Former Patriots Employee Rips Team

Tom Casale used to work for the New England Patriots as a writer for Patriots Football Weekly. He recently left the organization to write under the moniker "Tommy Rider" for Pregame.com, a gambling website.

On his way out, Casale decided to set some bridges ablaze, by claiming that:

- He's heard rumors of a sex tape involving Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.
- Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi isn't the team leader people think he is.
- Former Patriots running back Corey Dillon is a "miserable piece of sh*t", who'll likely end up in jail at some point.

Most of his post is filled with positive comments, but those are quickly forgotten when you read items like this:

"A list of assholes would be Bruschi, Dillon, Willie McGinest, Pierre Woods, Mike Vrabel, Dan Koppen and Stephen Gostkowski".

It's been a long time since I believed that the players on my favorite football team were flawless human beings, and honestly, none of what Casale writes comes as a surprise to me. However, I am shocked that a guy who used to write for the team's official newspaper would be so willing to rip the organization on his way out.

Good luck finding a job writing about football once Pregame.com goes belly-up, Tom.

You'll need it.

Bucs' Garcia Injures Leg

Tampa Bay Buccaneers starting quarterback Jeff Garcia was carted off the field today with a leg injury.

Here's the image, courtesty of WDAE.com:

Here's how Rick Stroud of the St. Peterburg Times describes what happened:

"Quarterback Jeff Garcia was injured Thursday during a non-contact passing drill. The extent of his right leg injury is unknown.

Garcia seemed to be in some discomfort after rolling out and throwing a pass during a non-contact receiving drill.

He was carted off the field and limped precariously to the locker room."

Details of Garcia's aren't yet known, but if Garcia were to miss a few weeks, it could open the door for the Buccaneers to justify swinging a deal for Brett Favre.

John Lynch, Broncos to Part Ways

Safety John Lynch found himself at a crossroads when the 2007 season concluded. After 15 NFL seasons, that included nine Pro Bowls and a Super Bowl ring, few would have blamed Lynch for ending his career.

Lynch flirted with retirement, but was talked into returning for another season and signed a one-year contract worth $2 million dollars. A week later, the Broncos signed a pair of veteran safeties, Marlon McCree and Marquand Manuel, who Lynch would have to beat out to retain his starting job.

Less than a week into training camp, Lynch has asked the Broncos for his release, and the team is obliging.

The question this morning is: What will Lynch do now?

Retirement was an option in February, so it's certainly an option now. Lynch turns 37 in September and, with all due respect, his 9th Pro Bowl at the end of last season was earned more by reputation than actual performance. He's still pretty good against the run, but he's become a liability in pass coverage and it's hard for 37-year old two-down safeties to find work in today's NFL. (Roy Williams might find it's hard for 27-year old two-down safeties to find work in today's NFL, as well)

Another option for Lynch is to sit and wait. With the 80-man roster limits, teams just don't have room on their rosters for a 37-year old safety right now. In fact, Lynch may have to wait until after the 2008 season gets underway before finding another team, as teams may look to avoid having to guarantee his salary.

NFL News and Notes

New England Patriots safety Rodney Harrison is still a physical presence as he prepares for his 15th season roaming an NFL secondary. Hall of Fame Class of 2008 linebacker Andre Tippett visited Patriots training camp on Wednesday. Tippett will be inducted in Canton on Saturday.

Buffalo Bills Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters is holding out, so right tackle Langston Walker got some work at left tackle with the first-team offense yesterday. To improve their red-zone efficiency, the Bills will throw fades to 6-foot-6 rookie wide receiver James Hardy.

2008 could be a breakout year for New York Jets wide receiver Brad Smith. Veteran Jets tight end Bubba Franks has liked what he's seen from rookie tight end Dustin Keller. Disgruntled Jets tight end Chris Baker says he's ready to be removed from the PUP list. (Coincidence?)

The Miami Dolphins wide receivers are in favor of bringing Terry Glenn aboard. Tackling isn't a part of the Dolphins team drills.

Cincinnati Bengals running back Rudi Johnson hit the weights in the off-season and is up to 230 pounds. Bengals linebacker Ahmad Brooks was moved from the middle to the strong-side.

Cleveland Browns head coach Romeo Crennel says both Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn have things to improve upon. The Browns' motto: "The name on the door is Cleveland".

Injuries have pressed Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman Mike Kracalik into the starting left tackle position, but his past should help him deal with the scrutiny. Ravens fullback Le'Ron McClain hopes to have an expanded role in Cam Cameron's offense.

Pittsburgh Steelers free safety Ryan Clark is healthy and has the position locked down. Steelers wide receiver Limas Sweed suffered from cramps during yesterday's practice.

His teammates and coaches praise Houston Texans starting right guard Mike Brisiel's "grittiness". Actor Denzel Washington's son, John David, will work out for the Texans today.

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio blames the ridiculous contract demands of the top picks for the holdout of Derrick Harvey, which enters it's 6th day today. The Florida Times-Union has five questions for Jaguars safety Jamaal Fudge. Jaguars wide receiver Reggie Williams will have arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.

The abrupt retirement of Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock has left the team thin at the position. NBC's John Madden was at Colts camp on Wednesday, and he noticed that something, rather someone, was missing. Colts rookie wide receiver Pierre Garcon likes the Wii.

Tennessee Titans rookie defensive end Jason Jones will need to use his hands to be successful at the next level. Free agent quarterback Byron Leftwich will work out for the Titans on Thursday.

John Lynch's release means the Broncos are lacking in the leadership department. Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall is showing signs of maturity. Broncos defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban is moving inside to tackle to keep his roster spot. Broncos defensive end Jarvis Moss is struggling to add weight.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards hopes his players are on their best behavior during tonight's joint practice with the Minnesota Vikings. Former Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen is happy to be a Viking.

Will the San Diego Chargers offense miss Michael Turner? Chargers rookie cornerback Antoine Cason appears to have the nickel cornerback spot locked up. Another Chargers rookie cornerback, DeJuan Tribble, is having a good camp but probably won't make the final roster.

Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell was held out of practice yesterday with a sore right elbow. Raiders center Jake Grove says the starter's job is his to lose.

Jean-Jacques Taylor of the Dallas Morning News thinks Anthony Spencer is the key to the Cowboys defense. Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens and quarterback Tony Romo have a special relationship. Cowboys nose tackle Jay Ratliff got some work at defensive end.

New York Giants quarterback David Carr is attempting to revive his once promising career. Every report I've read out of Giants camp has praised the play of linebacker Matthias Kiwanuka, and Mike Garafolo's report this morning is no different.

Philadelphia Eagles rookie wide receiver DeSean Jackson was back at practice on Wednesday after missing two days with a hamstring injury. Eagles right tackle Jon Runyan criticized teammate Shawn Andrews for his continued absence. Eagles second-year running back Tony Hunt is battling for a roster spot.

Washington Redskins Hall of Fame cornerback Darrell Green reflects on his 20-year career. Redskins rookie quarterback Colt Brennan is no stranger to battling adversity.

Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times writes that nobody is winning the Chicago Bears quarterback competition. A rookie was at left tackle in the Bears' first-team offense, but it wasn't first-round pick Chris Williams who continues to be sidelined with a back injury.

Detroit Lions rookie linebacker Jordon Dizon messed up, but intercepted Jon Kitna anyways. The Lions may have to carry 10 defensive linemen into the regular season, writes Tom Kowalski.

The Green Bay Packers have discussed trading Brett Favre to a division rival. While exclusive rights free agent Ryan Grant awaits a new contract, second-year running back Brandon Jackson is gaining ground on him. The east side of Lambeau Field will receive a $25 million dollar renovation.

Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen is looking forward to seeing his former teammates and coaches, but has nothing to say to Chiefs GM Carl Peterson. Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards got on the field for the first time this summer. Edwards had been dealing with back spasms.

Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith is in no hurry to name a starting quarterback. Smith has been impressed with the play of the Falcons wide receivers. Quick question: How did Smith fight the gravitational pull surrounding defensive tackle/planetoid Grady Jackson?

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Muhsin Muhammed has been mentoring Dwayne Jarrett. Panthers fullback Brad Hoover didn't have a mentor, so he learned by watching film of other fullbacks, like Seattle's Mack Strong. Panthers defensive tackle Ian Scott sprained the MCL in his left knee and will miss a few weeks.

New Orleans Saints rookie defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis had a good first day. After ranking 30th in pass defense in 2007, the Saints brought a lot of cornerbacks to training camp this summer.

Rick Stroud of the St. Petersburg Times puts the spotlight on the young Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive line. They are:

LT - Donald Penn
LG - Arron Sears
C - Jeff Faine
RG - Davin Joseph
RT - Jeremy Trueblood

Average age: 24.8 years old

That offensive line is why the Buccanneers offense went 4-for-6 in a short-yardage drill yesterday in practice.

Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt understand that continuity on a coaching staff is important for a team to continue making progress. Cardinals wide receiver Steve Breaston is in the lead for the team's #3 WR role.

St. Louis Rams defensive end Leonard Little is planning on having a great year. Rams rookie offensive tackle John Greco is getting some work at right guard with the first-team offense.

San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Joe Staley will take part in full-team workouts today for the first time. Staley has been sidelined with cellulitis in his right foot. 49ers quarterback Shaun Hill rested his sore arm yesterday.

Adrian Wilson Out to Prove He's Still the Best

Arizona Cardinals safety Adrian Wilson is healthy and would like to be one of the highest paid safeties in the game.

Wilson has two years and $8.75 million dollars remaining on his current contract, and though he won't talk about money, he had to have noticed the 6-year, $39 million dollar contracts that Gibril Wilson got from Oakland and Ken Hamlin got from Dallas this off-season. Each of those deals contained $16 million in guaranteed money.

Unlike his more vocal teammates, Wilson isn't going to be lobbying for a new deal. He pays people to do that for him.

"I'm here to play football. I'm not worried about a contract," he said. "I'll let Eugene Parker (his agent) be the bad guy."

In 2006, Wilson was unquestionably the best safety in the NFL and a guy opposing offenses had to gameplan against. That season, Wilson notched 5 sacks, forced 4 fumbles, grabbed 4 interceptions, and scored on a pair of 99-yard touchdown returns. As the 2007 Pro Football Prospectus accurately noted, "If Wilson played in New York or Dallas, he'd be a perennial Pro Bowler".

Now that he's over his heel injury, Wilson will be out to prove he's still the best safety in the game.

(Reminder, Pro Football Prospectus 2008 is available now at your favorite local bookstore or from Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.)

NFL News and Notes

Seattle Seahawks defensive back Jordan Babineaux is an "all-purpose guy", according to teammate Deon Grant. Doug Farrar of Seahawks.net and Football Outsiders writes that Babineaux is an all-purpose guy off the field, as well. Seahawks cornerback Josh Wilson was the "Player of the Day" on Tuesday. Wilson was the 'Hawks top pick in 2007 and is reportedly having an impressive camp.

St. Louis Rams left tackle Orlando Pace is looking like his old self. Rams rookie wide receiver Donnie Avery has a cracked bone in his pelvis, but the injury isn't considered serious. The Rams had no contact with holdout running back Steven Jackson on Tuesday, pushing his fine total to $75,000.

Buccaneers quarterback Chris Simms could be headed to Big D. Buccaneers cornerback Torrie Cox was placed on IR for a torn ACL for the second straight year.

Minnesota Vikings fullback Thomas Tapeh is happy to be home. The Vikings will wear throwback uniforms for one game in 2008, though that game has not been identified.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says this is the best coaching staff he's ever had. One of Bill Parcells mistakes in Dallas: Bringing in former New York Giants players to talk to them. Yesterday's earthquake got the Cowboys attention.

The New York Giants are re-signing safety Craig Dahl. Giants rookie safety Kenny Phillips is showing the potential to be a heavy-hitter in the secondary.

Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Victor Abiamiri will miss all of training camp, and possibly the whole season, with a dislocated right wrist. Another Eagles defensive end, Chris Clemons, was taken to the hospital for heat-related problems. Washington Redskins cornerback Carlos Rogers feels no pain in his reconstructed right knee. Redskins linebacker H.B.Blades had surgery on his left knee and will miss four weeks.

New England Patriots safety Tank Williams has been lining up at safety and linebacker, so which is he? One condition of LaMont Jordan's release from Oakland was that he not sign with Denver or New England. Oops!

After two injury-plagued seasons, Buffalo Bills defensive tackle John McCargo is facing strike three. The Bills will wear throwback uniforms on September 21st against Oakland and San Francisco on November 30th.

Miami Dolphins tight end Anthony Fasano is excited about his opportunity in Miami. Dolphins quarterback Josh McCown appears jumped ahead of John Beck and Chad Henne.

New York Jets cornerback Justin Miller is enjoying training camp after his 2007 season ended with a torn ACL in Week 2. Jets left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson was rewarded for his work in the weight room this off-season by getting yesterday's morning practice off.

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh isn't thinking about his contract during training camp. Bengals defensive end Frostee Rucker is running with the first-team defense. Bengals cornerback Deltha O'Neal is sliding down the team's depth chart.

The Cleveland Browns have a trio of defenders from UNLV. When healthy, Browns tackle Ryan Tucker is regarded by position coach Steve Marshall as "the best we've got".

Baltimore Ravens right tackle Adam Terry sprained his left ankle, leaving the team thin at the tackle position. Ravens cornerback Chris McAlister is coming off a major injury for the first time in his career. Ravens rookie running back Ray Rice has been impressive thus far.

Pittsburgh Steelers punter Daniel Sepulveda tore the ACL in his right knee and will miss the 2008 season. Steelers rookie running back Rashard Mendenhall may be used as a kick returner.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are confident Dennis Norman can handle the starting center job. Jaguars wide receiver Reggie Williams appeared to reinjure his right knee was carted off the field on Tuesday. Jaguars cornerback Drayton Florence feels at home.

Indianapolis Colts running back Joseph Addai wants to remain consistent from start to finish in 2008. Colts second-year defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock has retired. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning is in Terre Haute.

Three Players Still Holding Out

The seventh day of New Orleans Saints training camp gets underway today, and 1st round pick Sedrick Ellis is still not an official member of the team.

Mike Triplett of the Times-Picayune suggests that Ellis' camp may be waiting for Derrick Harvey, picked one spot behind Ellis, to sign his contract so that they can improve their own negotiating position. However, there are no signs Harvey is closer to a contract, and his holdout is expected to continue through a 4th day.

Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Keith Rivers missed the first two practices, which head coach Marvin Lewis thinks is a shame. Rivers is reportedly close by and can be at camp once a deal is reached.

Looking at the contract sizes of the #6 and #10 picks of the first round, it's pretty clear why Ellis, Harvey and Rivers haven't signed.

6. NY Jets - DE, Vernon Gholston - 5 years, $50M ($21M guaranteed)
7. New Orleans - DT, Sedrick Ellis
8. Jacksonville - DE, Derrick Harvey
9. Cincinnati - LB, Keith Rivers
10. New England - LB, Jerod Mayo - 5 years, $18.9M ($13.8M guaranteed)

A $31.1 million dollar gap in "total contract value" leaves a lot of room for agents like Eugene Parker (Ellis), Ken Kremer (Harvey) and David Dunn (Rivers) to work with.

NFL News and Notes

Bill Belichick was a long-time proponent of putting a radio transmitter inside the helmet of the defender, and the New England Patriots were one of the 25 teams to vote for the new rule allowing it. Now that it's here, Belichick acknowledged that
the team is still going to employ hand signals. The Patriots like the versatility of wide receiver Jabar Gaffney.

Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch won't be disciplined by the NFL for his hit-and-run arrest this off-season. The Bills are tailoring their defensive scheme to fit what made Marcus Stroud so successful in Jacksonville. Bills special teams coach Bobby April is putting his punt returners through an interesting drill.

Miami Dolphins linebackers Reggie Torbor and Akin Ayodele are vying for the same starting job. Dolphins tackle Vernon Carey won't get a new contract until after 2008. Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter practiced for the first time on Monday.

The New York Jets had an off-day yesterday. Jets head coach Eric Mangini calls defensive end Shaun Ellis the "E.F. Hutton of the locker room".

Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Antwan Odom sprained his foot. Bengals running back Kenny Irons cleared waivers and was placed on the team's "Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform" list.

Cleveland Browns running back Jamal Lewis is running to accomplish the long-term goals he want to reach when he entered the league. Browns linebacker Andra Davis is trying to stick around for the good times in Cleveland.

At times, the Baltimore Ravens revamped offensive line "doesn't know where it's going", writes Mike Preston of the Baltimore Sun. The projected starters for the Ravens are:

LT - Jared Gaither
LG - Ben Grubbs
C - Jason Brown
RG - Marshal Yanda
RT - Adam Terry

Average age of this group: 23.8 years.

Ravens linebacker Bart Scott has gone from mad to furious.

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu has an injured hamstring. The key to the Steelers success this season will be Ben Roethlisberger. Veteran Steelers tackle Trai Essex was working at left guard with the first-team when camp opened.

Houston Texans running back Chris Brown is hoping to put his injury-plagued past behind him, though he did miss practice on Monday after cramping up. Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said that starting quarterback Matt Schaub knows he's being pushed by Sage Rosenfels, who went 3-1 as a starter in 2007, every day.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard and tight end Marcedes Lewis made an instant connection two years ago. Jaguars center Brad Meester will miss time with a biceps injury.

Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock hasn't reported to training camp. Colts quarterback Jim Sorgi is going to play a lot in the pre-season opener against Washington on Sunday.

There's a pretty good chance "Chris" will be retuning kicks for the Tennessee Titans this season. Titans safety Michael Griffin snared two interceptions in Monday's afternoon practice.

A dark cloud is hanging over Denver Broncos training camp, and Roger Goodell can clear it up by making a decision on what to do with Brandon Marshall. CompleteColorado.com had some details of the incidents Marshall has been involved in. Broncos safety Hamza Abdullah is no longer on the special teams units. A trio of Broncos, D.J.Williams, Boss Bailey and Selvin Young, were late for practice after being administered steroid tests.

Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson will be expected to carry a heavy load this season. The only thing that will keep Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez from coming back next year is the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl this season.

San Diego Chargers cornerback Antonio Cromartie on his teammate, safety Eric Weddle: “He doesn't look like a football player. He belongs on '90210.' ” Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson could be poised for a breakout season.

Oakland Raiders wide receiver Ronald Curry spent the off-season in the weight room. Raiders backup offensive lineman Mark Wilson broke his leg on Sunday.

The Dallas Cowboys defensive linemen are young and unsung. The Cowboys aren't concerned with cornerback Terrence Newman's strained left groin. Adam Jones and Patrick Crayton played what sounds like an interesting game during punt drills. An impressive one, too.

New York Giants safety Sammy Knight is studying the team's media guide to learn more about his teammates. Giants tackle Shane Olivea is starting over.

Yesterday was the first of Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid's "30-plus" practices, where players over 30 get the morning practice off every third day of training camp. Reid's idea gives older players a rest, and younger players more reps. One snag in the Eagles' contract renegotiations with Brian Westbrook is that they mutually agreed to convert a roster bonus to a signing bonus, thereby limiting how they can adjust his contract for a period of 12 months.

Injuries to rookie wide receivers Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas will give veteran Burl Toler more playing time in Sunday's pre-season game against Indianapolis. Redskins backup quarterback Todd Collins is struggling to learn the West Coast offense.

Chicago Bears rookie left tackle Chris Williams isn't going to rush his return from a back injury. The Bears offense is using more two-tight end sets.

Detroit Lions defensive tackle Chuck Darby is reunited with Rod Marinelli, the coach who gave him his chance in the NFL. Marinelli likes what he sees from rookie defensive end Cliff Avril.

"I know I will be scrutinized a ton, but that's what comes with being a quarterback in this league." - Aaron Rodgers after his first day of training camp as the starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. One of the perceived strengths of the Packers defense is quickly deteriorating into one of its weaknesses. Defensive tackle Ryan Pickett has a strained hamstring and second-year man Justin Harrell admitted that he could have season-ending back surgery. With Johnny Jolly facing a suspension, and Corey Williams shipped off to Cleveland, the Packers could be very thin on their interior line.

The battle for the #3 quarterback job in Minnesota is downright gentlemanly. The Vikings put on pads for the first time on Monday and safety Madieu Williams jacked up Chester Taylor.

With Bobby Petrino safely in Arkansas, the Atlanta Falcons signed massive defensive tackle Grady Jackson to a one-year contract. Falcons cornerback Von Hutchins was placed on injured reserve after undergoing surgery to repair a Lisfranc fracture on his foot. Falcons rookie wide receiver Harry Douglas took a swing at safety Lawyer Milloy during practice on Monday.

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith wants to finish his career as one of the legendary wide receivers. Smith, D.J. Hackett, Nick Goings and Jonathan Stewart sat out Monday night's practice.

New Orleans Saints defensive end Charles Grant has a lot weighing on his mind this summer. Saints cornerback Mike McKenzie is ahead of schedule in his rehab from surgery to repair a torn ACL.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jeff Garcia declared himself the team's starting quarterback. After spending 2007 on his couch, Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Bryant is trying to revive his once promising career. Buccaneers defensive end Gaines Adams is much more comfortable in his second season.

Arizona Cardinals running back Edgerrin James thinks the "running backs fade when they turn 30" thing is a cliche. (He's right. Just ask Shaun Alexander.) The Cardinals have sold out their October 12th game against Dallas, which required fans seeking single-game tickets to also purchase tickets to the August 7th pre-season game against New Orleans.

Seattle Seahawks running back Julius Jones is no stranger to following successful running backs. Jerry Brewer of the Seattle Times calls Seahawks rookie defensive end Lawrence Jackson "Socrates in shoulder pads".

St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson is reportedly seeking $20 million in guaranteed money as part of his contract extension. Jackson's holdout, which enters its fifth day today, is providing Brian Leonard and Antonio Pittman with an opportunity to get some reps with the first-team offense.

San Francisco 49ers running back Michael Robinson had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee on Monday. Former Raiders and current 49ers tackle Barry Sims is happy to be on the other side of the bay.

Afternoon NFL Roundup - July 28th, 2008

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick discussed the defensive headset, the Patriots' cornerback position and his good friend Jon Bon Jovi
after this morning's practice.

Cleveland Browns tight end Sergeant Winslow sat out this morning's practice.

Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Antwan Odom was on crutches after injuring his left ankle.

Tennessee Titans special teams coach Alan Lowry wants to average 10 yards per punt return and an average starting position of the 30-yard line after kick returns. The tight ends in Tennessee are looking good.

The Panthers gave 35-year old wide receiver Muhsin Muhammed the morning off. Panthers left tackle Jordan Gross thinks Julius Peppers is in for a big year.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jeff Garcia: "I was the starting quarterback and I am the starting quarterback". Buccaneers wide receiver Joey Galloway has a strained groin.

New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress discusses his ankle injury, which isn't related to the ankle injury he played through all of last season.

Washington Redskins backup quarterback Todd Collins did not look sharp in practice this morning.

In Philadelphia, The Eagletarian reports that Brian Westbrook wants a new deal before the season starts, DeSean Jackson tweaked a hammy and Victor Abiamiri may be out awhile after dislocating a bone in his wrist.

Cheech & Chong arrived at Cowboys training camp.

One goal of this blog is for it to be impossible to determine if I have a favorite football team or not. I do, but I make a concerted effort to not show it. The same cannot be said for Tim McMahon of the Dallas Morning News, who posted an item on their blog this morning entitled "Wah! Giants whining again".

Greg Bedard filed a report on the first practice of Green Bay Packers training camp.

The Chicago Bears want to see less of running back Kevin Jones, asking the veteran to drop 10 pounds.

Four days into St. Louis Rams training camp, the injuries are starting to add up. Cornerback Fakhir Brown (shoulder) is out 2-3 weeks, rookie defensive tackle Josh Thompson (foot) is out a month, and defensive end Victor Adeyanju (broken finger) is out 2-4 weeks. Reinforcements are headed to Mequon.

San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Joe Staley (infected foot) hopes to do some drills tomorrow.

Wisconsin Is Home to Holdout Running Backs

Wisconsin is known for many things. Cheese, beer, lighthouses, some of the nicest people on the planet, etc...The list goes on and on.

It's also the unofficial running back holdout capital of the NFL.

Three teams currently hold their training camp in Wisconsin (down from five teams back in the 90s), and in the last two seasons, each team has opened camp without their top running back.

Last year, Larry Johnson was absent when the Kansas City Chiefs opened camp in River Falls.

This summer, St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson has amassed over $45,000 in fines as the Rams practice in Mequon without him. And when the Packers hit the field to begin training camp today in De Pere, they'll be without Ryan Grant.

As an exclusive rights free agent, Grant is immune to the $15K+ in daily fines for not reporting. It's a good thing, too, since negotiations haven't progressed well in recent days. In fact, they appear to be turning downright ugly.

According to Alan Herman, Grant's agent, the Packers are only offering $1.75 million in guaranteed money. Herman called that offer a "punch in the face".

However, as an exclusive rights free agent, Grant essentially has zero leverage. He can't play for another team, and with just 7 starts and 956 yards, he doesn't have the lengthy resume to be overly demaning in contract talks.

His best bet might be to take a one or two-year deal, make more than the $370K tender, and prove over a 16-game season that he's worth a big money contract.

NFL News and Notes

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam Jones is purposely going up against Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton, Dallas' starting receivers,
in one-on-one drills. Cowboys linebacker Bobby Carpenter is trying to rebuild his reputation. Good news, Cowboys fans: According to her creepily involved father, Jessica Simpson will arrive in Oxnard, CA shortly.

New York Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce is a natural leader.

The Philadelphia Eagles linebackers are focused on creating turnovers. The agent for Eagles' MIA Pro Bowl guard Shawn Andrews won't disclose why Andrews is not in camp, which is giving third-year guard Max Jean-Gilles an opportunity to get more reps.

Washington Redskins linebacker London Fletcher instantly took on a leadership role when he arrived last season. Week One of the Jim Zorn Era is in the books.

Within Brad Biggs' Chicago Bears notebook in the Chicago Sun-Times, the Bears had to decide between Lance Briggs and Bernard Berrian this off-season. Rookie left tackle Chris Williams remains sidelined with a back injury. Bears return specialist/wide receiver Devin Hester's contract extension is really worth about $32 million dollars.

Detroit Lions vice chairman Bill Ford Jr. feels good about his team's coach. Lions linebacker Ernie Sims landed awkwardly on his right knee in Sunday's morning practice and skipped the afternoon session as a precaution.

Green Bay Packers linebackers coach Winston Moss believes the Packers linebackers are one of the best groups in the NFL.

Minnesota Vikings left tackle Bryant McKinnie and defensive Jared Allen are mutually benefiting from their daily training camp battle. The Vikings will hold their first full-pad workout this morning.

All Mark Bradley is saying is give Matt Ryan a chance. Atlanta Falcons cornerback Von Hutchins has a sprained left foot. Falcons wide receiver Joe Horn would still like to be traded.

Carolina Panthers rookie safety Charles Godfrey is the front-runner for the team's starting strong safety job, and he's asking questions of anyone he thinks can help him. Panthers rookie running back Jonathan Stewart has a new tutor and an impressive stiff-arm.

New Orleans Saints second-year wide receiver Robert Meachem could press for playing time this year. Saints rookie defensive tackle DeMario Pressley suffered a fractured foot and was placed on injured reserve.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jeff Garcia addressed the rumors about Brett Favre going to Tampa Bay. Buccaneers thirty-six year old linebacker Derrick Brooks thinks he's still got it. Buccaneers cornerback Ronde Barber thinks the Bucs secondary is as talented and deep as it's ever been.

Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic writes that while the Arizona Cardinals and Anquan Boldin appear headed for a nasty split, there are ways to mend the relationship. Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner took snaps with the first-team offense on Sunday, but Matt Leinart remains the starter.
