Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com, who was the first to report the details of the contract signed by New England Patriots second-round cornerback Darius Butler, reports today that Butler's contract may have been disapproved by the NFL Management Council.
Butler's contract reportedly contained over $2 million dollars in guaranteed money, which Florio wrote represented a 38% increase over what the ninth pick of the 2008 NFL Draft signed for.
What's bothered me about Butler's deal is this: Including the $150,000 "log" bonus, the total guaranteed portion of Butler's deal is $2.217M, which is a few thousand dollars less than the guaranteed portion of the contract signed last year by Denver Broncos wide receiver Eddie Royal, who was chosen one spot after the slot that Butler was chosen this year.
This may have nothing at all to do with the contract potentially being disapproved, just making note of something I found to be curious.
Stay tuned.
UPDATE: The Patriots have announced the signing, but that still does not mean the NFL Management Council has approved the deal. The Atlanta Falcons had three rookie contracts disapproved after they had announced the signings on their website.
