Roddy White a Training Camp No-Show

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White was a no-show for the team's media session this afternoon. A noteworthy matter, but not a huge deal as players had until 5pm to report to training camp.

When 5pm ET came and went, though, it became an issue.

According to Adam Schefter, the Pro Bowl receiver also was a no-show at the Falcons' 6:30pm ET team meeting and isn't expected to be in training camp tomorrow when the Falcons hit the field for the first time.

In his four years with the Falcons, White has 230 receptions for 3,536 yards and 16 touchdowns. He's posted back-to-back 80+ reception/1,200+ yard seasons.

White is entering the final year of his contract, and despite triggering incentives that escalated his 2009 base salary to $2.28 million dollars, the fifth-year receiver is looking for a long-term commitment from the Falcons. Recent reports indicated that talks between White and the Falcons weren't going as well as both sides had hoped.

Perhaps White's statement today will spur things along.

Lions Sign 1st Round TE Brandon Pettigrew

The Detroit Lions have reached agreement on a five-year deal with first-round tight end Brandon Pettigrew.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Pettigrew (6-5, 263) was the most complete tight end in the 2009 draft. A four-year starter at Oklahoma State, Pettigrew caught 112 passes for 1,450 yards and 9 touchdowns during his 47-game career.

While Pettigrew is not a big down-field threat, Pettigrew is a big, sure-handed receiver who will make an immediate impact on third downs and in the red zone. He's also an outstanding blocker, finishing his blocks with the demeanor of an offensive lineman.

With Pettigrew signed, the Lions have wrapped up their entire 2009 draft class on time.

Ravens' Reed Has Contemplated Retirement

Edward Lee of the Baltimore Sun reports that Baltimore Ravens five-time Pro Bowl safety Ed Reed admits that he's thought of hanging up his cleats.
"Just to hit on Mason, I feel him," the five-time Pro Bowl free safety said after today's morning practice. "He had two surgeries and just with going through other things emotion-wise, it’s hard. I’ve been contemplating sitting out for the last two years and hanging up the cleats and stuff. When you start to think about those things, you start to put things in perspective. You start looking for other things to do outside of football."
If he were to retire today, I wondering if people would consider Ed Reed a Hall of Fame safety.

Below are career stats for a pair of safeties, each of whom has won a Defensive Player of the Year Award :

Chargers Agree to Terms With 1st Round LB Larry English

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the San Diego Chargers have agreed to terms on a five-year deal with first-round linebacker Larry English.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Josh Freeman signed a $36 million dollar deal earlier today. Quarterbacks are more highly paid than other positions, though, so a more pertinent number to look at was the $10.25 million in guarantees in Freeman's contract.

English was the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year in both 2007 and 2008, also earning the MAC Defensive Player of the Year award following his senior season. English racked up a school-record 32.5 quarterback sacks in his 50-game career, adding 212 tackles, including 57 for a loss.

At 6-2 and 255 pounds, English is a fast, aggressive pass-rusher who'll fit in well in the Chargers' defense.

Jaguars Sign 3rd Round DT Terrance Knighton

The Jacksonville Jaguars have announced that they have signed third-round defensive tackle Terrance Knighton.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Knighton was a three-year starter for Temple, where he was the team's Defensive Player of the Year in 2007 and 2008 and earned first-team All-MAC honors after his senior season.

In 46 games, Knighton made 184 tackles, including 26 for a loss, and had six quarterback sacks. At 6-3 and 321 pounds, Knighton adds considerable, and surprising athleticism, to the Jaguars' defensive line.

Undrafted free agent quarterback Todd Boeckman was released to make room for Knighton on the 80-man roster. Jaguars first-round offensive tackle Eugene Monroe and second-round offensive tackle Eben Britton remain unsigned.

Arron Sears Won't Report to Bucs' Camp

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were notified that third-year guard Arron Sears will not report to training camp, Rick Stroud of the St. Petersburg Times reports.

"Sears, who has not been with the team since spring, is dealing with what the club has termed a 'private matter.'

A second-round draft pick in 2007, Sears briefly attended the team's off-season workout program and the first voluntary minicamp under coach Raheem Morris. But teammates noticed Sears was more withdrawn than normal and at one point he became non-verbal, writing down answers to questions on paper. Sears abruptly left the Bucs after that."

Stroud's report mentions that Sears sustained a concussion in 2008, so for the sake of Sears' well-being, I hope fans and media aren't too quick to rush to judgment on this matter.

Brain injuries are no joke.

Panthers Reach Deal With 2nd Round CB Sherrod Martin

The Carolina Panthers have reached agreement on a four-year deal with second-round cornerback Sherrod Martin (Troy), Charles Chandler of the Charlotte Observer reports.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but as the 59th overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft, his deal should be worth around $3 million dollars, with $1.4 million in guarantees.

Martin (6-1, 198) is an outstanding athlete, with excellent speed, toughness, and ball skills. Martin primarily played free safety in college, but is expected to play cornerback in the NFL. His versatility did play a part in him being drafted in the second round.

In 46 career games, Martin made 288 tackles, broke up 23 passes and picked off 9 passes. Because Martin greyshirted as a freshmen, and redshirted in 2006 after having surgery on both shoulders, he'll turn 25 in October.

Harrison Comments on Vick-to-the-Patriots Talk

During an appearance on "The Dan Patrick Show", former New England Patriots safety and current NBC analyst Rodney Harrison said New England would be "a good fit" for free agent quarterback Michael Vick.

"Brady would be great for him,” Harrison said. “Brady would teach him how to be a pro.”

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick hasn't ruled out the possibility of signing Vick, though to be fair, he "hasn't ruled it in", either.

Sure, signing with the Patriots would be a good fit for Michael Vick. But would it be a good fit for the Patriots?

Look, as much as the Patriots were able to incorporate guys with checkered pasts into their locker room, several of the veteran leaders that allowed them to do that are no longer with the team. Besides, Brady having to teach a 29-year old man "how to be a pro" ought to be reason #1 for why the Patriots should take a pass on Vick.

Dolphins Reach Deal With 1st Round CB Vontae Davis

Edgar Thompson of the Palm Beach Post reports that the Miami Dolphins have reached agreement on a five-year deal with first-round cornerback Vontae Davis.

The Dolphins open training camp on Sunday.

Davis was a three-year starter at the University of Illinois, declaring for the NFL Draft after his junior season. A two-time, first-team All-Big Ten selection, Davis made 206 tackles and picked off 7 passes during his time in Champaign. The 5-11, 200-pound Davis has excellent speed and athleticism, and his toughness and physical play could allow him to eventually move to safety in the NFL.

While scouts felt Davis was talented enough to go in the Top 10, clashes with his college coach and questions about his work ethic and off-field decision-making led to him sliding to the bottom third of round one, much to the delight of Bill Parcells and Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano, who view Davis as a vital piece in the Dolphins' rebuilt secondary.

Texans Agree to Terms With 2nd Round DE Connor Barwin

The Houston Texans have signed second-round defensive end Connor Barwin (Cincinnati) to a four-year contract.

Barwin's rare athleticism made him one of the most intriguing prospects in the entire 2009 draft class. The 6-4, 256-pound Barwin caught 53 passes for 692 yards and six touchdowns during his first three seasons at the University of Cincinnati. The Bearcats moved him to defensive end before his senior season and he led the Big East with 11 quarterback sacks, earning first-team All-Big East honors.

While some teams viewed him as a tight end, and others as a defensive end, some scouts saw his speed, agility, and awareness translating well to outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. In Houston, Barwin will be used as a defensive end, with the Texans expecting him to help improve a pass-rush that got to opposing quarterbacks just 25 times in 2008.

Jim Johnson Memorial Service to be Held August 7

The Philadelphia Eagles announced that a private memorial service for defensive coordinator Jim Johnson will be held on Friday, August 7 at 2pm inside the West Club of Lincoln Financial Field.

The memorial service will be by invitation only and Eagles head coach Andy Reid has canceled both of the team's practices that were scheduled for that day.

Clayton adds that the Buccaneers report for training camp today, but Freeman went to the team's facility around midnight last night to sign the deal.

Freeman (6-6, 248) was a three-year starter at Kansas State, completing 59.1% of his passes for 8,078 yards and 44 touchdowns.

Redskins, Orakpo Agree to Terms

The Washington Redskins have reached agreement with first-round defensive end/linebacker Brian Orakpo on a five-year deal, the Washington Post reports.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Orakpo (6-3, 263) was a two-year starter at the University of Texas, though 2008 was easily a season for the ages. Though Orakpo was only credited with 42 tackles, 19 were for a loss and he added 11.5 quarterback sacks, earning first-team All-American honors. Orakpo also won the Nagurski Trophy (nation's top defensive player), the Lombardi Award (nation's top lineman), and was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.

Orakpo is penciled as the starter at strong-side linebacker, though he really could fill several roles on the Redskins' defense, particularly involving rushing the passer. Redskins defensive coordinator Greg Blache expressed concern that Orakpo wasn't present for the start of camp, but he's probably feeling a lot better knowing Orakpo hasn't missed much time.

Falcons Sign 1st Round DT Peria Jerry

The Atlanta Falcons announced that they have reached agreement on a five-year deal with first-round defensive tackle Peria Jerry.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but Jerry’s deal should include around $7 million in guarantees and have a maximum value of around $13 million dollars.

Jerry was chosen with the 24th overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft and is already penciled in as a starter in the middle of the Falcons’ defensive line. Known more for his athleticism than size, the 6-2, 299-pound Jerry is quick off the ball and can be disruptive force in opposing backfields.

A two-year starter at Ole Miss, Jerry made 107 tackles over the last two seasons, including 32 for a loss. He also notched 10.5 sacks during that time, earning second-team All-SEC honors as a junior and first-team All-SEC and first-team All-American honors after last season.

Jerry is expected to be on the field for the Falcons’ first 2009 training camp practice on Saturday morning.

Browns Sign 2nd Round WR Brian Robiskie

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports that the Cleveland Browns have reached agreement on a four-year deal with second-round wide receiver Brian Robiskie.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

As the son of NFL receivers coach Terry Robiskie, few wide receivers have been as prepared for life in the NFL as Brian Robiskie. A polished route-runner, with better speed than originally believed, and sure hands, Robiskie also has a strong work ethic and high football I.Q. that should make him a solid receiver for a long time.

Stuck behind NFL receivers Ted Ginn, Santonio Holmes, and Anthony Gonzalez, Robiskie was a two-year starter at Ohio State, leading the team in receiving in both seasons. In 51 career games, Robiskie had 127 receptions for 1,866 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Chosen 36th overall, Robiskie was not hindered by the Buckeyes shift to a more run-oriented offense during his senior season, which resulted in a sharp decrease in his stats.

PFT: $33M Guaranteed for Jason Smith

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reports that St. Louis Rams first-round offensive tackle Jason Smith received $33 million dollars guaranteed on a five-year contract that voids down to five years.

The contract is worth a maximum of $61 million dollars.

Rams Agree to Terms With 2nd Overall Pick Jason Smith

The St. Louis Rams have agreed to terms with second overall pick offensive tackle Jason Smith, Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but Smith is expected to sign the deal today and be on the field tomorrow.

A converted tight end, Smith is an outstanding athlete. He's agile, can get to the second-level with ease and has the size (6-5, 309) and long arms typical of elite left tackles at the NFL level. His coaches at Baylor praised his work ethic, intelligence, and his film showed how he plays the game with a mean streak.

Smith was a four-year starter at Baylor, beginning as a tight end (6 receptions, 70 yards and a touchdown) before moving to right tackle as a sophomore and left tackle in his final two years. Smith was named third-team All-American and first-team All-Big 12 after last season.

The Rams plan on Smith starting at right tackle, with Alex Barron moving over to the left side. Smith has Pro Bowl-caliber ability and it won't be long before he's protecting the blindside of Rams' quarterbacks.

Jaguars Sign Pair of Picks

The Jacksonville Jaguars have reached agreement on contracts with third-round cornerback Derek Cox (William & Mary) and seventh-round wide receiver Tiquan Underwood (Rutgers).

Financial terms were not disclosed, but both deals should be for four years.

Cox started 34 of 43 career games at William & Mary, earning All-Colonial Conference honors after his junior and senior seasons. The 6-1, 190-pound Cox ran a 4.4 in the 40 at the Combine, which helped him become the 73rd pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the second-highest a player from William & Mary has ever been drafted, behind only New Orleans Saints safety Darren Sharper, who was chosen 60th overall in 1997.

Underwood was a three-year starter at Rutgers, hauling in 132 passes for 1,831 yards and 16 touchdowns. Underwood's top season came as a junior in 2007, when he caught 65 balls for 1,100 yards and 7 touchdowns, earning first-team All-Big East honors.

39-Year Old Zgonina Re-Signs With Texas

The Houston Texans have re-signed 39-year old defensive tackle Jeff Zgnonina, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports.
"The Texans are re-signing defensive tackle Jeff Zgonina because Travis Johnson and Amobi Okoye are recovering from surgery.

Zgonina, 39, spent the last two seasons as a reserve with the Texans. His contract expired after last season."
Zgonina is entering his 17th season, and despite his advanced age, has missed just 5 games during the last 10 years.

The former 7th round pick (185th overall) by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1993 NFL Draft, Zgonina has also played for the Carolina Panthers (1995), Atlanta Falcons (1996), St. Louis Rams (1997, 1999-2002), Indianapolis Colts (1998), and Miami Dolphins (2003-06) before joining the Texans in 2007.

Giants Sign Pair of Second-Round Picks

The New York Giants have agreed to a four-year deals with second-round linebacker Clint Sintim (Virginia) and second-round offensive tackle Will Beatty (UCONN).

Sintim (6-3, 256) was a four-year starter for the Cavaliers and is coming off a 2008 season where he led all linebackers in Division I with 11 quarterback sacks, earning second-team All-ACC honors. During his 49-game career, Sintim made 249 tackles and had a staggering 27 quarterback sacks.

Beatty was a three-year starter for the Huskies, paving the way for Donald Brown, the Indianapolis Colts first-round running back who led the nation in rushing in 2008. Beatty has the size, feet, and agility of a prototypical left tackle.

With Beatty and Sintim signed, the Giants have wrapped up eight of their 9 picks in the 2009 NFL Draft. Still unsigned are first-round wide receiver Hakeem Nicks.

Lions Agree to Terms With 2nd Round S Louis Delmas

Tom Kowalski of MLive.com reports that the Detroit Lions have agreed to terms with second-round safety Louis Delmas.

"I haven't signed yet, but that's why I'm here,'' Delmas told Kowalski inside the Lions' facility.

Solid against the run and the pass, Delmas was regarded as the top safety in the 2009 draft class. A four-year starter at Western Michigan, Delmas earned first-team All-MAC honors after last season, after being second-team All-MAC as a junior. In 45 career games, Delmas was credited with 310 tackles, 18 pass break-ups and 12 interceptions.

Delmas should start immediately for the Lions, and has already taken on a leadership role on the defense.

Shiancoe's Zzzzzzs Could Lead to Twitter Ban

Minnesota Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe is making news after using Twitter during a team meeting today. Shiancoe "Tweeted" the following:

“Zzzzzz zzzzz zzz zzz (in meetings) lol..Introducing the staff.”

Of course, ProFootballTalk.com picked up on it, prompting Shiancoe to send out a follow-up "Tweet", specifying that he was an administrative meeting, not a team one.

As fun as it may be to read the real-time thoughts of your favorite players during the off-season, now that players are under the control of their teams, and are becoming increasingly aware that some in the media are reporting on their Tweets, the more reserved the medium will become.

Put another way, the more time a player spends on Twitter this summer, the more time he'll have to use Twitter this fall.

Chiefs Sign 4th Round CB Donald Washington

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced the signing of fourth-round cornerback Donald Washington (Ohio State).

Terms were not disclosed, but the deal should be for three-years and worth $1.57 million dollars, with a signing bonus of around $390,000.

Washington (6-0, 200) is a highly athletic player (45" vertical leap), but struggled with consistency and clashed with coaches, which played a part in him leaving Ohio State with a year of eligibility still remaining. In 37 games for the Buckeyes, Washington made 102 tackles and picked off two passes.

His signing leaves first-round defensive end Tyson Jackson as the team's lone unsigned pick.

$23.5M Guaranteed for Heyward-Bey

Player agent Alvin Keels, who represents sixth overall pick Andre Smith, cites an inside source in announcing via Twitter that Darrius Heyward-Bey, the seventh overall pick, received a five-year, $38.5 million dollar contract that contains $23.5 million guaranteed.

The $23.5 million dollars in guarantees represents a 20.5% increase over what last year's seventh overall pick (New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis) signed for.

So why would Keels mention this?

To illustrate that by seeking a 22.5% increase over what last year's sixth overall pick signed for, splitting the difference between the increases Mark Sanchez and Heyward-Bey receiver, or $25.7 million guaranteed, he's simply trying to get a fair market value deal for his client.

I'm not saying it's right for him to do this publicly--and yes, Twitter is a public forum--I'm just speculating on what has motivated him to comment on a deal signed by someone else's client.

Packers Agree to Terms With 1st Round LB Clay Matthews

Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that the Green Bay Packers have agreed to terms on a five-year contract with first-round linebacker Clay Matthews.

Silverstein reports that deal is worth $10 million dollars, with a maximum value of $13.25 million dollars.

Matthews (6-3, 240) is the son of former NFL linebacker Clay Matthews and nephew of Pro Football Hall of Fame offensive tackle Bruce Matthews. Matthews followed in his All-American father and uncle's footsteps, walking on at USC and being a key member of the team's special teams and was named the Trojans' Co-Special Teams Player of the Year three times.

For much of time at USC, Matthews toiled behind Keith Rivers, Rey Maualuga and Brian Cushing. When Rivers left for the NFL after 2007, Matthews stepped into a starting role, making 56 tackles and 4.5 quarterback sacks while playing both defensive end and outside linebacker. Matthews' size, athleticism and football smarts make him a versatile defender. For the Packers, he's expected to start immediately at outside linebacker in their new 3-4 scheme.

Packers first-round defensive lineman B.J. Raji is the team's lone unsigned pick.

Raiders Announce Heyward-Bey Signing

David White, who covers the Oakland Raiders beat for the San Francisco 49ers, announced on his Twitter page that the Raiders have officially signed first-round wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, who is on his way to Napa for training camp.

Future ESPN.com reporter Adam Schefter announced earlier today that Heyward-Bey had agreed to terms on a deal.

Oakland made Heyward-Bey the first wide receiver chosen in the draft, largely due to the former Maryland Terrapin ran a 4.3 time in the 40-yard dash.

A three-year starter, Heyward-Bey caught 138 passes for 2,089 yards and 13 touchdowns--all good enough to rank in the Top 5 in the school's receiving lists--during a 38-game career. Heyward-Bey's blazing speed makes him a threat whenever he touches the ball, and he could return kicks early in his NFL career.

Leon Washington a Training Camp No-Show

New York Jets veterans were scheduled to report to the Jets' Florham Park headquarters at 7am, but running back Leon Washington was a no-show, Dave Hutchinson of the Star-Ledger reports.

Washington is set to make $535,000 in the final year of his rookie contract. Multiple reports out of New York have indicated that the Jets and Alvin Keels, Washington's agent, are close to a deal, which led many to believe that Washington would report on-time for camp.

Apparently, that's not the case.

Lightning Cuts First Patriots Practice Short

Thunder and lightning caused the first practice of the New England Patriots 2009 training camp to end about 30 minutes early, David Lefort of the Boston Globe reports.
"The skies opened up over Gillette Stadium in Foxborough during the Patriots' first practice of training camp, but the team still continued to work on the field through the rain. However, once thunder was heard overhead, players rushed off the field and the team ended the session about a half hour earlier than expected."

Wade Phillips on Jim Johnson

Wade Phillips commented on passing of Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson:
"As a person, he was a great guy and he exemplified a really great defensive coordinator that had a change of personnel a lot of different times and kept having really good defensive teams. I admired him that way as a person and as a coach ... We didn't work together but obviously we played against each other a lot of times and saw each other a lot of times and talked some football."

Since it's 140 characters, no terms were reported.

Saints Sign a Pair of Picks

The New Orleans Saints have agreed to four-year deals with fourth-round safety Chip Vaughn (Wake Forest) and fifth-round punter Thomas Morstead (Southern Methodist), Mike Triplett of the Times-Picayune reports.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but it is noteworthy that they signed four-year deals. In recent years, the Saints have offered their second-day picks three-year deals.

Vaughn was a two-year starter for the Demon Deacons, leading them in tackles his junior season. Over his four-year career, Vaughn made 258 tackles, broke up 22 passes and intercepted three balls.

Morstead averaged 43.4 yards per punt during his three-year career with the Mustangs, earning second-team All-Conference USA honors in 2006 and first-team honors in 2007.

Ravens Sign 1st Round OT Michael Oher

The Baltimore Ravens announced tonight that they have agreed to terms on a five-year contract with first-round offensive tackle Michael Oher.

“We knew Michael wanted to be here,” Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said in a statement released by the team. “He said that many times. Ozzie wanted him to be here, and his agent (Jimmy Sexton) wanted him to be here too. The agent wanted to make sure he did the right thing by Michael, and we wanted that. A big congratulations to Pat (Moriarty, Ravens vice president of football operations) and Ozzie for working hard to get this done. I think we might be the first team to have all of our draft choices signed.”

Oher (6-4, 309) was a four-year starter for Mississippi, earning All-SEC honors three times (2nd team in 2006; 1st team in 2007-08) and was a first-team All-American selection and a finalist for the Outland Trophy following his senior season.

An outstanding athlete, Oher is expected to compete with Adam Terry for the Ravens' starting right tackle job during training camp.

The subject of Michael Lewis' "The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game", Oher's life story is presently being made into a movie.

Steelers Extend Heath Miller's Contract

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed tight end Heath Miller to a six-year contract extension, locking up the former first-round pick through the 2014 season.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Miller still had another year on his rookie contract, and if the CBA is not extended, wouldn't be a free agent until 2011. That the Steelers decided to do right by Miller is a sign of how much valuable they view him to be.

In 62 career games, including 61 starts, Miller had 168 receptions for 1,932 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also has 26 receptions for 348 yards in 7 career playoff games and has helped the Steelers win two of the last four Super Bowl trophies.

Chargers Sign 6th Round S Kevin Ellison

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that San Diego Chargers sixth-round safety Kevin Ellison has agreed to a four-year deal.

Last night, Acee reported that Ellison was holding out for a three-year deal, but as they always do, the team won out in negotiations with the second-day draft pick.

Ellison was a three-year starter in the USC secondary, earning first-team All-Pac 10 honors after his junior and senior years, despite missing a handful of games last season. In 38 career games, Ellison made 174 tackles and picked off 5 passes.

At 6-1, 227 pounds and not blessed with elite speed, Ellison projects to an in-the-box safety in the NFL.

Chargers first-round linebacker Larry English is the team's lone, healthy, unsigned draft pick. Seventh-round wide receiver Demetrius Byrd is still recovering from a pre-draft car accident, so the Chargers are in no rush to sign him.

Seahawks Sign 2nd Round Center Max Unger

Danny O'Neil of the Seattle Times reports that the Seattle Seahawks have agreed to terms on a four-year contract with second-round center Max Unger (Oregon).

O'Neil reports that Unger's deal contains $1.95 million in guarantees, which should place the total value of his contract at $3.7 million dollars.

A native of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Unger (6-4, 310) started 51 games during his four years at Oregon. Unger began his college career at left tackle before spending his final two seasons at center, where he twice earned first-team All-Pac 10 honors. In addition to not being flagged for a penalty during his final three seasons in Eugene, Unger was a three-time winner of Oregon’s Ed Moshofsky Award, given annually to the Ducks’ top offensive lineman.

While his NFL future should be at center, Unger primarily worked at left guard during the team’s off-season mini-camps and he is a candidate to start immediately at any of the ‘Hawks interior offensive line spots.

First-round linebacker Aaron Curry is now the team's lone unsigned draft choice.

Bills Sign 2nd Round CB Jairus Byrd

Chris Brown of BuffaloBills.com reports that the Buffalo Bills have signed second-round cornerback Jairus Byrd (Oregon), but have placed him on the team's "Active/Non-Football Injury" list.

To make room for Byrd, the Bills have waived wide receiver P.K. Sam.

Byrd (5-10, 208) is a highly-athletic, aggressive defensive back, with excellent hands and the ability to do some damage as a return man. He has the size and toughness to play safety at the NFL level.

The son of former Pro Bowl defensive back Gil Byrd, Jairus was a three-year starter for the Ducks, earning All-Pac 10 honors three times (H.M. twice, first-team in 2008). In 39 career games, Byrd made 204 tackles and picked off 17 balls.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but based on those signed around him, Byrd's four-year deal should be worth over $4.3 million dollars, with $2.7 million guaranteed.

The Bills now have one unsigned draft pick remaining, first-round defensive end Aaron Maybin (Penn State).

Bengals Sign 3rd Round DE Michael Johnson

The Cincinnati Bengals' Twitter page is reporting that third-round defensive end Michael Johnson has agreed to terms on a four-year contract.

The report comes via the Bengals official Twitter page, and they're citing agent Richard Kopelman, who represents the former Georgia Tech standout.

The 6-7, 266-pound Johnson was a pass-rush specialist for the Yellowjackets, not earning a starting role until his senior season. In his first season as a starter, Johnson posted 7 quarterback sacks and was named first-team All-ACC. In 49 career games, Johnson made 104 tackles (28 for a loss) and posted 17 quarterback sacks.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Colts Sign Three More Picks

Yesterday, the Colts signed third-round cornerback Jerraud Powers, and earlier today they reached agreement with seventh-round punter Pat McAfee.

Now Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star reports that the Indianapolis Colts have signed more three draft picks, agreeing to terms with fourth-round defensive tackle Terrance Taylor (Michigan), sixth-round quarterback Curtis Painter (Purdue), and seventh-round guard Jaimie Thomas (Maryland).

Taylor (6-0, 306) was a three-year starter for the Wolverines, making 114 tackles (17.5 for a loss) and registering 6 quarterback sacks. Taylor brings much-needed size to the interior of the Colts' defensive line.

Painter started over 40 games for the Boilermakers. The 6-3, 225-pound quarterback completed 60% of his passes for 11,163 yards (second-most yards, behind Drew Brees) and 67 touchdowns during his career.

Thomas (6-4, 322) was a three-year starter for the Terrapins, splitting time between both guard spots before locking down the left guard spot for his final two years. He was an Honorable Mention All-ACC selection after the 2008 season.

Bears Deny That Urlacher Called Cutler a "Kitty-Cat"

Chicago Bears spokesperson Scott Hagel issued a statement regarding the comments made by Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Bobby Wade on KFAN in Minneapolis, where the receiver said Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher called Bears quarterback Jay Cutler a "pussy".

"It's all nonsense,'' Hagel said. "I've talked to everybody [but Wade]. There is absolutely no truth to any of it.''

(H/T: Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times)

Rams Sign 2nd Round LB James Laurinaitis

Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the St. Louis Rams have agreed to terms with second-round linebacker James Laurinaitis on a four-year contract.

Laurinaitis becomes the sixth of the Rams' seven draft picks to agree to a contract, with offensive tackle Jason Smith, the 2nd overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft, still unsigned.

The 6-2, 244-pound Laurinaitis is expected to be the Rams' starting middle linebacker this season. A three-year starter for Ohio State, Laurinaitis won the Nagurski Award (nation's top defensive player) in 2006 and the Butkus Award in 2007. He was also named the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Year in 2006 and 2007 , was a first-team All-Big Ten selection from 2006 through 2008, and was a three-time AP All-American.

In 51 career games for the Buckeyes, Laurinaitis made 375 tackles (24.5 for a loss), registered 13.5 quarterback sacks and picked off 9 passes.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Colts Sign 7th Round Punter

Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star reports that the Indianapolis Colts have reached agreement on an contract with seventh-round punter Pat McAfee (West Virginia).

McAfee handled the kicking duties in each of his four years for the Mountaineers, finishing with the school's all-time record for games played (51) and points scored. During his final two seasons, he handled the team's punting duties, earning second-team All-Big East honors in each of those seasons.

After last season, McAfee was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award (top kicker) and a finalist for the Ray Guy Award (top punter).

Indianapolis opted not to re-sign Hunter Smith during the off-season, so McAfee has the inside track on the team's punting job.

Rams Sign Veteran DT Hollis Thomas

35-year old defensive tackle Hollis Thomas has decided to sign with the St. Louis Rams, Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

The 6-0, 335-pounder is entering his 14th season in the NFL after originally being signed as an undrafted free agent out of Northern Illinois by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1996.

Thomas spent 10 seasons in Philadelphia before being traded to the New Orleans Saints in 2006. The Saints released Thomas last summer after he tore a triceps muscle during training camp, but they re-signed him for the second half the season. Thomas had been on the market since his release a few days after the 2009 NFL Draft.

Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo was on the Eagles' defensive coaching staff from 1999-2006, so he has a lot of familiarity with what Thomas can bring to his defense, and vice versa. Thomas is very familiar with Spagnuolo's defensive system and, if healthy, could be the two-down, run-stuffing defensive tackle the Rams were lacking before this move.

NFC North Continues to be League's Most Entertaining Division

Even with Brett Favre opting to stay retired--for now--the NFC North took a big step this week towards being the NFL's most entertaining division this season.

Already we had Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver criticizing the Chicago Bears' collection of wide receivers, and now we've got Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Bobby Wade, a former Bear, telling Minnesota radio station KFAN that current Bears middle linebacker Brian Urlacher called Bears quarterback Jay Cutler a "pussy" when he and Urlacher were in Las Vegas this off-season.
"Jay Cutler is a good player,'' Wade said. "Obviously, it's a much different environment from going from Denver to play in Chicago. Chicago is a tough club to play for. What is so funny, I actually saw Brian Urlacher this past weekend in Las Vegas and we had a long conversation.

"I don't want to get him in trouble, but it wasn't what [the Bears] expected. Pretty much [Urlacher] said Jay Cutler was a [deleted] for the most part.''

Meanwhile, the Detroit Lions are quietly going about their business.

Bengals Agree to Terms With 2nd Round LB Rey Maualuga

Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network reports that the Cincinnati Bengals have agreed to terms on a four-year deal with second-round linebacker Rey Maualuga.

Maualuga, the 38th overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft, is the ninth of the Bengals' eleven draft picks to agree on a contract, with first-round offensive tackle Andre Smith and third-round defensive Michael Johnson still unsigned.

A three-year starter at USC, Maualuga made 272 tackles (22.5 for a loss), had 9 quarterbacks sacks and came down with 5 interceptions for the Trojans, who had four linebackers picked in this year's draft, including three in the first forty picks overall.

Maualuga possesses ideal size, strength, and instincts to play middle linebacker in the NFL.

Vikings Agree to Terms With 2nd Round OT Phil Loadholt

Chip Scoggins of the Star Tribune reports that the Minnesota Vikings have reached a deal with second-round offensive tackle Phil Loadholt (Oklahoma).

The deal is for four years, and while financial terms were not disclosed, Loadholt likely received around $1.7 million in guarantees.

Loadholt (6-8, 332) was a two-year starter for the Sooners after transferring in from Garden City Community College. The massive, long-armed tackle should be a mauler in the running game and should start immediately at right tackle for the Vikings.

Charges Against Randy Starks Dropped

Edgar Thompson of the Palm Beach Post reports that Miami-Dade County prosecutors have decided against filing felony charges against Miami Dolphins defensive end Randy Starks, who was arrested over Memorial Day weekend and charged with aggravated assault of a police officer.

Starks still faces a misdemeanor charge of culpable negligence, the report states.
"Starks, 25, was charged with aggravated battery for allegedly used his large truck to strike an officer who tried to stop the slow-moving vehicle on foot during a traffic jam in South Beach in the early morning hours of May 24."

Vikings Don't Appear Interested in Michael Vick

After being spurned by retired quarterback Brett Favre, many wondered if the Minnesota Vikings would have an interest in free agent quarterback Michael Vick.

Judd Zulgad of the Star Tribune reports that there doesn't appear to be an interest on the Vikings' end.

"I’m sure part of the thinking was that if the Vikings were willing to wait this long on Favre, this team must be desperate at quarterback. However, don’t expect to see Vick in a Vikings uniform.

A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed the organization doesn’t have interest in Vick. The Vikings will move ahead with Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels battling for the starting job in training camp and with John David Booty behind those two.

The Vikings’ lack of interest in Vick shouldn’t come as a shock considering team execs pretty much dismissed the subject at the NFL Scouting Combine last February in Indianapolis. And while Vick is now free to sign with an NFL team after commissioner Roger Goodell ruled on the matter this week, it’s difficult to believe the Vikings would want to take the public relations hit that is going to come with bringing Vick on board."

Maybe they shouldn't be so quick to dismiss it.

Chiefs Sign Pair of Picks

Adam Caplan of Scout.com reports that the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to terms with third-round defensive end Alex Magee and sixth-round wide receiver Quentin Lawrence.

Both deals are believed to be for three years, with Caplan reporting that Lawrence a signing bonus of around $90,000.

Magee was a defensive end and tackle at Purde, but projects to the "5" technique in the Chiefs' 3-4 defense. In 50 career games for the Boilermakers, Magee made 117 tackles, 14 for a loss, and added six quarterback sacks.

Lawrence was a four-year starter at McNeese State, catching 99 passes for 1,905 yards and 15 touchdowns during his college career. Lawrence ran a 4.40 time in the 40-yard dash at the Combine and could earn a roster spot as a return specialist.

The Chiefs now have two unsigned picks: First-round defensive end Tyson Jackson and fourth-round cornerback Donald Washington.

Cowboys Sign Pair of Draft Picks

Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News reports that the Dallas Cowboys have signed third-round linebacker Jason Williams (Western Illinois) and fourth-round quarterback Stephen McGee (Texas A&M) to four-year contracts.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

The lone unsigned pick is third-round offensive tackle Robert Brewster (Ball State), who will miss the 2009 season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle. Therefore, there's no rush to sign him before training camp opens later today.

Williams is an exceptional athlete. Started his college career as a defensive back, Williams moved into the front seven and immediately began making plays behind the line of scrimmage. Of the 289 tackles Williams made, 46.5 were for a loss. Williams also notched 15 career quarterback sacks and an FCS-record 14 forced fumbles, two of the reasons why he was named first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference after his junior and senior years.

The 6-1, 241-pound Williams is expected to play outside linebacker in the Cowboys' 3-4 scheme, adding some depth to the team's pass rush.

McGee was a three-year starter at Texas A&M, though he missed most of his senior season with shoulder issues. In 40 career games, McGee completed 59.5% of his passes for 5,475 yards and 28 touchdowns. With Tony Romo entrenched as the starter, McGee will have plenty of time to develop, but he has the talent to be a starter in the NFL somewhere down the road.

Bills Agree to Terms With 1st Round C Eric Wood

Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network reports that the Buffalo Bills have agreed to terms with first-round center Eric Wood (Louisville).

Terms were not disclosed.

Wood was a four-year starter for the Cardinals, setting the school-record for consecutive starts (49). Wood earned All-Big East honors three times, including first-team honors in 2007 and 2008. Along with second-round guard Andy Levitre (Oregon State), Wood could earn one of the Bills' starting guard spots this season, with free agent signee Geoff Hangartner playing center.

Wood's singing leaves first-round defensive end Aaron Maybin and second-round cornerback Jairus Byrd as the Bills' unsigned draft picks.

Raiders Apparently Sign Louis Murphy and Slade Norris

David White of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that when the Oakland Raiders rookies arrived for training camp, fourth-round wide receiver Louis Murphy (Florida) and linebacker Slade Norris (Oregon State) were among them, both having apparently signed their four-year deals.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Chosen 124th overall, Murphy was overshadowed by fellow Gator wide receivers Andre Caldwell and Percy Harvin, but got his chance to start in 2007. Over the last two seasons, Murphy had 77 receptions, 1,245 yards and 13 touchdowns. Murphy had a strong showing at the Radiers' OTAs and could make an immediate impact in their passing game.

Two picks after drafting Murphy, the Raiders selected Norris, a 6-3, 245-pound defensive end/linebacker from Oregon State. A gifted athlete (Norris began his college career at safety), he works well in space and could be a pass-rush presence from the outside linebacker spot in the Raiders' 4-3 scheme.

Braylon Edwards Shows Up to Training Camp

According to ProFootballTalk.com, Cleveland Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards has shown up for training camp, albeit a day late, and was placed on the team's "Active/NFI" list.

So I suppose there's nothing to see here.

Brad Childress' Statement on Brett Favre

The Minnesota Vikings have released the following statement from head coach Brad Childress regarding the team's pursuit of retired quarterback Brett Favre, who decided later today to remain retired.
"It was a rare and unique opportunity to consider adding not only a future Hall of Fame quarterback but one that is very familiar with our system and division. hat does not detract from the team that we have. As we have consistently communicated, we feel good about our team and they have put forth a tremendous effort this offseason preparing for the season ahead. With this behind us, we look forward to getting to Mankato and getting training camp underway."

RIP: Jim Johnson (1941-2009)

The Philadelphia Eagles have announced that after a brave battle with cancer, defensive coordinator Jim Johnson has passed away at the age of 68.

Johnson was one of the most innovative defensive minds in NFL history and a class act, as well. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and loved ones.

Braylon Edwards a Training Camp No-Show

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reports that Cleveland Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards was placed on the "Reserve/Did Not Report" list.
"This potential bombshell has been to date overlooked and largely unknown. As the source explained it, Edwards likely was asked to report with the rookies, due to some sort of an offseason injury."
So while everyone was worrying about Josh Cribbs and D'Qwell Jackson, it appears as though they should've paid a bit more attention to Edwards.

Any chance HBO can run a crew up to Berea, OH?

Favre Decides to Stay Retired

Judd Zulgad of the Star Tribune reports that quarterback Brett Favre has decided to stay retired.
“I just think it was a rare opportunity to explore a Hall of Fame quarterback who had background in the NFC and in this division,” Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress said. “He knows our system inside out … This doesn’t change anything about how I feel about our football team.”
According to Zulgad, Childress cited the "daily grind both mentally and physically" as the reason why Favre opted to stay retired.

Browns Sign 2nd Round WR Mohamed Massaquoi

Aaron Wilson of ProFootballTalk.com reports that the Cleveland Browns have signed second-round wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi (Georgia) to a four-year deal worth a maximum of $3.636 million dollars.

Wilson reports that the deal contains $1.863 million dollars in guarantees.

The 6-1, 201-pound Massaquoi started nearly all of his 51 career games for the Dawgs, hauling in 158 passes for 2,282 yards and 16 touchdowns. Massquoi was named first-team All-SEC by SEC coaches following his senior season.

Massaqoui's signing leaves the Browns' second-round wide receiver Brian Robiskie as the team's only unsigned pick from the 2009 Draft class.

Bengals Sign 3rd Round TE Chase Coffman

Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com reports that the Cincinnati Bengals have signed third-round tight end Chase Coffman to a four-year deal.

Coffman, the son of former Green Bay Packers tight end Paul Coffman, caught 247 passes for 2,659 yards and 30 touchdowns during his four-year career at the University of Missouri. Last season, with the tight end duties all to himself, Coffman caught 90 passes for 987 yards and 10 touchdowns, earning the John Mackey Award as the nation's top tight end.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Redskins Sign 3rd Round DE Jeremy Jarmon

Defensive end Jeremy Jarmon, who was chosen by the Washington Redskins in the 2009 NFL Supplemental Draft less than two weeks ago, announced on his Twitter page that he had signed with the Redskins.
"Just signed with the Redskins! Let's get going!!!"
Check back later for details on his contract.

Broncos' Marshall Not at Morning Practice

Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall was not in attendance during a light morning workout involving the Broncos' rookies, injured players, and quarterbacks, Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post reports.
"Coach Josh McDaniels will meet with reporters after practice and, hopefully, will explain Marshall’s absence from the workout."

Titans Sign 2nd Round DT Sen'Derrick Marks

Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network is reporting that the Tennessee Titans have signed second-round defensive tackle Sen'Derrick Marks (Auburn) to a four-year deal.

Marks was a three-year starter for the Tigers, earning second-team All-SEC after 2008. In 37 career games, Marks made 111 tackles, including 29. 5 in opposing backfields, and added 7.5 quarterback sacks.

The 62nd overall pick is expected to team along with Tony Brown and Jason Jones to fill the void left by Albert Haynesworth in the middle of the Titans' defensive line.

Colts Sign 3rd Round CB Jerraud Powers

The Indianapolis Colts got off the schneid by signing the first of their eight picks from the 2009 NFL Draft, signing third-round cornerback Jerraud Powers (Auburn) to an undisclosed contract.

While terms have not been disclosed, the Colts' front office routinely sign players chosen after the first round to four-year deals. Based on this history, and the picks around Powers, the deal is likely worth over $2.42 million dollars, with a signing bonus of around $675,000.

Powers was a two-year starter at Auburn, earning the Zeke Smith Award in 2007, given to the team's top defensive player. In 36 career games, the 5-9, 188-pound Powers made 136 tackles and intercepted six passes.

Cardinals Agree to Terms With 2nd Round LB Cody Brown

The Arizona Cardinals have announced that they have agreed to terms on a four-year contract with second-round linebacker Cody Brown (UCONN).

Brown (6-2, 244) was a three-year starter for the Huskies. During his 45-game career, Brown made 150 tackles, including 45.5 for a loss, and sacked the quarterback 24 times. A bit of 'tweener, Brown is an excellent in Arizona, who are planning to go with a more traditional 3-4 defense in 2009 and beyond.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but as the 63rd overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft, Brown's deal is likely worth around $2.7 million dollars, including over $1.25 million in guarantees.

2009 Could Be the "Summer of Gartrell" in San Diego

San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson hasn't touched the ball in a pre-season game since 2005, and the team placed the $6.621 million dollar franchise tag on backup running back Darren Sproles this off-season.

Given their importance to the team's playoff chances, Chargers fans can expect to see a lot of running backs Jacob Hester and Gartrell Johnson this summer.

Hester led the team in touches (49) last pre-season, but the Chargers already know what they've got in him. Meanwhile, Johnson is a powerful, between-the-tackles runner who get a veyr long look-see this summer.

They can’t wear me out,” Johnson said after yesterday's practice. “It’s a great opportunity to get out there and continue to grow.”

A poor time in the 40-yard dash lowered Johnson's draft stock, but there's no doubting his production in college. Johnson ran for 2,776 yards on 581 carries (4.8 ypc) and 24 touchdowns and he punctuated his college career by running for 285 yards against Fresno State in the New Mexico Bowl.

Redskins' Cerrato Says "No" On Vick

One of the teams that's often mentioned as having an interest in free agent quarterback Michael Vick is the Washington Redskins.

But according to Redskins' Executive Vice-President of Football Operations Vinny Cerrato, there's no interest on their end, reports Jason Reid of the Washington Post.

"For what it's worth again, I just got a text message from Vinny Cerrato about the latest Vick rumors/reports.

As I mentioned previously, Cerrato gave me a response of "no" when I asked about a possible Vick-Skins union last week. I put the same question to him today, and his response was the same -- 'no'"

Lions Sign 7th Round OT Lydon Murtha

The Detroit Lions have reached agreement with seventh-round offensive tackle Lydon Murtha, Tom Kowalski of MLive.com reports.

Murtha was one of the most highly-rated recruits coming out of high school, but injuries limited him to just 23 starts at the University of Nebraska.

The 6-7, 306-pounder put on a show at the Scouting Combine. That workout and his potential got him drafted, but he'll need to stay healthy and improve his technique to make it at the NFL level.

$50 Million Guaranteed for DeMarcus Ware?

Considering it's the Dallas Cowboys, and Jerry Jones is involved, J.I. Halsell wouldn't be surprised if DeMarcus Ware breaks the $50 million dollar guarantee mark.

Asomugha Comments on DeAngelo Hall, Michael Vick

The NFL's top cornerback, Oakland's Nnamdi Asomugha, shared his thoughts on a couple of former Virginia Tech Hokies with Comcast Sportsnet's "Chronicle Live" show on Monday night:

On DeAngelo Hall:
"A lot of confidence in him, but one of the things that he wasn't used to was the amount of man-to-man coverage that we played," Nnamdi said. "You know, and I would talk with him during games, I would talk with him after games, during practice, and he would be just so confused. He was like, 'Why are we playing this much man-to-man? I have never done this in all of my life.' So that was the thing that he had to get adjusted to.

You know, (DeAngelo is) a zone corner but can play man in spots and he does it great," Nnamdi added. "He does what he does very well. But when you have to do man the whole time, it can get frustrating to guys."
On Michael Vick:
"I usually think it's an easy thing to say," Nnamdi said. "Anytime there's a criminal or someone that's just gotten out of jail, everyone says, 'Oh, the Raiders are going to take him.'"
Oakland already has "Wildcat" possibilities, as Darren McFadden excelled in the offense at Arkansas. If Vick were amiable towards playing more receiver than quarterback, his speed would give the Raiders another dangerous offensive weapon, and that's something no team can have too much of.

Vick Reaction and NFL News and Notes

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell conditionally reinstated suspended free agent quarterback Michael Vick on Monday.

Vick will be allowed to sign with any NFL team (we'll assume Atlanta isn't interested), attend training camp, play in the team's final two preseason games, with Goodell ruling on a full reinstatement by Week Six of the regular season.

Just about every newspaper, whether their market has an NFL team or doesn't have an NFL team, is weighing in on the subject of whether or not Vick deserves another chance. There aren't enough hours in the day to link to every column, article, or blog post relating to Vick's NFL future, so here's just a sampling of what's out there:

ESPN.com's John Clayton thinks Goodell made the right call.

"If all goes well", Vick could play in Week 1, says NFL VP of Football Operations Ray Anderson.

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com thinks Tony Dungy's involvement assures that Vick will be signed, which is a totally solid point.

Should the Chicago Bears be interested in Vick?, asks Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times.

The Seattle Seahawks still aren't interested in Vick, note Danny O'Neil of the Seattle Times.

Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times handicaps wheere Vick could end up, with New England at the top of the list.

I'm still not buying the "Vick-to-the-Patriots" talk. Sure, they've brought in players with off-field issues in the past, but a good chunk of the veteran leadership that allowed those personnel decisions to happen is no longer in the locker room.

My opinion on where Vick ends up hasn't changed since February: I still think its down to Miami or Dallas.
