Before the Kansas City Chiefs acquired Matt Cassel from the New England Patriots, there was talk of a three-way trade between the Denver Broncos, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New England Patriots.
In that trade, Tampa Bay would send their 1st round pick to Denver for Jay Cutler, with Denver sending that 1st round pick to New England for Cassel. The trade never happened, but word of the proposed trade surfaced and, well, Jay Cutler is a little pissed off about being shopped like that.
"My understanding at this point is they're trying to trade me," Cutler said. "We'll see where I end up at. I liked it here, I liked playing with these guys but obviously they're not going to let me have that opportunity."
Cutler is midway through his rookie deal, and emerged in 2008 as a Pro Bowl quarterback, so it's a little odd that the Broncos would look to trade for Cassel, even with Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels' familiarity with him from their time together in New England. Cutler is younger, has twice as many starts and is the closest the Broncos franchise has come to drafting and developing a suitable replacement for John Elway.
Repairing this fracture, and not letting it fester into something beyond repair, should be McDaniels and Brian Xanders' top priority.
"Anything can be mended," he said. "I'll always play with the guys we've got. I love playing for those guys. Obviously, Josh and I's relationship has taken a few steps backward. I don't play for the coaches anyway, I play for teammates. As long as we keep the guys we've got I'll go out there and play. I love those guys."

Giants Sign Rocky Bernard
The New York Giants and free agent defensive tackle Rocky Bernard have agreed on a contract, Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger is reporting.
Bernard spent the first seven years of his NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks, who chose him in the 5th round of the 2002 NFL Draft.
During his time in Seattle, Bernard started 54 games, becoming a full-time starter in 2006. A year earlier, Bernard posted a career-high 8.5 quarterback sacks, earning a three-year contract extension worth $13.5 million dollars.
For his career, Bernard has 29 quarterback sacks.
New York had expressed an interest in him in 2006, but he chose to remain with Seattle. The Giants were his first and only visit, and now that he's signed, he will be part of a defensive tackle rotation with Fred Robbins and Barry Cofield.

Brooking Signs With the Cowboys
Veteran linebacker Keith Brooking has agreed to a three-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys.
Brooking had spent his entire 11-year career with the Falcons, starting 133 consecutive games while making five straight trips to the Pro Bowl (2001-05) and posting 100+ tackles in each of the last eight seasons.
During his storied career, Brooking has registered 17 quarterback sacks and grabbed 12 interceptions.
Brooking became a free agent after voiding his contract, a decision he wrestled with.

Kitna Traded for Anthony Henry
Rather puzzling move, but the Dallas Cowboys have traded defensive back Anthony Henry, a cornerback who was thought to be moving to safety, straight up for quarterback Jon Kitna, who will serve as the #2 quarterback behind Tony Romo.
It was previously reported that Dallas acquired Kitna for draft picks, but that is not the case.

Texans Sign Antonio Smith to 5-Year Deal
The Houston Texans top priority this off-season was to improve their pass rush, and they hope to have taken a step in that direction by signing free agent defensive end Antonio Smith to a five-year, $35 million dollar contract.
Smith, 27, has spent all five years of his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals, starting 10 games during their Super Bowl run in 2008. In 62 career games, including 39 starts, Smith has 125 career tackles and 14.5 sacks.
Of the $35 million in Smith's contract, $12.5 million is guaranteed.

Lions Trade Kitna to Cowboys
The NFL Network is reporting that the Detroit Lions have traded quarterback Jon Kitna to the Dallas Cowboys.
Compensation for Kitna is unknown, but it's believed to be for a second-day draft choice, or a combination of late-round picks.
Kitna has spent 12 years in the NFL, making 115 starts. Last season, Kitna was placed on injured reserve with a back injury, a move he felt was unnecessary and as a move meant to push him out of the Motor City.
The pride of Central Washington University has thrown for 27,293 yards and 152 touchdowns, and 151 interceptions, since being signed as an undrafted free agent in 1997 by the Seattle Seahawks.
Kitna has one-year remaining on his present contract, and will replace Brad Johnson as Tony Romo's primary backup.

Baylor's Smith To Stick With Combine Numbers
Baylor University's Pro Day is scheduled for this upcoming Tuesday, but it's most marquee participant, projected Top 5 pick Jason Smith, won't be running drills.
Smith had decided to let his impressive workout at the 2009 NFL Scouting Combine stand on its own, but will participate in position drills.
Frankly, I don't blame him.
Currently projected to be the 1st or 2nd pick of the entire 2009 NFL Draft, working out during the Pro Day could only do his draft stock harm. His best course of action would be to show up, cheer his teammates on, do his position drills and answer any and all questions talent evaluators have of him.

Chiefs Trade 2nd Round Pick for Cassel
Sports Illustrated's Peter King is reporting that the Kansas City Chiefs sent a second-round pick to the New England Patriots for quarterback Matt Cassel.
Wow.
The Chiefs' second-round pick in 2009 is the 34th pick, which gives New England three second-round picks in 2009 (34, 47, 58). Overall, New England has four of the first 58 picks in the 2009 NFL Draft.

Patriots Trade Cassel to the Chiefs
The New England Patriots have traded quarterback Matt Cassel to the Kansas City Chiefs, Adam Schefter of the NFL Network is reporting.
Details concerning the trade are presently unknown.
As a former personnel executive with the New England Patriots, Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli was always believed to have an interest in Cassel, who he drafted and watched develop into a legitimate starting quarterback in the National Football League.

Saints Re-Sign Stinchcomb

New Orleans, strapped against the salary cap, are now 2-for-2 in re-signing their own key free agents this off-season.

Broncos Sign Andra Davis
According to Aaron Wilson of RavensInsider.com and ProFootballTalk.com, the Denver Broncos have signed free agent linebacker Andra Davis, formerly of the Cleveland Browns.
Davis is an inside linebacker who has spent his entire 7-year career with the Browns. His top season came in 2003, when he made 136 tackles and had 5 quarterback sacks. Davis has proven to be a productive member of the defense, provided he stays healthy. With Denver shifting to a 3-4 defense, they'll need an experienced inside linebacker, so Davis certainly makes some sense here.
To update previous posts, Darrell Reid received a three-year, $6.8 million dollar deal from the Broncos, who are also in discussions with free agent cornerback Andre Goodman.

Marvez: Broncos Sign DT Darrell Reid
Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com is reporting that the Denver Broncos have reached an agreement with free agent defensive tackle Darrell Reid.
At 6-2 and 288 pounds, Reid projects as a defensive end in the Broncos' shift to a 3-4 defense.
Reid, 26, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Indianapolis Colts. In four seasons, Reid appeared in 55 games, making 98 tackles and registering 2.5 quarterbacks sacks, including a career-high 2.0 in 2008.
This brings the Broncos' unofficial roster addition total to 8, including the not-yet-official signings of safety Brian Dawkins and restricted free agent David Anderson.

Tedy Bruschi Reacts to Vrabel Trade
New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi sent the following e-mail to the Boston Herald about the trade that sent his longtime teammate to the Kansas City Chiefs for an undisclosed draft choice on Friday:
”We’ve lost perhaps our best all around football player. Defense, offense, special teams, Vrabes did it all. His intelligence and on field adjustments can not be replaced. This team has just changed immensely. ”

ESPN Discovers Poison Pill in Haynesworth's Contract
ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that within Albert Haynesworth's contract with the Washington Redskins exists a $29 million dollar "poison pill" in the fifth year of the contract that the team will certainly not pick up.
So Haynesworth's $100 million dollar contract is essentially a four-year, $48 million dollar deal.

QB Fitzpatrick Signs With Bills
Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, most recently of the Cincinnati Bengals, has agreed to a contract with the Buffalo Bills.
Fitzpatrick started 12 games for the injured Carson Palmer in 2008, completing 221-of-372 pass attempts (59.4%) for 1,905 yards and 8 touchdowns. He also threw 9 interceptions, going 4-7-1 in his dozen starts.
On the bright side, he did win his last three starts.
Originally a 7th-round draft choice out of Harvard by the St. Louis Rams in 2005, Fitzpatrick was traded to Cincinnati in 2007.

Jets Re-Sign Brandon Moore
Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News is reporting that the New York Jets have re-signed guard Brandon Moore tonight to a four-year contract worth $16 million dollars, including $10 million in guarantees.
Earlier this week, the Jets released Moore to avoid paying a $7 million dollar roster bonus to him. Because they had grandiose plans in free agency, avoiding that $7 million dollar payout created some additional cap room. By re-signing him, and even giving him more than $7 million upfront, his impact on the salary cap has been lessened.
Risky move, since Moore could've signed elsewhere. But considering how busy the Jets were today, and still got Moore back into the fold, Mike Tannenbaum presumably would say it was worth it.

Redskins Keep Spending
The Washington Redskins signed free agent guard Derrick Dockery to a five-year contract worth $26 million dollars tonight.
Dockery, whose career began with the Redskins, was released by the Buffalo Bills earlier this week, just two years after signing a 7-year, $49 million dollar contract.
As part of the deal, Dockery will receive $8.5 million guaranteed. Combined with his two-year haul from the Bills, Dockery will have pocketed $27 million dollars.
Not too shabby for a guy with zero Pro Bowl appearances.

Eagles Trade Lito Sheppard to Jets
The Philadelphia Eagles finally unloaded disgruntled cornerback Lito Sheppard, trading him this evening to the New York Jets in exchange for a 2009 fifth-round pick, as well as a conditional draft choice in 2010.
Sheppard, 27, is a former 1st round pick by the Eagles who signed a long-term extension before his rookie deal expired. As a result, he was unable to participate in the financial boom the position experienced in recent off-seasons.
He will compete with up-and-comer Dwight Lowery for the starting corner job opposite Pro Bowler Darrelle Revis.

Rams Make Jason Brown the Highest Paid Center in NFL
Unrestricted free agent center Jason Brown has agreed to sign with the St. Louis Rams.
Brown, who was the most highly sought after interior offensive linemen in this year's free agent class, reportedly signed a 5-year contract worth $37.5 million dollars. The deal contains $20 million in guarantees.
The $7.5 million per year average would be the richest contract ever awarded to a center, eclipsing what the Tampa Bay Buccaneers paid Jeff Faine last off-season.

Boley, Giants Close on 5-Year Deal
The New York Giants and unrestricted free agent linebacker Michael Boley are close to an agreement on a 5-year, $25 million dollar contract that contains $10 million in guaranteed money.
Boley, 26, spent the first four years of his career with the Falcons. After being benched late in 2008 for poor play, the Falcons made no attempt to re-sign him this off-season. Boley's poor play last season wasn't going to impact his value on the free agent market, as he simply wasn't a good fit in the Falcons' new defensive scheme under head coach Mike Smith.
At his best when playing downhill, Boley was asked to be a read-and-react linebacker, which took him out of his game.

Vikings Re-Sign Kleinsasser
Veteran tight end Jim Kleinsasser re-signed with the Minnesota Vikings today.
The 10-year veteran has spent his entire career with the Vikings, but reportedly received contract offers from four other teams. In the end, he opted to remain with the only team he's known, and will receive $9 million dollars over the next three seasons.

49ers Re-Sign Takeo Spikes
San Francisco 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan expected the 49ers to be quiet at the start of free agency, and compared to last year, they have. Instead of shooting out the gates with a long-term, big-money contract, like they did with Justin Smith in 2008, the 49ers have made three low-key, but important, signings.
This morning, the 49ers signed fullback Moran Norris to a five-year contract. Norris previously played for the 49ers, and he's expected to pave the way for Frank Gore, but also to serve as a buffer as the team attempts to reduce Gore's workload.
This afternoon, the 49ers reached a two-year deal with linebacker Takeo Spikes, who finished second behind Patrick Willis in tackles in 2008.
Return specialist Allen Rossum was also re-signed today.

'Hawks Wooing Houshmandzadeh
Motorists driving near Qwest Field in Seattle have reported seeing T.J. Houshmandzadeh's image on the stadium's scoreboard, a sign that in addition to showing off the Virginia Mason Athletic Center, a gorgeous facility on the shore of Lake Washington, the Seattle Seahawks are giving the unrestricted free agent a tour of the stadium he'd be playing in should he choose to sign with Seattle.
Seattle is Houshmandzadeh's first stop on his free agent tour, which is expected to take him to Minnesota, Philadelphia and to New York to meet with the Giants' front office.
In 8 NFL seasons, Houshmandzadeh has 507 receptions for 5,782 yards and 37 touchdowns. One concern teams should have about him is that he'll turn 32 this year and his average yards per catch has dropped from 12.0 in 2006 to 9.8 last season. If reports are true, and he's asking for a contract that averages $8 million per year, teams might want to think twice about committing that much money to a solid receiver, but one at the "possession" stage of his career.

Broncos Sign Jabar Gaffney
Unrestricted free agent wide receiver Jabar Gaffney has agreed to a four-year deal worth $10 million with the Denver Broncos.
The contract contains $3 million in guarantees and reunites Gaffney with Josh McDaniels, his former offensive coordinator with the New England and first-year head coach of the Broncos.
Gaffney, 28, has spent seven seasons in the NFL (4 with Houston, 3 with New England), missing just five games and totaling 256 receptions for 3,068 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Broncos Continue Free Agent Splurge
Denver Broncos general manager Brian Xanders continues his busy Friday with a pair of moves, though one isn't 100% official yet.
First off, the Broncos have signed free agent safety Renaldo Hill (Dolphins) to a four-year, $10 million dollar contract that includes $3 million in guarantees. Hill is a free safety, who'll start alongside the newly signed Brian Dawkins.
Secondly, the Broncos have signed Houston Texans restricted free agent David Anderson to an offer sheet. Houston will have seven days to match the offer. If they decline, the Broncos will be required to compensate the Texans with a 7th round draft pick in April's draft.

Brian Dawkins Signs With Denver
David White of the San Francisco Chronicle (man its nice to credit someone other than Schefter) is reporting that unrestricted free agent safety Brian Dawkins has agreed to a contract with the Denver Broncos.
Dawkins, 35, spent his first 13 seasons in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles, who chose him with the 61st pick in the 1996 NFL Draft. Dawkins is a 7-time Pro Bowler (including in 2008) and has been a first-team All-Pro five times in his career.

Saints, Vilma Agree on 5-Year Deal
Adam Schefter of the NFL Network is reporting that the New Orleans Saints and middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma have agreed on a five-year deal worth $34 million dollars.
Schefter reports the deal is to contain $17 million in guarantees and that Vilma will receive $23 million in the first three years.
Tampa Bay was rumored to be interested in Vilma, who opted to stay with the team that traded for him a year ago.

Reggie Williams Busted for DUI/Marijuana Possession
Unrestricted free agent wide receiver Reggie Williams was arrested in Houston this morning and charged with DWI and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
Williams, 25, is a former 1st round pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars, who made no effort to re-sign after his fifth and final season with the team.
The former University of Washington star failed three sobriety tests and refused to voluntarily give a blood or urine sample. He was pulled over because he was unable to maintain a single lane of traffic and failed to signal when changing lanes.

Broncos Sign Pair of Running Backs, Part 2
Earlier this morning, less than an hour into free agency, Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com reported that the Denver Broncos had signed unrestricted free agent running backs J.J. Arrington and Correll Buckhalter.
He'd later amend that to read that the Broncos had lined up visits with those players, but "visit" in the current age of free agency is a polite euphemism for "has already agreed to a contract, but we have to make it appear like these things aren't already discussed before free agency begins".
So today, it should surprise no one, that J.J. Arrington and Correll Buckhalter have both agreed to four-year contracts with the Denver Broncos.

Titans, Collins Agree on Two-Year Deal
The Tennessee Titans have agreed on a two-year deal with quarterback Kerry Collins.
According to Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean, the deal is worth $15 million and includes $8.5 million in guarantees.
“Kerry did a great job for us last year stepping back into the starting role,” said Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt. “He has veteran leadership, tons of game experience and we expect him to continue to play at a high level for us.”
Collins earned Pro Bowl honors in 2008, leading the Titans to a 13-3 record and the #1 seed in the AFC Playoffs.

Bengals Re-Sign Chris Crocker
Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com is reporting that the Cincinnati Bengals have re-signed safety Chris Crocker to a four-year contract.
Crocker's goal was to sign on the first day of free agency, and he's agreed to a contract worth $10 million dollars, including $3.5 million guaranteed.

Dolphins Sign Joe Berger
Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald is reporting that the Miami Dolphins have signed free agent offensive lineman Joe Berger to a three-year contract.
Berger will compete for either the starting center or right guard job.
Considering how well Donald Thomas played at right guard before his season ended due to injury, and how the problem the Dolphins have with center Samson Satele's lack of size, Berger (6-5, 310) figures to already have the inside track at the center position.

Panthers' Beason Has Shoulder Surgery
Carolina Panthers linebacker Jon Beason tore the labrum in his shoulder and will be out for 4 months, Beason wrotes on his blog.
Beason says the injury originally took place in an October game against the Arizona Cardinals, but he played through the injury because he won't let an injury to his "wing" keep him out of the game.
"I absolutely will be ready for training camp and I’ll be at full strength for our first exhibition game. I really think I can be ready for OTAs at the end of May, but I don’t know how much they’ll let me play against guys who are trying to make the team."

Broncos Sign Long-Snapper Paxton
Free agent long-snapper Lonie Paxton has agreed to a five-year with the Denver Broncos.
Paxton, 30, had been with the New England Patriots for the last 8 seasons, where he earned three Super Bowl rings. And by earning, I mean being the guy who snapped the ball to the holder so Adam Vinatieri can give the Patriots three points.
Despite his seemingly small role, Paxton was a fan favorite in New England, gaining cult status after making a snow angel after Vinatieri's game-winning field goal over the Oakland Raiders in the AFC Divisional Playoff game in January of 2002.
New England made little effort to re-sign Paxton, who earned $880,000 in 2008.
It's no surprise that on the first day of free agency, former Patriots assistant coach Josh McDaniels adds a former Patriot to his roster.

Chris Canty To Meet With the Giants
Dallas Cowboys unrestricted free agent defensive end Chris Canty was originally going to begin his free agent tour with the Washington Redskins. After they re-signed DeAngelo Hall and lured Albert Haynesworth to D.C. with $100 million dollars, they canceled their visit with Canty.
Canty had planned on going to Tennessee and then to Seattle, but before he does that, he may be heading to New Jersey to meet with the New York Giants, Mike Garafolo is reporting this afternoon.
At 6-7 and 300 pounds, Canty played defensive end in the Cowboys' 3-4, but 4-3 teams are viewing him as a guy who can play right defensive end and be a force against the run, and sliding him inside on 3rd down to rush the passer.

Steelers Re-Sign Chris Kemoeatu
The Pittsburgh Steelers have come to an agreement with guard Chris Kemoeatu on a five-year, $20 million contract extension.
Kemoeatu, 26, became a starter in 2008, his fourth season with the Steelers since being drafted in the 6th round of the 2005 NFL Draft. The New York Jets had been targeting him, but unlike last year when longtime Steelers guard Alan Faneca signed with the Jets as a free agent, the Steelers were able to hang onto this one.

Patriots to Trade Mike Vrabel to Kansas City
Eager to acquire players he's familiar with, Kansas City Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli is nearing a deal that would have the Chiefs acquiring veteran outside linebacker Mike Vrabel from the New England Patriots.
Adam Schefter reports that Vrabel is currently in Kansas City undergoing a physical, and if all goes well, he'll soon be a member of the Kansas City Chiefs.
The 12-year veteran has spent the last 8 seasons with the Patriots, playing a crucial role, on both offense and defense, in all three of their Lombardi trophies. 2009 is the final year of Vrabel's contract, and by trading or releasing him, the Patriots will free up $3.3 million dollars in cap space.

Carpenter: Redskins Out of Money and Still Have Holes
Washington Times sportswriter Les Carpenter sees the "danger" signs after the Washington Redskins have invested so heavily in Albert Haynesworth and DeAngelo Hall.
Here's the money quote: "...the message the team sent with the early morning deal with Haynesworth is that Washington is merely a player away from overtaking the Eagles and the Giants to become the best team in the NFC East. The Redskins are not a player away. Not even close. Haynesworth helps; he may help a lot. He may be the best defensive lineman who was available. He might be the best defensive lineman in the league. But bringing him here alone and inserting him on the same shoddy defensive line that failed the Redskins so many times last season is not going to send this team to the Super Bowl."
Carpenter points to how Jim Zorn should know better, since he saw a similar approach taken in Seattle in 1997 failed. However, that implies that Zorn has the front office pull that would keep Daniel Snyder from doing the only thing Daniel Snyder knows to do: Throw big money at big names.

Ravens Land Foxworth
The Baltimore Ravens have signed free agent cornerback Domonique Foxworth to a four-year, $28 million dollar contract that includes $16.5 million in guaranteed money, reports Adam Schefter of the NFL Network.
Foxworth is a Baltimore native and a former University of Maryland star. Originally a third-round pick by the Denver Broncos, Foxworth was traded to the Atlanta Falcons for a conditional draft choice last September.

Browns Trade Kellen Winslow to Tampa Bay
The Cleveland Browns have traded Sergeant Winslow to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for undisclosed draft picks.
"The Cleveland Browns thank Kellen for his contributions to this organization over the past five years," Browns general manager George Kokinis said in a statement on Friday. "We appreciate his passion for the game and wish him success in Tampa Bay. The draft picks we have obtained through this deal will give us greater flexibility as we look to infuse more talent and create competition and depth on this football team."
Winslow was a 1st round pick in 2004, posting 219 receptions for 2,459 yards and 11 career touchdowns. Winslow earned Pro Bowl honors in 2007.

Rams Have Jason Brown in the Building
The St. Louis Rams are currently hosting free agent center Jason Brown (Ravens) and likely will not let him out of their facility without him putting his signature on a new contract.
Brown, 25, is highly valued because of his age (25), experience (45 starts), size (6-3, 320) and versatility (can play center and guard), and wants to be paid in the $7 million dollars per year range recently paid to top-flight guards, but not centers.

Redskins to Release Shawn Springs
To clear cap space to accommodate the signings of DeAngelo Hall and Albert Haynesworth, the Washington Redskins have informed cornerback Shawn Springs that he will be released today.
Springs has spent the last five seasons with the Redskins, signing there in 2004 after seven seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.
"They did what's best for the team, and I'm happy for them," Springs said. "I'm going to miss my friends there, but as long as it makes the team better, I understand. I'm a true fan of the sport."

Jets Nearing a Deal with Bart Scott
Free agent linebacker Bart Scott has agreed to the parameters of a contract with the New York Jets, and is flying to New Jersey today to meet with team officials, Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News reports.
Scott's contract is believed to be for five years and $37.5 million dollars.
Scott, who turns 29 in August, has spent his entire career with the Baltimore Ravens. Initially a special teams standout, Scott moved into the starting lineup in 2005 and has averaged over 90 tackles per season in the last four seasons.
Widely praised for his leadership, on and off the field, Scott was targeted by the Jets in part because of his relationship with new Jets head coach Rex Ryan, who was previously the Ravens' defensive coordinator.
Scott was reportedly close to a deal to remain in Baltimore, but it fell apart last evening. St. Louis was also interested in visiting with Scott.

Patriots Sign Chris Baker
Free agent tight end Chris Baker, released last week by the New York Jets, has found a home with the New England Patriots, Adam Schefter is reporting.
Baker and the Jets had a sometimes rocky relationship, but both sides left the door open for a return once the new league year. Perhaps in retaliation for releasing him and denying him $9 million dollars, a year after using a 1st round draft pick on a tight end, Baker has signed with the Jets biggest rival.

Eagles Sign Stacy Andrews
ProFootballTalk.com is reporting via Twitter that the Philadelphia Eagles have signed free agent offensive tackle Stacy Andrews (Bengals).
Andrews, 26, played last season under the franchise tag and tore an ACL in the regular season finale. Earlier this month, Andrews reported that he was ahead of schedule in his rehab from surgery and will be ready for the start of training camp.
This signing, the terms of which are presently unknown, reunites Stacy with his brother Shawn, who was a 1st round draft pick by the Eagles in 2004.

Chicago Bears Sign Offensive Lineman
The Chicago Bears improved their offensive line by signing offensive tackle Frank Omiyale to a four-year contract worth between $11.5 and $14 million dollars.
Omiyale was a 5th round draft choice by the Atlanta Falcons in 2005, and spent time with the Arizona Cardinals before eventually landing a spot as a reserve for the Carolina Panthers.
By signing Omiyale, they'll likely back-off their attempts to re-sign John St. Clair, whose contract demands the Bears were hesitant to reach.

2009 NFL Free Agency Is Underway
Unlike last year when the Miami Dolphins lured guard Justin Smiley away from San Francisco, no free agents relocated within the first 30 minutes of free agency.
Cornerback DeAngelo Hall signed a six-year, $55 million dollar contract extension with the Washington Redskins thirty minutes into Friday, who followed that up by spending $100 million on defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth several hours later.
Plenty of visits are lined up, though, and it appears as though plenty of deals will go down during normal business hours today.

Canty is also scheduled to visit Washington today, Tennessee on Saturday, and Seattle on Monday. (Those franchises are somewhat connected. Haynesworth to the Redskins
Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean reports that defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth will sign a seven-year, $100 million dollar contract to become the latest big-ticket item signed by Daniel Snyder's Washington Redskins organization.
Haynesworth is expected to travel to Washington, D.C. to officially sign the contract, which has a maximum value of $115 million dollars and contains $41 million in guarantees.
The size of this contract is shocking, considering how cap-strapped the Washington Redskins appeared to be. Now they've signed two players (Haynesworth, DeAngelo Hall) to contracts worth $154 million dollars, including $63.5 million in guarantees.

Brian Waters Wants Out of Kansas City
Jason Whitlock of the Kansas City Star is reporting that Kansas City Chiefs guard Brian Waters asked the team to trade or release him.
Citing a source, Whitlock reports that Waters asked for his release after a brief meeting with new head coach Todd Haley and being told that "first-time" general manager Scott Pioli had no interest in meeting with Waters.
(I put "first time" in quotes because Pioli has essentially been the top personnel man for a three-time Super Bowl winner for the last decade.)
Waters, 32, has been with the Chiefs since 2000 and has three years remaining on his contract. Releasing him now would free $4.3 million in salary cap room.

Philadelphia Eagles
New York Giants
Minnesota Vikings
Seattle Seahawks
"I can't wait to get it over with," Houshmandzadeh said. "I don't know why I'm nervous".
Houshmandzadeh will turn 32 this September and has spent his entire career with the Cincinnati Bengals. In eight seasons, Houshmandzadeh has 507 receptions, 5,782 yards and 37 touchdowns. He earned Pro Bowl honors for the first time following the 2007 season, where he had 112 receptions, 1,143 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Richardson signed with the Jets last season as a free agent from Minnesota. The bulk of Richardson's career was spent with the Kansas City Chiefs, after entering the NFL in 1994 with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent.

Rams to Host Pair of Ravens
Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com is reporting that the St. Louis Rams will host unrestricted free agents Jason Brown (C) and Bart Scott (LB), both formerly of the Baltimore Ravens.
The Ravens were reportedly within $700K on a new deal with Scott earlier today, so perhaps news of him making a trip to the Gateway City will prompt the Ravens to pony up some additional cash.

Broncos Line Up Visits With Pair of Running Backs
Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com reports that the Denver Broncos have lined up visits with free agent running backs J.J. Arrington and Correll Buckhalter.
Both players have spent their careers in reserve roles.
Arrington spent the first four years of his career with the Arizona Cardinals, making 8 starts and carrying the ball 183 times for 654 yards and 3 touchdowns. He added 91 receptions in four seasons, totaling more than 25 receptions in three of his four years.
Buckhalter, who'll turn 31 this year, missed the 2002, 2004 and 2005 seasons with injuries, but has made 16 starts in the five seasons he's stayed healthy for. He has 476 carries, 2,155 yards and 18 touchdowns on his resume and his coming off a season where he ran for 369 yards and gained 324 yards receiving on 26 receptions.

Colts, Saturday Agree to a 3-Year Deal
The Indianapolis Colts have re-signed veteran center Jeff Saturday to a three-year contract, keeping the veteran in the only NFL uniform he's ever worn and away from the free agent market.
Saturday had been flirting openly with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He originally joined the Colts as an undrafted free agent in 1999.

Kurt Warner to Test Free Agent Market
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner's agent Mark Bartelstein spent his Thursday trying to negotiate a contract that will keep Warner in Arizona for the remainder of his NFL career.
He left without a contract.
So this means that Warner will be an unrestricted free agent in a little over 4 hours, and with the New York Jets and Chicago Bears still in need of a quarterback, it could mean bad news for the defending NFC Champions.

The Pittsburgh Steelers released guard Kendall Simmons this afternoon.
Simmons turns 30 next month and had three years and $12.1 million dollars remaining on his current contract. He missed most of 2008 with a torn Achilles tendon.
By releasing Simmons, the Steelers actually take a cap hit of $40,000. Rookie linebacker Mike Humpal was also released.

Jets Release Brandon Moore

Dolphins Re-Sign Yeremiah Bell
Despite signing free agent strong safety Gibril Wilson to a 5-year, $27 million dollar contract earlier today, the Miami Dolphins have re-signed strong safety Yeremiah Bell to a four-year, $20 million dollar contract this afternoon.
Between Wilson ($8M) and Bell ($10M), the Dolphins will have committed $18 million in guaranteed money to the back-end of their secondary today.
Obviously, either Wilson or Bell, likely Wilson, will slide over to predominately play the free safety position. Unless the Phins re-sign last year's free safety Renaldo Hill, then all bets are off.

Cowboys Release Brad Johnson
40-year old quarterback Brad Johnson was released by the Dallas Cowboys today.
The roster move is not unexpected, as Johnson carried a $2.8 million dollar cap figure, and wasn't an effective backup last season when Tony Romo missed a few games with a broken pinkie finger.
By releasing Johnson, the Cowboys clear $2 million in salary cap room.

Vick's Release From Jail is Granted
Imprisoned NFL quarterback Michael Vick will be allowed to serve the remainder of his 23-month prison sentence at his home, and under electronic surveillance, as there is no room for him at a Newports News, Virginia halfway house.
Vick has been held at the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas after pleading guilty to financing a dogfighting operation at his Surry County, Va. home. Vick also confessed to taking part in the killing of dogs.
Vick will be allowed to return to his Hampton, Va. home on or after May 21 of this year, and will be eligible for full release in July.
Still under contract to the Atlanta Falcons, their general manager Thomas Dimitroff has publicly expressed a desire to trade the talented, but troubled quarterback. Thus far, there have been no takers and teams that were even rumored to be interested in Vick have released statements, sometimes several, reiterating their lack of interest in a player who will bring with him a lot of media scrutiny to the team that eventually signs him.

Bills Release Dockery
The Buffalo Bills have released guard Derrick Dockery, Adam Schefter of the NFL Network reports.
Dockery signed a 7-year, $49 million contract that has become commonplace for guards these days (Thanks, Minnesota!), but his play declined sharply in 2008 and today, he's a salary cap casualty.
Buffalo paid Dockery $18.5 million for two seasons of work. He'll still account for $5.4 million in dead money on their '09 cap.

Dolphins Sign Gibril Wilson
The Miami Dolphins got an early jump on free agency by agreeing to a five-year deal with free agent safety Gibril Wilson.
Wilson, 27, was released by the Oakland Raiders last week, less than a year after signing a six-year, $39 million dollar free agent contract.
The signing won't be official until Friday, but does indicate that the Dolphins won't try to re-sign strong safety Yeremiah Bell.

Forecasting Where the 2009 NFL Free Agents Will Go
Free agency gets underway at 12:01am tomorrow morning (Site note: I'll be here reporting on the comings and goings), so here's a look at where the Top 10 unrestricted, non-franchised free agents could end up:
1. Albert Haynesworth, DT - Washington wants him, but I think Haynesworth would prefer to either re-sign with Tennessee or play for a team in the southeast. Mac's Pick: Tampa Bay.
2. T.J. Houshmandzadeh, WR - Because of his ties to the PNW, a lot of folks have Houshmandzadeh headed to the Seahawks. I'm not one of them. Two or three years ago, he would've helped the Seahawks immensely, but right now, not so much. He'll be 32, is a possession receiver, and isn't the playmaker Seattle needs. Mac's Pick: NY Giants.
3. Marvin Harrison, WR - The door is somewhat open for Harrison to return to Indianapolis, but I think Harrison goes back to his hometown. Mac's Pick: Philadelphia.
4. Ray Lewis, LB - I don't think the Baltimore Ravens let him walk out the door. Mac's Pick: Re-signs with Baltimore.
5. Kurt Warner, QB - He really doesn't want to leave Arizona, and the feeling is mutual. Mac's Pick: Re-signs with Arizona.
6. Laveranues Coles, WR - Coles walked away from $6 million dollars, but he'll make that up somewhere. Mac's Pick: Miami.
7. Jason Brown, C - The Miami Dolphins are going to go hard after this young, athletic center, and they will pay him guard money. Mac's Pick: Miami.
8. Bart Scott, LB - With Lewis likely staying in Baltimore, Scott will re-join Rex Ryan in the Big Apple. Mac's Pick: NY Jets.
9. Chris Canty, DE - Canty is the prototypical 3-4 defensive end, and with several teams making that switch, he'll be in demand. Mac's Pick: Denver.
10. Derrick Brooks, LB - Considering Tampa Bay's solid cap situation, and Derrick Brooks value as a leader and stature as a future Hall of Fame, I was a bit blind-sided by his release. Mac's Pick: Washington.

2009 Salary Cap Increasing to $127M
Adam Schefter of the NFL Network is reporting tonight that the salary cap is increasing from $123 million to just over $127 million dollars for the 2009 season. An increase has been rumored for a few weeks now, with some people estimating it could rise to as much as $130 million.
The reason for the increase is because teams haven't been spending as much as they were supposed to, and were using loopholes like "Likely to be earned incentives" to push their unused cap room into the next season. (Green Bay, for instance, has $132 million in cap room to work with this season)
The free agent signing period gets underway at 12:01am on Friday.

Nobody has been busier today that Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik. After releasing five veterans, including future Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Brooks, the Buccaneers general manager has placed the first and third-round restricted free agent tender on offensive tackle Donald Penn.
The two sides had been working towards a long-term deal, but one does not appear to be on the horizon. Dominik was not helped by his in-state neighbors, the Miami Dolphins, who signed right tackle Vernon Carey to a six-year, $42 million contract last week.
Under the tender, Penn will earn $2,792,000 in 2009.

Rams Release Drew Bennett, Trent Green
The St. Louis Rams cleared $1.35 million in salary cap room today by releasing veteran quarterback Trent Green and wide receiver Drew Bennett.
Green spent one season in St. Louis after signing a three-year contract last off-season. He appeared in three games, starting one, but the team may look to get younger and backup quarterback position.
Bennett has been a free agent bust since signing a lucrative free agent contract with the Rams in 2007. In two seasons in St. Louis, Bennett appeared in 15 games, made 1 start and had 34 receptions, 379 yards and 3 touchdowns. Last year, Bennett's season ended in Week One.
With four years remaining on his contract, he'll still account for $5 million in dead money on the Rams' 2009 salary cap.

Bucs' Dominik Cleans House
New Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik is cleaning house in Tampa. After informing the agent for Joey Galloway that the team planned to release the 37-year old wide receiver, the Buccaneers have also released:
LB Derrick Brooks
LB Cato June
WR Ike Hilliard
RB Warrick Dunn
All are over 30 and were entering the final years of their contracts.
In total, the moves clear $10.95 million in cap space and over $11 million dollars in capital. The Buccaneers could use that money and cap space to re-sign franchised wide receiver Antonio Bryant to a long-term contract, and keep wide receiver Michael Clayton, tackle Donald Penn, safety Jermaine Phillips and cornerback Phillip Buchanon off the unrestricted free agent market.
Tampa Bay is also a rumored destination for Albert Haynesworth.

The Carolina Panthers cleared some salary cap space by releasing veteran wide receiver D.J. Hackett, guard Jeremy Bridges and running back Nick Goings.

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney is also expected to make a decision on cornerback Ken Lucas, who is due to count $10.7 million dollars against the Panthers' salary cap this season. Releasing him would save another $3.4 million in cap room.

Buccaneers to Release Galloway
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will release wide receiver Joey Galloway, the St. Petersburg Times is reporting.
Galloway, 37, missed the first half of the 2008 season and earned the nickname "White Tiger" from then-head coach Jon Gruden.
By releasing Galloway, the Buccaneers avoid having to pay a $250,000 roster bonus and will save $2.25 million dollars overall on their '09 cap. He will count for $1.185 million in dead cap space.

No News Is Bad News
From the soon-to-be defunct "Talkin' Hawks" blog at the soon-t0-be defunct Seattle Post-Intelligencer:
"I'll be out of the loop this morning because I'm attending a meeting at the P-I on how to maneuver applying for and receiving unemployment benefits. Yesterday, I was "gone" for a few hours in the afternoon because I had a job interview."
That was written by Clare Farnsworth, who has been covering the Seattle Seahawks for the P-I for 30 years. Clare will soon be out of job soon as the 145-year old newspaper either shuts down completely or moves to a links-based online-only operation that has no place for a well-respected veteran journalist like Clare.
My desire to write about sports began when I was a kid and would read Will McDonough and Peter Gammons' columns every Sunday in the Boston Globe. My desire to write about football came from reading Farnsworth's coverage of the Seattle Seahawks in the Seattle P-I from 3,000 miles away when it went online in the mid-90s.
(Ironically, the newspapers failure to discover a method of monetizing their online entities is a major reason why newspapers like the P-I are closing.)
Hopefully, a smart magazine like The Sporting News will hire Farnsworth, because I can't imagine an NFL season without him writing about it.
