Chiefs, Larry Johnson Reach Settlement
The Kansas City Chiefs and running back Larry Johnson have reached a settlement, ESPN.com's Chris Mortensen reports.
Johnson will still be suspended for two weeks, but instead of being docked two game checks, he'll only be docked one game check, along with 1/16th of a $1M roster bonus that's paid weekly based on the number of games he's active for.
In total, Johnson will lose $330,147, which is $267,647 less than the $597,794 he was to lose had his agent, Peter Schaffer not negotiated this settlement.

Redskins Officially Place T Chris Samuels on IR
Gary Fitzgerald of Redskins.com reports that the Washington Redskins have officially placed left tackle Chris Samuels on injured reserve.
Samuels has played with spinal stenosis, and on October 11, he injured his neck during a game against the Carolina Panthers. The six-time Pro Bowler still hasn't made a final decision regarding his future in the NFL, though he is expected to retire due to his neck condition.
No corresponding roster spot was made, leaving the team with 52 players on their active roster.

Seahawks' Mora Not Interested in Seeing JerryWorld
Seattle Seahawks head coach Jim Mora couldn't care less about the Dallas Cowboys' $1 billion dollar stadium.
During his informal Friday meeting with the media, an attempt was made to ask Mora about the league's newest stadium, but Mora wasn't having any of it.
Reporter: "I know football is obviously the focus, but at the same time when you go into a new stadium, are you interested at all..."
Mora: "Nope."
Reporter: "...to see what this place looks like."
"I couldn't care less about that new stadium," Mora said. "I'm not going to go out early and look at it. I don't care. It's the same exact turf we've got here. That's all that matters."
With the Seahawks 2-4 and in a must-win situation, no one can say Mora isn't keeping his eye on the ball.

Patriots Check Out Special Teamers
Christopher Price of WEEI.com confirms that the New England Patriots have checked out a couple of specialists during their bye week.
Working out were kickers Mike Nugent and Connor Barth, punter Tim Masthay, and long-snapper Joe Zelenka.
Current Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski, a Pro Bowl selection in 2007, has hit on 13-of-16 of his field goal tries, though he's only 2-of-4 from beyond 40 yards. It's unlikely that the Patriots would make an in-season change, as Gostkowski is a bonafide weapon on kickoffs, tied for the league-lead with 13 touchbacks.
So why have the Patriots chosen to look at specialists?
It's simple, really. During the course of the season, NFL teams bring in a cluster of players at one position, or two related positions (WR-CB, DL-OL, LB-RB), so they can get a look at players they've been interested in, or feel could fit within their scheme based on film they've seen on the player, to create a "hot list" of players they'll call in case of an injury.
Take the Seattle Seahawks, for example. An hour or so before Jim Mora's press conference on Wednesday, the one where he announced that Lofa Tatupu was consulting with Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama on his torn pectoral muscle, I reported that the team had added rookie linebacker Anthony Heygood to its practice squad.
Adding a linebacker wasn't a total surprise, given the serious of Tatupu's injury, but Heygood got the call because he was at the top of the team's hot list based on his workout on September 30.
So I wouldn't pay too much attention to the Patriots working these particular players out this week. However, if something happens to Gostkowski, Chris Hanson, or Jake Ingram, don't be surprised to see one of those guys Price lists above on Route 1 the next day.

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco appeared on "Late Night with David Letterman" last night to present the nightly Top Ten list. The theme was "Top Ten Revelations in Chad Ochocinco's Autobiography".

Seahawks Place Lofa Tatupu on IR
A day after placing their nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle on injured reserve, the Seattle Seahawks will do the same with three-time Pro Bowl middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu.
Famed orthopedist Dr. James Andrews examined Tatupu in his Birmingham, Alabama office on Wednesday, and surgery was recommended to repair a torn pectoral muscle, which occurred during the Seahawks' 27-3 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on October 18.
According to Matt Pitman of 710 ESPN Seattle, the surgery was being performed today.
Tatupu was slowed earlier this season by a troublesome left hamstring injury, which kept him out of the second game of his NFL career in Week 3. Tatupu returned to action in Week 4 and his pectoral muscle was torn when he collided with teammate Deon Grant late in the first half.
With Tatupu done for the year, second-year linebacker David Hawthorne will start at middle linebacker. Hawthorne had 17 tackles and an interception in his first NFL start in Week 3.

Saints Place FB Heath Evans on IR
The New Orleans Saints placed fullback Heath Evans on injured reserve, Jeff Duncan of The Times-Picayune reports.
Free agent fullback Kyle Eckel was signed to replace Evans on the 53-man roster.
Evans signed a two-year contract with the Saints in the off-season, and had 5 carries for 16 yards with a 1 touchdown, and caught 10 passes for 70 yards and a pair of touchdowns through the team's first six games. Evans tore the ACL in his right knee during the Saints' 46-34 win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

Bucs Owner Denies Radio Station Report
Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner Joel Glazer denies a report from Tampa radio station WDAE that the team is up for sale.
"The report today by WDAE’s Dan Sileo about our family and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is 100 percent false.
"The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not, nor have they ever been for sale. In addition, our family or any of our related companies have never invested one penny with Bernie Madoff.
"The report is baseless, irresponsible and slanderous. This type of behavior by Mr. Sileo and his company Clear Channel will be dealt with in the appropriate manner."

Lions-Rams to Be Blacked Out
To the surprise of no one, this Sunday's Detroit Lions-St. Louis Rams game at Ford Field is nowhere near a sellout and will be blacked out locally, John Niyo of the Detroit News reports.
More than 10,000 seats remain for a meeting of two teams who are a combined 1-12 this season, and over the last 2.5 seasons, are a combined 13-64.

Boley, Canty Return to Giants Practice
Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger reports that New York Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty (calf) and linebacker Michael Boley (knee), two of the team's high-profile free agent signings this off-season, returned to practice on Thursday.
Canty has been out since Week 2, while Boley has been out since having knee surgery after the Giants' 27-16 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4. Suspended for the first game of the season, Boley has 14 tackles, including four a loss and a pair of passes defended in three games. Meanwhile, Canty has only appeared in the Giants' season-opening win over Washington, where he made a pair of tackles.
Boley signed a 5-year, $25M contract with $11M guaranteed on February 28, while Canty signed a 7-year, $42M contract with $16M guaranteed the following day.

Titans Name Vince Young the Starter
Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher will name Vince Young the team's starting quarterback for this Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, The Tennessean reports.
Through six weeks, Collins has completed 108-of-197 passes for 1,071 yards, 5 touchdowns and 8 interceptions, for a passer rating of 62. Young has yet to complete any of his 5 pass attempts this season, throwing one interception against the New England Patriots in Week 6.
With the Titans at 0-6, and the team needing to make a decision on Young next off-season, the decision to start him against Jacksonville makes sense from a football level. It's also smart for Jeff Fisher, the longest-tenured head coach in the NFL, to respect the wishes of owner Bud Adams, a vocal supporter of Young who has been drowning in a sea of criticism in recent seasons.

Glazer Family Trying to Sell the Buccaneers
WDAE in Tampa is reporting that the Glazer family is attempting to sell the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
According to their report, the asking price is $1.085 billion dollars. Conveniently, that was the exact listed franchise value placed on the franchise by Forbes magazine.
Nicholas Carson of The Business Insider speculates that one reason the Glazer's may be seeking to sell the Buccaneers is the level of debt they have after their recent purchase of Manchester United of the English Premier League.
The Glazer family bought the Buccaneers for $192 million dollars in 1995.

“It felt good to get back in the costume,” Hardwick said. “We don't know how close or far I am yet. It just depends on how I feel tomorrow, and then we'll go stress it again tomorrow and see how I feel. It's a process.”
Hardwick's timetable for return was placed at eight weeks, so for him to return to practice after five weeks puts him at, or ahead of, his targeted date to return to the field on Sundays.
Center Scott Mruczkowski will continue to start until Hardwick is ready to return.

PFT: Johnson To Seek Expedited Appeal
Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reports that Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson will immediately challenge his two-week suspension.
"We will be filing an appeal tomorrow," agent Peter Schaffer told PFT.com tonight. "It is our belief that the action did not warrant the discipline unilaterally imposed by the Chiefs. We'll be asking for an expeditied hearing, and hopefully we can work out a positive, mutual resolution with the Chiefs. If not, we'll defer to the arbitrator's decision. Larry's desire is to get back to his teammates as soon as he can."

"Attention All............Orlando Thomas is NOT dead!! Thanks for your concern! Please continue to pray for him and his family!", Reed announced on his Twitter page at around 7pm ET tonight.
The Vikings' official website made the announcement that Thomas had passed away, adding that they would honor their former safety with a moment of silence before their November 15 game against the Detroit Lions.

Chiefs Suspend Larry Johnson for Two Weeks

Johnson also allegedly used the word "faggot" under his breath to reporters in the Kansas City locker room on Monday morning.

Cribbs, Hester to Square Off on Sunday
Chicago Bears wide receiver Devin Hester and Cleveland Browns wide receiver Joshua Cribbs, two of the most prolific return men in the NFL the last 4+ seasons, will square off for the first time on Sunday.
"It's like a best-of-the-best," said Cribbs on Wednesday.
Combined, the two have returned 20 kicks, punts, and a missed field goal (Hester) for touchdowns since 2005.
Hester entered the NFL as a cornerback, made his bones as a return man, and has blossomed into a bonafide wide receiver in the NFL, catching 51 passes for a team-high 665 yards in 2008. This season, Hester is leading the Bears with 28 receptions and 373 yards, and has three receiving touchdowns.
"Everything about his [Hester's] play is inspirational to me," Cribbs said. "He's knocked down a lot of doors for the return game and special team players and is now becoming an outstanding offensive player. He's ... letting coaches know that special teams players can be core players."
Thus far, Cribbs hasn't been as incorporated into the Browns offense. He does get into the game in "Wildcat" packages, running ball 13 times for 102 yards and throwing an interception on one of his two pass attempts.
If there's one thing Cribbs does that Hester doesn't do, it's cover kicks. He's made over 70 special teams tackles during the last five seasons, so when you see Dave Zastudil trotting out onto the field--and chances are good you'll see that a lot--don't change the channel, as you'll miss two of the best special teams players of this generation doing their thing.

Buccaneers Name Josh Freeman the Starter
Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris has named first-round quarterback Josh Freeman the starter for the team's November 8 game against the Green Bay Packers.
Freeman made his NFL debut late in last Sunday's 35-7 loss to the New England Patriots at Wembley Stadium in London, England. Freeman completed 2-of-4 passes for 16 yards and was sacked twice.
"Josh Freeman will take over as starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers," Morris said on Wednesday. "No discredit to what Josh Johnson did for this football team. He's gone out there and gave us his best efforts. But the preparation, the timing, how we want to acclimate our young man into our system, into our organization, into our town, into our community, we think it's best coming off the bye. It's the most time to prepare.
"It's time to see Josh Freeman."
For his part, Freeman is looking forward to his opportunity.
"Obviously, it's something that's very exciting to me and it's something I've been working towards my entire career and it's not something I'm taking lightly," Freeman said. "I come out with a different swagger I guess because I'm the guy taking the majority of the snaps and I'm the guy who has to radiate that type of swagger so my teammates can catch onto it."

Redskins Ban Signs at FedEx Field
Dan Steinberg of the D.C. Sports Bog at the Washington Post has the details that yes, it's now against the rules to bring a sign, even like the one below, into FedEx Field.
At what point did the Redskins actually think this:
a.) Was a good idea, or
b.) That the media wouldn't uncover it and then have a field day

Cooley's Season Not Over
ESPN.com's Adam Schefter reports that Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley's ankle injury isn't as bad as initially feared, and the three-time Pro Bowler could return in four weeks.
Cooley reportedly broke a bone in his ankle, which prompted several outlets, including the league's own network, to report that Cooley would placed on season-ending injured reserve.
Then again, with the way the Redskins season is going, Cooley returning in a month might not make a lick of difference.

Titans Swap Punters
The Tennessee Titans have claimed punter Brett Kern off waivers from the Denver Broncos, ESPN.com's Adam Schefter reports.
To make room for Kern, the Titans gave Reggie Hodges the boot.
Kern was averaging 34.5 yards per punt (net), which was down over three years from what he was averaged during his rookie season in 2008. Denver waived Kern to sign 37-year old veteran Mitch Berger, who had worked out earlier on Monday.

Haynesworth Calls Out Teammates
Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth had some harsh words for his teammates following last night's 27-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
"Urgency, heart, 'want-to,' whatever. I don't know. We're lacking a lot of stuff right now.
"The fans are losing interest. The more games we play, the fewer fans come. It's getting bad," Haynesworth said.
"You can say but so much. You've got to actually 'want to.', Haynesworth said. "So once we get to that point - where we 'want to' do something - then we'll do something. But if we just keep going our separate ways, then we'll just keep getting slaughtered like we have."
Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com says Haynesworth isn't the same player he was in Tennessee now that he's got a $100M contract.
Personally, I saw a lot of effort from Haynesworth last night, but let's look at the numbers.
Last year, Haynesworth had 41 tackles, 8.5 quarterback sacks, 22 quarterback hits and 2 passes defended. Haynesworth is currently on pass for 48 tackles, 7 quarterback sacks, 15 quarterback hits, and 7 passes defended.
And the Redskins defense, which ranked 4th in 2008, currently ranks 5th.
So Haynesworth ain't the problem in D.C.

The San Francisco 49ers have placed right tackle Tony Pashos on injured reserve with a fractured scapula. To replace him on the 53-man roster, they have signed offensive tackle Chris Patrick off the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad.

Additionally, the 49ers released veteran linebacker Marques Harris and promoted Diyral Briggs off their practice squad.

Falcons Lose S William Moore for the Season
Atlanta Falcons second-round safety William Moore will miss the remainder of his rookie season, Tom Curran of Comcast New England reports.
Moore, Atlanta's second-round pick in 2009, missed most of training camp with a knee injury that lingered into the first month of the regular season. Moore appeared in two games, making two tackles during the Falcons' 21-14 win over the Chicago Bears last Sunday night. Moore injured his hamstring and was inactive in the team's loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.
Moore will have company in the Falcons' training room. Atlanta's first-round pick, defensive tackle Peria Jerry, was placed on IR after Week 1.

Buccaneers Make Roster Moves
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced a few roster moves on Tuesday.
Offensive linemen Marcus Johnson and Sean Mahan were released from the 53-man roster, with linebacker Eric Bakhtiari released from the team's practice squad. Offensive tackle James Lee was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster, and linebacker Lee Robinson was signed to the practice squad.
The Buccaneers now have 52 players on the active, and 7 on the practice squad, so expect at least two more transactions between now and next Monday, when they return from their bye week.

Falcons Sign RB Aaron Stecker
Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reports that the Atlanta Falcons will sign free agent running Aaron Stecker today.
Stecker, a nine-year veteran from Western Illinois who has spent his entire career in the NFC South, spending four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the last five seasons with the New Orleans Saints.
His top season came in 2007, when he made six starts, rushing for 448 yards and a team-high 5 touchdowns. During his 120-game career, Stecker has 1,511 yards and 8 touchdowns rushing, 161 receptions for 1,141 yards and 3 touchdowns as a receiver, averaged 23.2 yards on 167 kick returns, one he returned 98 yards for a touchdown.
A core member of the special teams units throughout his career, Stecker has 41 career tackles and was elected a special teams captain by the Saints in 2007 and 2008.
Stecker's stellar track record on those special teams units could be his real value to the Falcons. Last year's team set an NFL record by limiting opponents to 49 punt return yards on the season, but this year, the Falcons punt coverage units are allowing 12.6 yards per return. Last week, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Patrick Crayton returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown in Dallas' 37-21 win over Atlanta.

Larry Johnson Issues an Apology
Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson has issued the following statement through his agent, Peter Schaffer.
"First of all, I want to apologize to the fans of the Kansas City Chiefs and the rest of the NFL, Commissioner Goodell, the Chiefs organization, Coach Todd Haley, his staff, and my teammates for the words I used yesterday. I regret my actions. The words were used by me in frustration, and they were not appropriate. I did not intend to offend anyone, but that is no excuse for what I said.
"I also want to apologize to all the kids who view athletes as role models. I was not a good role model yesterday and hopefully I can become a better role model. We all make mistakes, and the challenge is to learn from them. I will do my best to learn from this one as I move toward becoming a better person, teammate, and member of the Kansas City chiefs team and community."
Meanwhile, the Chiefs would like to keep Johnson at arms' length, for now.
"The Kansas City Chiefs and the National Football League are continuing to investigate the alleged comments made by Larry Johnson. Until that review is complete, the Chiefs have instructed Larry to refrain from practicing with the Chiefs or participating in other team activities. A decision regarding Larry’s status will be made once the investigation has concluded."

Buccaneers Release Marcus Johnson
Hours after offensive lineman Marcus Johnson was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have released him, Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reports.
Florio notes that Johnson could file a grievance to ensure that he gets the balance of his $620,000 salary paid in full.
As a vested veteran, Johnson would be within his rights to seek that money, but players can only do that one time during their careers, so that will be a decision that Johnson and his agent will need to make.

Buccaneers G Marcus Johnson Charged With DUI
Reserve Tampa Bay Buccaneers guard/tackle Marcus Johnson has been charged with driving under the influence after being discovered asleep at the wheel of his car in the middle of a Tampa intersection at 4 o'clock this morning.
From the Tampa Tribune:
"The lieutenant 'noted clues of impairment consistent with consumption of alcoholic beverages and/or drugs,' a police report states. An investigator later smelled alcohol on Johnson's breath and saw Johnson had bloodshot, glassy eyes 'and a noticeable sway upon standing unsupported.'"
Originally a second-round pick (49th overall) by the Minnesota Vikings in 2005, Johnson signed as a free agent with the Oakland Raiders, who released him on August 31. The Buccaneers signed Johnson on September 2, and he's appeared in six of the team's seven games this season, primarily on special teams.

Redskins' Cooley to Miss Remainder of Season
Rick Maese of the Washington Post reported after last night's game that Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley could miss the remainder of the season after breaking a bone in his right ankle.

Cooley leads the Redskins in receptions (29), is second in receiving yards (332), and tied with Santana Moss for the team lead in touchdown receptions (2). These will the first games the two-time Pro Bowler (2007, 2008) will miss in his six-year NFL career.

PFT Wonders if DeMarcus Ware Will Go Soft
Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com wonders if because Ware received "too much money", he'll play differently now. Because, you know, other players have.
"Ware also said that a "handshake deal" was struck on Sunday, before the Cowboys' 37-21 win over the Falcons. Ware celebrated by getting two sacks.
The real question is, now that Ware has gotten paid, will the sacks keep coming?
No offense to Ware, but we've seen too many guys who get too much money and who end up playing all too different than before they struck it rich. Cowboys fans undoubtedly hope that Ware will be an exception to the "get paid, get soft" approach."
No offense to Florio, but if he's ever watched Ware play, or is at all familiar with Ware's character, not just as a football player but as a man, those three paragraphs never would've been written.
