Must be a slows news day, because NFL.com's Adam Schefter came up with this one:
"Tomlin saved his job with a win over Chargers"
Schefter's reasoning:
- After the Chargers beat the Raiders in September, Lane Kiffin was fired two days later.
- After the Chargers beat the Chiefs in December, Chiefs president Carl Peterson resigned the next day.
- After the Chargers beat the Broncos in December, the Broncos fired Mike Shanahan.
- After the Chargers beat the Colts in the Wild Card round, Colts head coach Tony Dungy retired.
"Now, we’ve heard of players being coach killers. But never has a team been one. The Chargers are. They’re a coach and executive killer. Tomlin has no idea how fortunate he is. Yes, he’s coaching in his first AFC Championship Game Sunday. But unlike Kiffin, Peterson, Shanahan and Dungy, he has a job. He survived the Chargers."
Mike Tomlin is 36 years old, has a 22-10 record and two division championships in his two seasons since replacing Bill Cowher as the head coach of a franchise that, in the last 40 years, has had just three head coaches.
But they would've fired him if he lost to the Chargers?
Um, right.
I'm sure Schefter's tongue is firmly planted in his cheek on this one, but it's an awfully misleading headline and, quite frankly, it's a bit of stupid blog post to begin with. I don't know how many blog posts Schefter needs to make to qualify for a full days wage, but this was pretty dumb. (Or an example of the sorts of posts we'd get if Schefter wasn't a league employee?)
