The New England Patriots have acquired tight end Alex Smith from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for an undisclosed 2010 draft choice.
Smith is entering his 5th season after being selected with the 71st pick of the 2005 NFL Draft, 13 picks ahead cornerback Ellis Hobbs, whom New England dealt to Philadelphia on Sunday. During his four years in Tampa Bay, Smith caught 129 passes for 1,252 yards and 11 touchdowns.
With the off-season acquisition of Kellen Winslow, as well as the presence of Jerramy Stevens and John Gilmore, Smith was expendable. He brings with him to New England a base salary of $1.55 million dollars, and is in the final year of his rookie contract.
