The New England Patriots shuffled their roster in advance of Sunday's regular season finale against the Houston Texans, waiving defensive lineman Titus Adams and signing center Ryan Wendell off the practice squad.
Because the Patriots do more to reward their practice squad players than just about every other team in the league, Wendell actually won't receive an increase in salary. Practice squad players usually receive $5,200 per week, or $88,400 over a 17-week season, but in the last weeks, the Patriots quietly bumped Wendell's pay to the minimum base salary for a first-year player ($310,000, or $18,235 per week, before taxes).
Adams, who will be free to sign with another team if he clears waivers, was earning over $8,800 per week on the Patriots' practice squad before he was signed to the active roster in Week 14. Because New England was paying him more than the minimum before signing to the active roster, and likely want to keep him around for the playoffs and 2010, other teams will likely need to dig deep and guarantee him money to pry him away from New England.
