Seahawks, Hill Agree to Six-Year Deal

The Seattle Seahawks have signed linebacker Leroy Hill to a six-year, $38.5 million dollar contract that includes $15.5 million dollar in guarantees.

As reported earlier, the Seahawks removed the franchise tag, in part, to help expedite negotiations on a long-term contract. Seahawks head coach Jim Mora commented during an interview on 950 KJR-AM in Seattle that he wouldn't be surprised if a long-term deal was reached, perhaps before the start of mini-camp on Friday. An hour later, Ian Furness of KJR reported that Hill was optimistic about reaching a deal with the 'Hawks before Friday, as well.

In his four NFL seasons, all with the Seahawks, Hill has started 50 of 56 games, made 329 tackles, registered 13.5 sacks and forced 7 fumbles.

With this signing, and the upcoming deal for Aaron Curry, the Seahawks starting linebackers, which also includes three-time Pro Bowler Lofa Tatupu, will be signed through the 2014 season. (Tatupu is signed through 2015.)

Million Man March at Redskins Park This Weekend

When the Washington Redskins hold their rookie mini-camp at Redskins Park this weekend, there will be a small army of football players in attendance. From the "Redskins Insider" blog at the Washington Post:
"The Redskins, I am told, may have 113 players at their three-day mini-camp that begins today at Redskins Park. That's quite a crowd and a number has some coaches scratching their heads. All veterans will attend (although some who are recovering from injuries will not participate), plus the rookies and a bunch of non-roster invitees."
Jason La Canfora notes that coaches are concerned about "primo players" being on the same field as guys who'll soon be working for UPS. Two completely trivial things about that line:

1.) Are players who can't make the Redskins so bad that they can't work for FedEx, the Redskins' main corporate sponsor?

2.) A lot of the guys trying out presumably played and attended college, which probably doesn't limit their employment options.

Patriots Acquire TE Alex Smith

The New England Patriots have acquired tight end Alex Smith from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for an undisclosed 2010 draft choice.

Smith is entering his 5th season after being selected with the 71st pick of the 2005 NFL Draft, 13 picks ahead cornerback Ellis Hobbs, whom New England dealt to Philadelphia on Sunday. During his four years in Tampa Bay, Smith caught 129 passes for 1,252 yards and 11 touchdowns.

With the off-season acquisition of Kellen Winslow, as well as the presence of Jerramy Stevens and John Gilmore, Smith was expendable. He brings with him to New England a base salary of $1.55 million dollars, and is in the final year of his rookie contract.

Lawrence Phillips Is Doing Great

A San Diego judge ruled that former NFL running back Lawrence Phillips must stand trial for eight felony charges for two alleged assaults.

Phillips, 33, faced 25 years in prison, if convicted.

Bengals Kicker Signs Franchise Tender

Cincinnati Bengals has signed his one-year franchise tender, Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

“We’re happy Shayne is signed in advance of our offseason camps, and this does not preclude our continuing to talk to Shayne and his representatives about reaching a longer-term agreement,” Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said.

In six seasons with the Bengals, Graham is 154-for-176 on field goal attempts, an 87.5% success rate. His franchise tender is worth $2.483 million dollars for 2009.

Cap'n Smoot Fires Back at Rookie

Washington Redskins third round cornerback Kevin Barnes said new teammate Fred Smoot was "getting a little bit older", and well, Cap'n Smoot has responded.
"They come in like that until they go to three days of [minicamp] and [then] they humble," Smoot said. "It don't bother me. I'm going to take him through some things. I haven't seen the guy. I don't even know his name and I love football so that tells you [something]. I know who's going to get drafted where. I didn't know the kid."
Did the Love Boat have a plank?

KJR: Hill "Optimistic" About a Deal With Seattle

KJR-AM's Ian Furness is reporting that Leroy Hill couldn't confirm anything, but he expects to get something done with Seattle and could be on a plane and at the team's mini-camp, which gets underway tomorrow.

Seattle had offered Hill a six-year, $36 million earlier this year, which Hill declined, prompting the Seahawks to place the $8.304 million dollar franchise tag on him. Seattle removed that tag after using the 4th pick of the 2009 NFL Draft on Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry.

While some predicted that would expedite the departure of Hill for greener pastures, perhaps to Tampa Bay, Washington, etc...it now appears as though Hill will team with Lofa Tatupu and Aaron Curry to form one talented group of starting linebackers.

Mora: Seahawks, Leroy Hill Reportedly Close to a Deal

During an interview with KJR-AM's Mitch Levy of the "Mitch in the Morning Show", Seattle Seahawks head coach Jim Mora hinted that the team may reach a deal with free agent linebacker Leroy Hill, perhaps within the next day or two.

The Seahawks will hold a mini-camp from tomorrow through Sunday.

Mora also mentioned that newly signed cornerback Ken Lucas is the starting right cornerback, a decision that didn't sit well with incumbent starting cornerback Josh Wilson. Rookie center Max Unger will work at left guard during mini-camp, behind Mansfield Wrotto, who his filling in for Mike Wahle, who is recovering from shoulder surgery.

Eagles Don't Issue #20

The Philadelphia Daily News reports that the Philadelphia Eagles will have 85 players on the field on Friday, but none will be wearing #20.
"The number is synonymous with Brian Dawkins, and always will be in the minds and hearts of Eagles fans. Pity the poor young defensive back who would have been saddled with carrying on that tradition."
The Daily News correctly notes that the NFL encourages teams to not retire jersey numbers, and like most NFL teams, the Eagles only have one retired jersey number: Reggie White's #92.

Meanwhile, in Seattle, seventh-round safety Courtney Greene is wearing #37, the number worn by future Ring of Honor member Shaun Alexander, who last played for the Seahawks in 2007. The #12 is the only number the Seahawks have retired, but the team will not issue #80 (Steve Largent), and is reluctant to issue #96 (Cortez Kennedy) and #45 (Kenny Easley).

Peter King's Pre-6AM Tweets

SI_PeterKingNoted on profootballtalk that Matt Russell got hired by Denver as director of college scouting. Good story, Florio. A great hire ...
Lofty hire.

SI_PeterKingRussell's the guy who 'found' Matt Cassel as USC when a lot of scouts wouldn't look at a backup QB who never played. Matt saw something ...
140 characters don't go nearly as far they used to, so...
SI_PeterKingThen Scott Pioli looked at Cassel, liked what he saw, and the rest is history. Russell lives in Boulder. It's a good sign for Broncos.
Good sign for the Broncos, but will adding Matt Russell be enough to save McDaniels' job if the Broncos win three games while Jay Cutler throws for 3,500 yards and helps the Bears contend for the NFC North title?

Changes Coming to the Patriots' Scouting Department

Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe reports that there will be some changes to the New England Patriots' scouting department.
"Area scouts Jim Nagy and Marvin Allen have left the Patriots in recent weeks, according to league sources.

More changes with members of the Patriots' personnel staff are expected in the coming weeks."
With the departure of Scott Pioli to Kansas City, where Nagy has already resurfaced, and the addition of Nick Caserio to the front office, changes like this are common.

Miklasz: Rams Could Have Done More

Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch isn't complaining, nor is he being critical when he writes that the St. Louis Rams could have done more in the 2009 NFL Draft.
"They could have at least tried a more creative, long-range, forward-thinking approach by trying to stock up with as many draft picks as possible."
Miklasz then goes ahead and makes a pre-draft point I was making in regards to the Rams' need for a long-term solution at quarterback.
"For instance, consider this hypothetical: Can you imagine the horror of a Seattle or San Francisco, armed with two No. 1 picks, moving ahead of the Rams in 2010 to snatch a potential franchise quarterback such as Oklahoma's Sam Bradford?"
I received a lot of e-mail about giving USC quarterback Mark Sanchez to the Rams with the 2nd overall pick in my seven-round mock draft. Most of it was positive, or at least found it to be an intriguing selection, but I'm happy to see someone in the St. Louis media address the Rams' long-term void at quarterback.

Lions Release TE Michael Gaines

After using the second of their first-round picks on Oklahoma State tight end Brandon Pettigrew, the Detroit Lions released veteran tight end Michael Gaines on Wednesday.

Gaines, 29, had signed a four-year, $10 million dollar contract last season and was set to earn $1.6 million this season, $2.1 million dollars in 2010 and $2 million in 2011. He appeared in all 16 games, making 6 starts, and posted 23 receptions, 260 yards and 1 touchdown during his one season with the Lions.

Releasing Gaines provides little relief, clearing approximately $400,000 in cap room.

Jaws Thinks Eagles Could Be Better

After acquiring a Pro Bowl-caliber left tackle, and a solid right tackle who played under the franchise tag in 2008, and getting one each of the top wide receivers and running backs available in the draft, former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and current ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski thinks the Eagles might be better this year than they were in 2008.

“We tend to forget they went to the NFC Championship Game last year," Jaworski said. "I look at this team right now ... it’s a better team than the one that walked off the field after losing to Arizona.”

Lance Briggs Isn't the First Guy To Cut Himself With a Grooming Mechanism

Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs was seen in photos with a bandaged hand, the result of him accidentally cutting himself with a straight-edge razor. Briggs wanted to set the record straight, and offer some perspective, on Monday.
"I'm definitely not going to miss the season," Briggs said. "I'm not the first person to cut themselves with a grooming mechanism."
It's impossible to follow a quote like that.

Sproles Signs Franchise Tender

ESPN.com's John Clayton reports that San Diego Chargers running back Darren Sproles has signed his one-year tender.

Sproles' tender is worth $6.621 million dollars. Both sides plan on continuing negotiations towards a long-term contract, which they have until the middle of July to do.

During his four-year career, which includes zero starts, Sproles has 5,425 all-purpose yards and 11 touchdowns. Sproles has never had more than 90 touches from scrimmage in a single-season, but is an electrifying return man and is the ideal change-of-pace/third-down back to complement LaDainian Tomlinson.

Cardinals Release James, LaBoy and Hood

Edgerrin James, the NFL's active leader in carries and yards, got his wish on Tuesday after the Arizona Cardinals granted him his unconditional release.

James started 39 of 45 games during his three seasons with the Cardinals, carrying the ball 794 times for 2,895 yards and 16 touchdowns. During his 10-year career, James has 2982 attempts for 12,121 yards and 80 touchdowns.

A solid all-around back, James also has 430 career receptions for 3,345 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Also released on Tuesday was veteran cornerback Rod Hood and defensive end Travis LaBoy. Combined, the moves free up around $5.5 million dollars in cap space. Perhaps more importantly, releasing these three veterans saves the Cardinals' $9.5 million dollars in base salaries and roster bonuses.

With the Bidwells, every penny counts.

Michael Vick Receives Contract Offer

The Associated Press reports that Michael Vick has received a contract offer from the Albany Firebirds of the arenafootball2 league.

Under the terms of the deal, Vick would receive $200 per week and a $50 bonus for a win. Vick would also be required to donate $100K to the locale human society, which probably would jive with Vick's bankruptcy plan.

Bengals Release Pair of Punters

Two days after using a fifth round pick on punter Kevin Huber, the Cincinnati Bengals have released veteran punters Ryan Plackemeier and Kyle Larson.

Larson had four years remaining on a $7.6 million dollar contract he signed in 2008. He'll count for $1.12 million in "dead money" on this year's cap. Plackemeier was signed for the veteran minimum.

Saints Release Brian Young

The New Orleans Saints released veteran defensive tackle Brian Young.

"This was a very difficult decision to make," Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis said in a statement. "Brian is one of the hardest working individuals I have ever met and I have as much respect for him as any player I have ever been associated with. We will miss his passion for the game. He has been a key contributor to our defense for a number of years and has also brought a lot to our organization as a high character individual. He has not received as much recognition and credit as he deserves for what he has brought to our team and this community. He will always be welcome in our building."

Mike Tripplett of The Times-Picayune notes that Young had been unable to recover from a major injury to his left knee, which Young concedes makes him a longshot to return to the game.

Based on my amateur accounting, Young's release likely saves about $1M in cap space for the Saints.

Steelers Release Larry Foote

The Pittsburgh Steelers will release veteran inside linebacker Larry Foote, Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reports.

Foote, 28, was a 4th round pick by Pittsburgh in 2002 and had spent his entire seven-year career with the Steelers. Foote had started 80 consecutive regular seasons for the Steelers, earning a pair of Super Bowl rings along the way. In 110 career games, Foote made 431 tackles, 14.5 sacks and intercepted three passes.

When the Steelers make the move official, they will save $2.885 million dollars in salary cap space. One possible landing spot for Foote is the Detroit Lions. Foote is a Detroit native and a Michigan alum, and new Lions head coach Jim Schwartz would love to add a veteran with multiple Super Bowls to his front seven.

Signing Undrafted Free Agents Highlight a Busy NFL Monday

He's a great college football coach, but I'm more than a little tired of Mike Leach chastising NFL head coaches and personnel execs for what he feels is the mistreatment of his players.

In the last few days, Leach has mocked the Dallas Cowboys' selection of Texas A&M quarterback Stephen McGee (while Graham Harrell went undrafted) and blamed the Cleveland Browns for Michael Crabtree's slide to the 10th spot in the first round.

While those in Lubbock may view Leach's tired tirades as a sign of how loyal he is to his players, and to a certain degree it is, the bottom line is Crabtree going in the Top 5, and Harrell being drafted in the middle rounds, would've been an excellent tool Leach could use when he's in a recruit's living room.

Leach can criticize NFL teams all he wants, but Harrell didn't show the ability to make all the throws during post-season workouts. McGee did. And while Michael Crabtree arguably should've gone higher than 10th, the Browns weren't the only team who were rumored to be concerned with Crabtree's off-field persona.

Maybe Eric Mangini will ask Harrell to convey that message back to Leach during the Browns' rookie mini-camp this weekend.

Lions' Stafford to Appear on Letterman

Detroit Lions first-round quarterback Matthew Stafford will appear on "The Late Show with David Letterman" tonight, delivering the Top 10 "Thoughts That Went Through Matthew Stafford's Mind on Draft Day".

My favorite: "Why does Jessica Simpson keep calling me?"

Dolphins Cut John Beck

With Chad Pennington starting, 2008 and 2009 second-round picks Chad Henne and Pat White potentially battling out for the role of future starter, the Miami Dolphins parted ways with third-year quarterback John Beck on Monday.

Beck, 27, was the 40th overall pick of the 2007 NFL Draft. He appeared in just 5 games (including 4 starts) for the Dolphins, all in their 1-15 2007 regular season, completing 56.1% of his passes for 559 yards, 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions.

By releasing Beck, the Dolphins save a little bit of space on the salary cap. (approximately $44,000)

Seahawks Expected to Sign Ken Lucas and Justin Griffith

Veteran cornerback Ken Lucas and fullback Justin Griffith are expected to sign with the Seattle Seahawks this afternoon, Danny O'Neil of the Seattle Times reports.

Griffith, 28, has a long track record with Seahawks offensive coordinator Greg Knapp and his signing was expected after fullback Leonard Weaver departed via free agency. Griffith is recovering from a knee injury, so it's unclear what his role in Seattle will be. Second-year fullback Owen Schmitt is currently penciled in as the starter.

Lucas, 30, was a second-round draft pick by Seattle in 2001 (40th overall) and has spent the last four seasons with the Carolina Panthers, who he signed with in 2005. At 6-feet and 205 pounds, Lucas is bigger than most of the cornerback currently on the Seahawks' roster, which would allow them to better match-up against tall NFC West receivers like Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin and San Francisco 49ers rookie Michael Crabtree.

Lucas also reunites with Seahawks secondary coach Tim Lewis, who had filled that role with the Panthers the last few seasons.

Chargers Linebacker Cited for Misdemeanor Battery

San Diego Chargers linebacker Shaun Phillips was cited for misdemeanor battery after a security guard at the Ivy Hotel in San Diego claimed Phillips punched him in the face.

The incident occurred at 1am on Saturday morning and is the second time this month that Phillips has been involved in a battery case.

The Chargers have not yet issued a statement regarding these incidents.

While one could connect the dots between Phillips' off-field incidents and the selection of Northern Illinois outside linebacker Larry English with the 16th pick in last Saturday's draft, the two events are most likely unrelated.

Bo Scaife to Sign Franchise Tender

Tennessee Titans franchise tight end Bo Scaife is planning on signing his one-year tender on Monday, Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean is reporting.

The tender is worth $4.46 million dollars for 2009, and is fully guaranteed. Tennessee may have given Scaife the impetus to sign the tender after using a third-round draft choice (89th overall) on South Carolina tight end Jared Cook, the second-highest rated tight end in the draft.

After the Seattle Seahawks yanked the $8.304 million dollar tender off linebacker Leroy Hill, Scaife isn't taking any chances this late in free agency.

ESPN: Bengals To Trade or Release Levi Jones

Cincinnati Bengals left tackle Levi Jones has been informed that the team intends to trade or release him, reports ESPN.com's James Walker.

Cincinnati used the 6th pick of the 2009 NFL Draft on Alabama offensive tackle Andre Smith.

Jones has four years and $19.1 million dollars remaining on his contract, and trading or releasing Jones would cost the Bengals $200K more than Jones' $5.266M cap number for 2009.

Bengals Release Chris Perry

The Cincinnati Bengals announced on Monday that they've released veteran running back Chris Perry.

Perry, 27, was the Bengals' first-round pick in 2004 whose career had been derailed by injuries. Perry missed 26 of 48 games over the first four years of his NFL career, including the entire 2007 season. During his career, Perry carried the ball 177 times for 606 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and added 83 receptions for 474 yards and another pair of touchdowns out of the backfield.

Perry's top season in a Bengals uniform was 2005, where had 607 yards from scrimmage and 51 receptions.

Also released on Monday were running back Gary Russell, safety Mike Doss, tight end Nate Lawrie, and linebacker Eric Henderson.

Jaguars.com
has the complete list.

The Minnesota Vikings have signed ten undrafted free agents, including Boise State running back Ian Johnson.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune has the full list, which they've compiled from reports from sources like Scout.com.

2009 NFL Draft Recap

Draft grades are silly and a complete waste of time, so instead of throwing out false grades, let's just say that every team's grade is an "Incomplete", but several teams clearly helped themselves in tangible, indisputable ways this weekend.

I listed three of those teams, and what they accompished, last night.

Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe wraps up the New England Patriots' "Jimmy Johnson-esque" 2009 NFL Draft.

Cornerback Ellis Hobbs was surprised to learn that he'd been traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, but he understands this is a business.

Patriots third round wide receiver Brandon Tate is happy to be moving forward. Another Patriots third round pick, outside linebacker Tyrone McKenzie, projects to inside linebacker in the NFL.

Buffalo Bills fourth round tight end Shawn Nelson may be the pass-catching tight end the Bills have been seeking for years.

Several western New York prospects were drafted or signed as undrafted free agents.

Ethan Skolnick of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel looks at what this weekend's draft says about the Miami Dolphins.

Former Ohio State wide receivers Ted Ginn and Brian Hartline will be reunited in Miami.

The New York Jets have spoken to Plaxico Burress' agent, but nothing appears imminent.

Gary Myers of the New York Daily News has playoff expectations for the Jets this season.

Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum shook up day two of the draft by trading up for Iowa running back Shonn Greene.

Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Inquirer thinks as many as seven Cincinnati Bengals draft picks could make an immediate impact, though one is open for scrutiny.

The Bengals chose punter Kevin Huber, a local product and longtime fan, in the fifth round.

Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer writes that the Cleveland Browns' draft should speed up the rebuilding process.

Baltimore Ravens first round offensive tackle Michael Oher hopes to start as a rookie.

The Ravens failed to get a wide receiver, writes David Steele of the Baltimore Sun.

Pittsburgh Steelers defensive line coach John Mitchell says first-round defensive end Ziggy Hood "is light years from playing right now".

Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette profiles Steelers' third round picks Mike Wallace and Keenan Lewis.

John McClain of the Houston Chronicles wraps up the Houston Texans' 2009 draft, which didn't address the running back position until after the draft was over.

Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Gene Smith went small-school on day two of the 2009 NFL Draft, but did take a diminutive skill-position player from the Pac-10 in the fourth round.

The Tennessee Titans went offense on the second day of the draft.

Indianapolis Colts president Bill Polian addressed all of the team's goals over the weekend.

The Denver Broncos draft class oozes character, writes Mike Klis of the Denver Post.

Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels expressed his confidence in his quarterbacks by waiting for the sixth round to draft a quarterback.

Kansas City Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli isn't done reshaping the Chiefs' roster.

Jason Whitlock thought former Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards' performance on ESPN this weekend was Palin-esque.

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune recaps the San Diego Chargers' draft, which included some curious picks.

Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable isn't fazed by the criticism of the team's draft picks, which Tim Kawakami of the Mercury News thinks shreds Cable's credibility.

(Honestly, though, does Kawakami expect Cable to fire himself by criticizing picks that he, and his staff, has an opportunity to coach up and prove everyone wrong?)

San Jose State had as many players selected this weekend as Cal did.

Dallas Cowboys fourth round quarterback Stephen McGee reminded Jerry Jones of Tony Romo.

Cowboys fans should be a little nervous following this year's draft, writes Kevin Sherrington.

Because of his size, New York Giants third round wide receiver Ramses Barden can expect comparisons to Plaxico Burress.

Giants general manager Jerry Reese defended his selection of quarterback Rhett Bomar in the fifth round.

After the draft, Reese & Co. began signing undrafted free agents, including Virginia defensive end Alex Field.

A surrogate family helped Philadelphia Eagles first round pick Jeremy Maclin at a critical time in his life.

Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News isn't surprised the Eagles had an offense-heavy draft.

Ellis Hobbs may be Sheldon Brown's ticket out of Philadelphia. (Yeah, tell that to Lito Sheppard.)

Washington Redskins third round cornerback Kevin Barnes was speechless when he got the call from the Redskins.

Redskins fifth round linebacker Cody Glenn is still new to the position.

Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo focused on the defense on the draft's second day.

Detroit Lions rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford must win over his new teammates, writes Tom Kowalsk of MLive.com.

Brian Van Ochten of the Grand Rapids Press recaps the Lions' draft, which he feels included some day two reaches.

Passing on Michael Crabtree, drafting B.J. Raji, and trading three picks to select linebacker Clay Matthews, are moves that could backfire on Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson.

The Packers' offensive line still has some holes in it.

Minnesota Vikings first round wide receiver Percy Harvin says he's matured.

The Vikings weren't the only ones interested in using a first round pick on Harvin, writes Sid Hartman.

Minnesota used their top three picks to address its three main positions of need.

Seven of the Atlanta Falcons' eight drafts picks were used on the defensive side of the ball.

Falcons first round defensive tackle Peria Jerry was introduced to the media on Sunday.

The Carolina Panthers used their first three picks this weekend to help improve their defense.
