Lions Place S Manuel on IR

The Detroit Lions have placed veteran safety Marquand Manuel on injured reserve, John Niyo of the Detroit News reports.

To replace Manuel on the 53-man roster, the Lions signed cornerback DeAngelo Smith off the Chicago Bears' practice squad.

Manuel had started six of his nine games with the Lions, making 36 tackles and defending a pair of passes. The Lions were the sixth team the 8-year veteran had played for after breaking into the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals, who chose the former Florida Gator in the sixth-round of the 2002 NFL Draft. Manuel has also played for the Seattle Seahawks (2004-05), Green Bay Packers (2006), Carolina Panthers (2007), and Denver Broncos (2008). Before being placed on injured reserve today, Manuel had missed just five games in his career.

A starter in 58 of his 116 career games, Manuel has 365 tackles, 1 quarterback sack, and 2 career interceptions.

Smith was a fifth-round pick (143rd overall) out of the University of Cincinnati by the Dallas Cowboys in this year's NFL Draft. Smith made 7 tackles for the Cowboys during the pre-season, but was waived as part of the team's final cuts. Smith was claimed by the Cleveland Browns and spent the first week of the regular season on their active roster before being waived again. Claimed by Chicago, Smith spent two weeks on their 53-man roster before being waived again and re-signed to their practice squad.

Smith was not active during his three weeks on an NFL active roster. His most notable NFL moment thus far came when he challenged fellow fifth-round pick David Buehler, a kicker from USC, to a 50-yard...and lost.

I bet he could take Jason Hanson, though.
