"Several people in the NFL told me not to rule out St. Louis as a possible destination for Vick. The Rams might have some ownership issues to deal with before actually signing him, but they have genuine interest. They’ve been doing their due diligence on Vick, and if the Commissioner does reinstate him, look for them to actively pursue him. It makes sense — a new coach with an older quarterback who hasn’t played well. Playing in a dome on carpet would highlight Vick’s speed and athleticism."Of course, any team could be a destination for Vick, but until NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell makes a ruling on Vick, and the Falcons release him, we won't know for sure who actually is interested in signing him.

NFP: Rams Interested in Michael Vick
Chad Brown on Extending NFL Schedule
"From a player's perspective, I would just say that at the end of the 16-game season, you're just done," Brown said. "Even if you do make it to the playoffs, you're just charging through based on your passion and love for the game, because your body has given up on you at that point. Now to add two more games to that?
"It's difficult to even explain but now that I'm out of the game, and I watch, I find it hard for me to believe I used to do that for 15 seasons.
"People compare the collisions to car crashes, but I don't think that even explains it because of the repetitive nature of them - from practices, games, training camps. The human body only has so many football games or plays in it. If you add two more regular-season, full-speed games, it's going to take a toll on guys."
Preliminary league plans for extending the regular season involve shortening the pre-season to two games, keeping the minimum number of games the players will be asked to play at 20. However, even the most casual of NFL fan knows that veterans play very little in the first and final pre-season game.
Would these veterans play at all in the two pre-season games? Are two pre-season games enough time for players and personnel executives to evaluate those players scratching and clawing for roster spots?
While a player like Seahawks running back Justin Forsett only needed two games to show he belonged on the 53-man roster last September, without a four-game pre-season, it's possible that quarterback Matt Cassel wouldn't have cracked
The league also unveiled a study about player injuries to support their cause, which Reiss rebuffs in his column. (And if anyone would know about how NFL teams manipulate the injury reports, it would be someone who covers the Patriots.)
No word on when the NFL owners will actually vote on this issue, but those NFL owners and fans that support an 18-game regular season should be careful about they wish for. While more meaningful football games sounds good in theory, a longer regular season will lead to more injuries, which in the short-term would diminish the product, and over the long-term, will reduce the length of what are already short careers.

Report: Rams Could Soon Be Sold
The Rams have an escape clause in their Edward Jones Dome lease that would allow them to relocate in a few years.
"The Rams' lease agreement with the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission stipulates that the Edward Jones Dome must be a "top-tier" facility that ranks among the top eight stadiums in terms of quality in the 32-team NFL by 2015.If a local ownership doesn't step up, the Rams could be the NFL's way back into the country's second-largest media market.
If that top-level status is not met, the Rams would be able to opt out of the stadium lease following the 2014 season."

Packers, Driver Talkin' Contract
"We have had some talks about Donald's contract," agent Jordan Woy said in an email to the Press-Gazette today.Driver has two years and $7.9 million dollars in base salary remaining on a 4-year, $22.7 million dollar extension he signed in 2007. He can earn a little over $5 million dollars in assorted workout and roster bonuses, as well as incentives.
During his 10-year career, all with Green Bay, Driver has 577 receptions, 7,989 yards and 43 touchdowns. He's been named to 3 Pro Bowls, including in back-to-back years in 2006 and 2007. He's topped 1,000 yards in five straight seasons.
RE: Winfield a No-Show at Vikings' Mini-Camp
Childress said that Winfield is attending the funeral of a friend's mother and will not participate in this weekend's mini-camp. He did not state whether or not Winfield faces disciplinary action for missing the workouts, but considering Winfield has a perfectly valid reason for not attending, and the team is attempting to reach a long-term agreement with him, it's highly unlikely that the team would seek to punish him at this time.

Tinoisamoa Chooses the Bears
Tinoisamoa, 27, was released earlier this month by the St. Louis Rams, who he had spent the first six years of his NFL career with and whom he led in tackles during the 2008 season. He was released primarily because his size, or more accurately his lack of size, didn't fit in the defensive scheme that new Rams' head coach Steve Spagnuolo was implementing.
By signing with Chicago, Tinoisamoa is reunited with Lovie Smith, his first defensive coordinator in the NFL.
After visiting with Chicago, Buffalo, and New England, Tinoisamoa was expected to choose between Chicago and Buffalo after New England went in another direction. Philadelphia was another team thought to be interested in Tinoisamoa, but no visit was ever made.

Rams Sign WR Sean Walker
As a senior, Walker (6-0, 180) led the Commodores in receptions (36) and yards (520), and even returned some kicks. During his career, Walker had 77 receptions, 1,103 yards and 9 touchdowns.
More impressive, however, is that he graduated from a school like Vanderbilt with dual degrees.
Redskins Release Jon Jansen
Jansen, 33, was a second round pick (37th overall) by the Redskins in the 1999 NFL Draft and had started 123 of 126 games during his 10 years with the team.
"This morning, Coach [Jim] Zorn, Vinny Cerrato and I met with Jon," owner Daniel M. Snyder said in a statement released by the team. "I've developed a close relationship with Jon and his family over the last 10 years and I have the utmost respect for him as a person and a player. He has been an important part of our organization for the past decade. We wish Jon and his family the very best."By releasing Jansen, the Redskins take a $1.7M cap increase over what he would've cost had they retained him.

Browns' Rookies, Agents Aren't Happy With Mangini
"It's a sophisticated form of hazing,'' said one league source. "I've never heard of anything like it."
Mangini's eighth annual football camp, for under-resourced children in grades 8-12, is voluntary for the rookies -- but all felt compelled to attend.
"It's voluntary, but's it's B.S. voluntary,'' said one source. "These players are fighting for starting jobs and playing time. What are they supposed to do, say 'no, I'm not going?''

Rod Hood Got More Than the Veteran Minimum
According to NFLPA record, Hood is set to earn a $1.4 million dollar base salary for 2009, more than twice the $620,000 minimum salary someone with 6 accrued seasons would receive.
49ers Sign TE Bear Pascoe
Pascoe was the 184th overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft. Last year's 184th overall pick signed for just over $97,000. The previous 184th pick signed for nearly $99,000. Based on what the eleventh picks of the 2007 and 2008 drafts signed for, Pascoe likely received a signing bonus of around $105,00.
Cowboys Sign Three Players
Chandler and Robinson both played their college ball at Iowa before entering the NFL with the San Diego Chargers. Robinson entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2005 and played in 16 games over two seasons for the Chargers, registering 14 tackles and 1.5 quarterback sacks. In 2007, Robinson played for the Miami Dolphins.
He did not play in the NFL in 2008.
Chandler was a fourth round pick (129th overall) by the Chargers in the 2007 NFL Draft. He's played in just one NFL game and spent the entire 2008 season on injured reserve. Jefferson, 26, spent 2007 and parts of 2008 on the Cowboys' practice squad before being released mid-season. He has not appeared in an NFL game.
Tramon Williams Signs One-Year Deal With Packers
Williams, 26, is an exclusive rights free agent who had refused to sign the one-year, $460K tender offered to him. Because he was tendered, he was not allowed to negotiate with an other team. He had been participating in the Packers' workouts after signing a waiver and taking out an insurance policy to guard against injury.
Terms of the one-year deal he signed today have not been disclosed. The former undrafted free agent from Louisiana Tech is eligible for restricted free agency after 2009.
UPDATE: The National Football Post is reporting that Williams will receive a base salary of $525,000, along with a signing bonus of $375,000. His 2009 cap number will be $900,000.

Laurence Maroney Returning Kicks During OTAs
"The Patriots spent some considerable time on special teams, and when it was time for kickoff returns, running back Laurence Maroney was back as a returner. Maroney had 28 kickoff returns for 783 yards (28.0 avg.) as a rookie, but hasn't been used in that role since. Other returners were Darius Butler, Terrence Wheatley, Julian Edelman and Terrence Nunn. Elsewhere on special teams, it was interesting to watch as the return team adjusted to the NFL's new rules, which prohibit wedges of three players or more."With Ellis Hobbs having moved on, Maroney certainly will be given opportunity to increase his role, something he's likely eager to do so that he can shake the "injury prone" label that's presently affixed to him.
Panthers Owner Makes Surprise Appearance
"Panthers owner Jerry Richardson made a surprise appearance at the team's summer school practice Thursday morning. It was the first time in 10 months that Richardson has attended a practice and was his most public appearance since undergoing a heart transplant on February 1....

RE: Broncos Cut RB J.J. Arrington
Mike Klis also reports that Arrington's deal included a knee-injury waiver against the signing bonus, meaning the Broncos won't be on the hook for the $3M.
Broncos Cut RB J.J. Arrington
Well, that was quick.
Arrington signed a four-year, $10 million dollar contract in March that contained a $3M signing bonus. Presumably, the entire $3M will accelerate onto this year's salary cap.
Why Twitter Is Hilarious
"MatthewHass008 one of my friends dropped his iPhone in the toilet yesterday... isn't that right @bjrth ?"
"MatthewHass008" is Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, while "bjrth" is Seahawks left tackle Walter Jones.
Tinoisamoa To Choose Between Bills and Bears
That leaves the Bills and Bears to wrangle over a player both teams want to plug in at strong-side linebacker. The Bears would seem to have an edge simply because Tinoisamoa played for Lovie Smith and Bob Babich as a rookie for the Rams in 2003. Tinoisamoa seemed at ease visiting with coaches and players alike during the OTA at Halas Hall last Wednesday."One thing's for sure: For a player who was born in San Diego, played his college ball in Hawaii and spent six years playing half of his games at the Edwards Jones Dome, signing with either Buffalo or Chicago will be a major change of pace, weather-wise.
Chiefs Waive DE Brian Johnston
Johnston (6-4, 269) appeared in nine games in 2008 after being selected in the 7th round (210th overall) out of Gardner-Webb. Johnston didn't appear to be a fit with the Chiefs switching to a 3-4 defense.
Bill Polian Defends Jim Caldwell
"People want to knock his record at Wake, but he got that school to its first bowl game in a long time and we all know it wasn't a football school," Polian said. "The bottom line is that Tony supported him and hired him and, to me, that's a great endorsement. Peyton and the players on offense have complete confidence in Jim and his offensive philosophy. I mean, I don't know this now, but we could actually get better on offense."The Czar accurately notes that improving on offense won't be much of a stretch for the Colts, who ranked 15th in 2008 and were 31st in rushing (hence the selection of Donald Brown with the 27th pick).
Personally, I think the Colts are too talented to not win 10-12 games, but following in the footsteps of a Tony Dungy is sure to be a daunting task. By all accounts, Caldwell is well-equipped to handle the challenge.
