for a horse-collar tackle on Titans running back Chris Johnson.

Busing made a nice open-field tackle, dragging Johnson down by the back of his jersey after a 3-yard gain. Busing's hand never got inside Johnson's shoulder pads, yet a flag was thrown and the Texans were penalized 15 yards on the Titans' game-winning field goal drive.

Players flagged for horse-collar tackles are usually dinged for $7,500.

Steelers Rule Roethlisberger Out for Sunday

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will not play tomorrow night against the Baltimore Ravens.

Roethlisberger suffered a head injury during overtime of the Steelers' 27-24 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last week. Though he was cleared to practice after displaying no concussion symptoms, Roethlisberger did experience some headaches after practicing this week. The sixth-year quarterback told head coach Mike Tomlin late this week that he leery about playing on Sunday, fearful of taking another shot to the head so soon after the one against the Chiefs.

Second-year quarterback Dennis Dixon took most of the reps on Friday and will make the start. Also, quarterback Tyler Palko, signed to the practice squad this week, will be signed to the active roster today.

Veteran wide receiver Shaun McDonald will be released.

Bulger's Future in St. Louis in Question

St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger is hurt once again, which has many questioning whether or not Bulger will be with the franchise in 2010.

"I don't even want to talk about that," Bulger said. "We're going to have plenty of time in the offseason to make those decisions around here. But we've got a quarter — or a third — of the season to go, and I don't want to be a distraction in any way that way."

A month before the 2009 NFL draft, I made the case that the Rams should consider drafting Mark Sanchez or Matthew Stafford with the 2nd overall pick.

Jason Smith was a fine pick, but the Rams are once again headed for a Top 5 draft pick and may have no choice but to draft a quarterback (Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford, Jake Locker, Jimmy Clausen) this time around, even though Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy would look real good in the middle of Steve Spagnuolo's 29th-ranked defense.

NFL News and Notes - November 28, 2009

Here's today's spin around the NFL.

New England Patriots offensive tackle Mark LeVoir's value is his versatility.

Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Marcus Stroud will play on Sunday against Miami.

Miami Dolphins second-round cornerback Sean Smith is ready for his rematch with Terrell Owens.

New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is on the hot seat.

Cincinnati Bengals running back Cedric Benson will be a game-time decision.

New Cleveland Browns linebacker Matt Roth admits to having a falling out with his former team, the Miami Dolphins.

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Jameel McClain has been playing multiple positions this season.

Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Travis Kirschke is ready to return.

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak still has confidence in kicker Kris Brown.

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio would like to wear a suit on the sidelines.

Tennessee Titans quarterback Kerry Collins isn't bitter about being on the bench.

Unlike this week's opponent, the Indianapolis Colts defense is mostly comprised of mid-to-late round picks.

Denver Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno ran with authority on Thursday night, writes Mike Klis of the Denver Post.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley will know on Sunday if giving the team the day off on Thursday was a good idea.

San Diego Chargers long-snapper David Binn will play in his 250th consecutive games.

Oakland Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha blamed the short week of preparation for the big plays the defense gave up on Thursday.

They're 8-3 and sitting alone atop the NFC East, but December will be the truest test for the Dallas Cowboys.

The New York Giants will use the 10 days off between games to self-scout and correct some of what's plagued them in recent weeks.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb and his wife, Roxie, became parents for the fourth time last week.

Washington Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall will miss Sunday's game against Philadelphia.

Chicago Bears defensive tackle Israel Idonije was fined $5,000 for grabbing Donovan McNabb's face-mask in Week 11.

Detroit Lions first-round tight end Brandon Pettigrew's rookie season is over.

Green Bay Packers fourth-round offensive lineman T.J. Lang has been a solid contributor in his rookie season.

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is questionable for Sunday's game against Chicago.

Atlanta Falcons third-round cornerback Christopher Owens could start at left cornerback soon, perhaps as early as this Sunday.

Recent injuries have contributed to more rushing yards allowed by the Carolina Panthers.

New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis is set to return on Monday night.

Opposing tight ends have done well against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Arizona Cardinals backup quarterbacks Matt Leinart and Brian St. Pierre are following Kurt Warner's lead by wearing gloves on their throwing hands.

Seattle Seahawks running back Julius Jones will be a game-time decision.

St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger isn't ready to discuss his future.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary clarified comments he made earlier in the week about quarterback Alex Smith.

Today's NFL birthdays: Cardinals quarterback Brian St. Pierre (30), Chiefs tight end Brad Cottam (25), Dolphins nose tackle Jason Ferguson (35), Vikings guard Artis Hicks (31), and Steelers cornerback Joe Burnett (23).

Rams' Jackson Reports Back is Feeling Better

St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson has been held out of practice all week. He's officially listed as "questionable" for Sunday, but tonight he posted on Twitter that he's getting better.

"The back is getting better. Thx for the love everyone"

Jackson leads the NFC in rushing (1,031 yards) and also leads the Rams in receptions. Your back would be sore, too, if you were carrying an NFL franchise on it the way Jackson has.

Roethlisberger May Sit Out Sunday's Game

NFL.com's Jason La Canfora reports that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has told the team that he may want to sit out Sunday's game with the Baltimore Ravens as a precaution.

Roethlisberger suffered a head injury during overtime of the the team's 27-24 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last Sunday. He hasn't demonstrated any symptoms of having a concussion and has been cleared to practice, which has this week, but as recently as yesterday, the Steelers were kicking the tires on veteran quarterbacks.

Officially listed as "questionable" on the team's injury report, La Canfora reports that the sixth-year quarterback informed head coach Mike Tomlin that he fears being hit in the head this soon after what happened last week against Kansas City.

With veteran backup Charlie Batch undergoing wrist surgery this week, second-year quarterback Dennis Dixon is the only other healthy quarterback on the team's 53-man roster.

Pittsburgh signed quarterback Tyler Palko to the practice squad.

Mac's Picks - 2009 Week 12

This week: 1-2
Last week: 8-8
2009 season: 86-76-1

Miami (-3) at Buffalo – Miami looked pretty good without Ronnie Brown, but getting Marcus Stroud back should help the Bills’ run defense. Pick: Bills +3

Washington at Philadelphia (-9) – Got a feeling a victorious Donovan McNabb will have another 2-to-3 minute long conversation with the opposing quarterback after this one. Pick: Eagles -9

Tampa Bay at Atlanta (-12) – Matt Ryan needs a big game to get back on track. Playing at home helps, but having Michael Turner this Sunday would be huge. Pick: Falcons -12

Indianapolis (-3 ½) at Houston – The Texans always play the Colts close, regardless of venue. Take the Texans as home ‘dogs and thank me later. Pick: Texans +3 ½

Cleveland at Cincinnati (-14) – I not only expect the Bengals to rebound from last week’s loss in Oakland to go undefeated in AFC North action, I expect them to do it in style. Pick: Bengals -14

Carolina at NY Jets (-3) – Neither team trusts their quarterbacks too much, so both will run, run, and then run some more. I like Carolina’s backs a little bit more than New York’s. Pick: Panthers +3

Seattle (-3) at St. Louis – Fortunately for the Rams, few in St. Louis will see their team drop a 10th straight game to the Seahawks. Pick: Seahawks -3

Kansas City at San Diego (-13 ½) – Last week’s win over the Steelers gives the Chiefs a boost, but the Chargers are a veteran team that knows they need to win to remain atop the AFC West. Pick: Chargers -13 ½

Jacksonville at San Francisco (-3) – Hard to believe, but this will be the first time the Jaguars will travel to San Francisco. They’ll be glad to wait another 8 years before doing it again. Pick: 49ers -3

Chicago at Minnesota (-10 ½) - Favre always plays well against Chicago, and has been lights out at the Metrodome this season. Pick: Vikings -10 ½

Arizona at Tennessee (-3) – Arizona’s undefeated record on the road this season is about to come to an end. Pick: Titans -3

Pittsburgh at Baltimore (pick ‘em) - It’s after Thanksgiving and this is the first meeting between these AFC North rivals. In a rematch of the 2008 AFC title game, I expect similar results. Pick: Steelers

New England at New Orleans (-1 ½) – I’ve gotten quite a chuckle in recent years about ESPN’s lackluster MNF schedule. No more. Pick: Patriots +1 ½

Purple Jesus Questionable for Sunday

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was held out of practice on Friday with an illness, and was listed on the team's official injury report as "questionable" with an ankle injury, reports Judd Zulgad of the Star Tribune.

That means Peterson, who ranks 3rd in the NFL in rushing this season with 999 yards, has a 50/50 chance of playing on Sunday against Chicago.

If Peterson can't go on Sunday, or is limited, Chester Taylor will get more carries. Albert Young may also be active for the first time this season.

Lions' Pettigrew to Miss Remainder of the Season

Detroit Lions first-round tight end Brandon Pettigrew will miss the remainder of the season after injuring his knee during the opening drive of the Lions' 34-12 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thursday.

An MRI performed on Pettigrew's left knee determined that surgery was required to fix the injury.

The former Oklahoma State standout was the 20th overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft. In 10 games this season, Pettigrew has 30 receptions, 346 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Pettigrew had 1 catch for 12 yards on Thursday, and was coming off his best game as a pro. (6 catches, 72 yards, 1 touchdown vs. Cleveland)

Texans Sign CB Mark Parson Off Saints Practice Squad

The Houston Texans have signed rookie cornerback Mark Parson off the New Orleans Saints practice squad.

Parson (5-10, 188) went undrafted out of Ohio University, and tried out with the Detroit Lions before eventually signing with the Houston Texans. Parson made three tackles during the pre-season, but was always a long-shot to make the 53-man roster and was waived at the end of training camp.

Houston signed him to their practice squad to open the season, and he spent two weeks there before being released. New Orleans signed Parson to their practice squad on November 4.

Parson replaces veteran second-year cornerback Antwaun Molden, who was placed on injured reserve.

Chris Polian Named Colts' General Manager

Indianapolis Colts vice president of football operations Chris Polian has been a hot name in NFL circles when it comes to who might be tabbed to run an NFL franchise.

Tonight, the Indianapolis Star reports that Polian isn't going anywhere, agreeing to a contract extension that now gives Polian the title of "General Manager" and lists him as the heir apparent to his father Bill, who has been running the Colts organization since 1998.

Whenever Bill Polian decides to retire, Chris will step up and assume the day-to-day responsibilities of the franchise.

Mini-Mangini Goes on a Tirade

Seriously, how long before those guys in the locker room ask themselves "This guy is a head coach?"

Raiders-Cowboys Inactives

Below are the inactives for this afternoon's Oakland Raiders-Dallas Cowboys game.

Oakland: QB Charlie Frye (3rd QB), LB David Nixon, LB Slade Norris, T Khalif Barnes, T Erik Pears, WR Javon Walker, WR Nick Miller, WR Todd Watkins

Dallas: QB Stephen McGee (3rd QB), S Ken Hamlin, CB Cletis Gordon, LB Jason Williams, G Montrae Holland, C Duke Preston, T Marc Colombo, LB Curtis Johnson

Steelers to Work Out Veteran QBs

Ben Roethlisberger is coming off a head injury, and Charlie Batch had surgery on his wrist and will miss a few weeks. So FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer reports that the Pittsburgh Steelers are taking a look at a pair of veteran free agent passers.

In for workouts today are Todd Bouman and Patrick Ramsey.

Bouman, 37, hasn't taken a regular season NFL snap since 2007, and hasn't started an NFL game since 2005. In 11 NFL seasons since being undrafted coming out of St. Cloud State, Bouman completed 129-of-230 pass attempts for 1,683 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions during stints with the Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, Jacksonville Jaguars, St. Louis Rams, and last season with the Baltimore Ravens.

Ramsey, a first-round pick (32nd overall) by the Washington Redskins in 2002, was released earlier this season by the Tennessee Titans. Ramsey has completed 56% of passes for 5,930 yards and 35 touchdowns, with 30 interceptions, during his career. Since 2006, Ramsey has only appeared in four regular seasons during stints with the New York Jets (2006), Denver Broncos (2006-07), and Titans (2008).

Roethlisberger did practice fully on Wednesday and is expected to start on Sunday against the Ravens, so today's quarterback workouts are the Steelers' front office doing their due diligence, not only if something were to happen with Big Ben, but if Batch's recovery from surgery suffers any setbacks.

Packers-Lions Inactives

Here are the inactives for today's Green Bay Packers-Detroit Lions game.

Green Bay: WR Biron Ealy, CB Josh Bell, S Matt Giordano, RB Ahman Green, T Breno Giacomini, LB Aaron Kampman, T Allen Barbre, DE Jairus Wynn

Detroit: QB Drew Stanton (3rd QB), WR Derrick Williams, S Kalvin Pearson, LB Ernie Sims, T Ephraim Salaam, DE Dewayne White, FB Terrelle Smith, C Melvin Fowler

Stafford to Start for Lions

Wow.

Though never officially ruled out for today's game against the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions first-round quarterback Matthew Stafford was doubtful to play after separating his non-throwing shoulder during last week's 38-37 win over the Cleveland Browns.

Multiple reports out of Detroit this morning are that Stafford, not Daunte Culpepper, will be the team's starting quarterback this afternoon.

Martz Interested in the Bills' HC Job

The Buffalo Bills have wanted to interview Super Bowl-winning head coaches Bill Cowher and Mike Holmgren, but those requests have been rebuffed. On Monday night and Tuesday morning, the Bills met with Mike Shanahan, who coached the Denver Broncos to a pair of Lombardi Trophies in the late 90s, for seven hours.

According to ESPN.com, they can have former St. Louis Rams head coach Mike Martz, if they want him.

Martz, 58, currently works for the NFL Network, and has been rumored to be a possible candidate for the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator position, should Bears head coach Lovie Smith make a change at that position on his staff.

In six seasons as the head coach of the St. Louis Rams, Martz posted a 53-32 (.624) regular season record, and was 3-4 in the post-season after taking over for Dick Vermeil in 2000. He coached the Rams to Super Bowl XXXVI, which they lost to the New England Patriots.

Martz has also worked as an offensive coordinator in Detroit and San Francisco since health issues prompted him to step down as the Rams' head coach early in the 2005 season.

Mac's Thanksgiving Day Picks

A clean sweep of last week's late-game and primetime schedule allowed me avoid disaster and finish 8-8 on my picks. For the season, my record is a respectable 85-74-1 headed into Week 12.

As for today's action:

Green Bay (10.5) at Detroit - It's been a miserable decade for the Detroit Lions, but what Matthew Stafford's gutsy performance last Sunday has to have them feeling as though the front office/coaching combo got it right when they took him 1st overall in the 2009 NFL Draft. Pick: Packers -10.5

Oakland at Dallas (-13.5) - The Raiders can play defense, and they'll have a very motivated Greg Ellis on their side. The long-time Cowboys linebacker will want to sully JerryWorld's Thanksgiving Day debut. Pick: Raiders +13.5

NY Giants (-7) at Denver - Last week's 32-3 loss, at home, to the San Diego Chargers was a sign to me that this Broncos team is more like the 5-11 one I thought headed into the season, than the one that looked like an 11-win team at the beginning of the season. The slide continues. Pick: Giants -7

Rams' Jackson Held Out of Practice

With Kyle Boller expected to start at quarterback this Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, much of the focus of the St. Louis Rams offense will be focused on running back Steven Jackson.

Complicating matters for the Rams is that Jackson missed today's practice with back spasms.

"It’s day to day," Jackson said. "Anyone that’s had any back problems knows that it’s just one of those things where you’ve got to wait it out. There’s really nothing you can do. I’ve spent countless hours since Sunday, trying to get it back together. Hopefully it’ll release a little bit and allow me to practice."

Jackson has an NFC-best 1,031 yards rushing, which ranks second in the NFL behind Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson. Jackson also leads the Rams in receptions (35).

Jets Address Kerry Rhodes Benching

Last night, FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer announced on Twitter, that members of the New York Jets were telling him that starting safety Kerry Rhodes, a team captain and recent recipient of a contract that contained $20 million in guarantees, was being benched for safety Eric Smith.

Today, the Jets confirmed that.

"You have to make some decisions that you think are in the best interest of the football team," Jets head coach Rex Ryan said on Wednesday.

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reports that Rhodes' $20 million guaranteed is a bit less, as $4.78 million dollars of that figure is guaranteed for injury only, meaning if he could be released for skill/cap purposes and the Jets wouldn't owe him that money.

Texans Sign S Brian Russell

The Houston Texans announced that they have placed safety Eugene Wilson on season-ending injured reserve, and have replaced with veteran safety Brian Russell.

Wilson had 29 tackles and 2 interceptions this season, his second with the Texans after spending the first five seasons of his career with the New England Patriots, who chose him in the second round (36th overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft out of Illinois.

Russell was waived by the Jacksonville Jaguars last Saturday. The 8-year veteran began his career with the Minnesota Vikings, and spent two seasons each with the Cleveland Browns and Seattle Seahawks, who released him at the end of this year's training camp.

With Wilson out, safety John Busing is expected to get the start. The fourth-year player from Miami (Ohio) started one game earlier this season at strong safety.

Bills Do Some Roster Shuffling

The Buffalo Bills continued to shuffle their roster, placing veteran center/guard Seth McKinney on season-ending injured reserve. Offensive lineman Christian Gaddis was promoted off the practice squad to fill McKinney's spot on the 53-man roster.

Gaddis was cut by the team at the end of training camp and was re-signed to the practice squad just last week. The former University of Maryland center/guard appeared in one game for the Bills in 2007, his rookie season.

To fill out their practice squad, the Bills have signed defensive tackle Lonnie Harvey (6-3, 342 - Morgan State) and offensive tackle Jason Watkins (6-6, 317- Florida). Both Harvey and Watkins entered the NFL in 2009 as undrafted free agents, with Harvey joining the Carolina Panthers and Watkins signing with the Houston Texans.

Watkins was recently a member of the UFL's New York Sentinels.

Redskins' Gray Lands Memphis Head Coaching Job

Washington Redskins secondary coach Jerry Gray will be named the next head football coach at the University of Memphis, ESPN.com's Joe Schad reports.

Gray interviewed earlier this week, and the decision has been reportedly been made to hire him.

ESPN.com's NFC East blogger Matt Moseley thinks Redskins owner Daniel Snyder will likely allow Gray, a highly-respected coach in the NFL, out of his contract early so that he can get a head-start on the recruiting trail.

Ford Field to Sell Turkey Drumsticks and Stuffing

For $29.95, club-level ticket holders for Thursday's Green Bay Packers-Detroit Lions game at Ford Field will be able to have sit-down Thanksgiving dinner.

Fans not seated in the club-level, however, will be able to purchase turkey drumsticks and stuffing for $8.50, which begs the question:

As a guy who always lays claim to one of the drumsticks on Thanksgiving, or whenever there's a turkey present, why can't this be a concession-stand item throughout football season?

Martz to the Bears?

Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that a source close to former St. Louis Rams head coach Mike Martz says that Martz "would love to work with Jay Cutler".

With current offensive coordinator Ron Turner under fire, it might be tempting for Lovie Smith to hire his former boss in St. Louis, where Martz was the architect for the "Greatest Show on Turf". Under Martz's direction, the Rams' offense ranked 1st in the NFL from 1999-2001 and 2nd in 2003, with the Rams winning four NFC West titles during those years and hoisting the Lombardi Trophy on one two trips to the Super Bowl.

While Martz has struggled in recent coordinator stints in Detroit (2007) and San Francisco (2008), and has a reputation for "going rogue", his system has proven to be very quarterback-friendly, particularly to those with the arm strength of a Jay Cutler.

Current Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner was named the NFL's MVP in 1999 and 2001, and was selected for the Pro Bowl in each of his three years at the helm of the Rams' offense. Rams quarterback Marc Bulger also went to the Pro Bowl in 2003, his first full season as the team's starting quarterback.

Redskins to Sign QB Off Jaguars Practice Squad

Jason Reid of the Washington Post reports that the Washington Redskins are planning to sign quarterback Richard Bartel off the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad.

The Redskins have an open roster spot fter placing three players (Ladell Betts, Eddie Williams, and Chad Rinehart) on injured reserve earlier this week.

An undrafted free agent from Tarleton State, Bartel entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent and has completed 69-of-102 pass attempts for 662 yards and a pair of interceptions during two pre-season stints with the Dallas Cowboys (2007-08) and one with the Cleveland Browns (2009).

Bartel joined the Jaguars' practice squad on September 5, and had been paid at a much higher rate ($10,000/wk) than the normal practice squad player ($5,200/wk) routinely makes.

The Redskins have also deleted quarterback Andre Woodson from their practice squad. With that spot, they're expected to add fullback Jonathan Evans, who was with them during training camp and most recently was on the Houston Texans' practice squad.

Buccaneers Sign Off. Coordinator to Extension

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed offensive coordinator Greg Olsen to a contract extension, Charlie Campbell and Scott Reynolds of the PewterReport.com, um, report.

"Olson, who was in the final year of his contract prior to signing the extension, was hired to be the team’s quarterbacks coach before the 2008 season, and was promoted to coordinator prior to the ‘09 preseason finale when Tampa Bay fired offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski on September 3. Olson signed a multi-year extension several weeks ago, but there is a stipulation for 2011 in case there is a league-wide lockout and a cancellation of that year's regular season. The exact terms of the contract were not disclosed to PewterReport.com."

The Buccaneers have the 29th-ranked offense this season, but they've also had injury issues on the offensive line, wide receiver, and have started three different quarterbacks, including first-round pick Josh Freeman.

Signing Olsen to an extension offers Freeman an opportunity to develop under the coordinator, which not all quarterbacks are allowed to do. (see Campbell, Jason)
