As informative as www.profootballtalk.com can be at times, there are instances where it's creator and editor-in-chief Mike Florio gets on a high horse he simply cannot come down from.
Case in point: Terry Bradshaw's admission that he used steroids when he played.
Florio writes: "Third (okay, we’ve got three things to say), it’s amazing to us how quickly the media has accepted Bradshaw’s self-serving “clarification” and moved on. Yeah, he’s a Hall of Famer and, by all appearances, a great guy. But so what? Do only assholes use steroids? If the media has any interest in developing a better understanding of precisely how prevalent the use of these compounds was in years before they were banned and/or illegal, admissions from key players of that era can’t be pooh-poohed when the player in question tries to talk his way out of the poo-poo into which he inadvertently buried his foot."
There could be several reasons why the MSM has accepted Bradshaw's explanation and haven't shared Florio's shock and disbelief:
1. Maybe they think Terry Bradshaw is dead.
2. Maybe Bradshaw's "self-serving clarification" is also an accurate clarification. Steroids were approved by the FDA and available via a doctor's prescription.
3. Bradshaw has been retired for 25 years and his admitted steroid use took place nearly 30 years ago when steroids were neither against NFL rules or were against United States law.
Since the 70s, much has been made known about the dangers of steroid use, including some pretty detailed stories about just how prevalant steroid use was in the NFL during that decade. That information has been used, by both the NFL and the NFLPA, to ban anabolic steroids and establish strict testing programs to detect it's use and punish the offenders.
4. We already know, thanks to former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker and current St. Louis Rams defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, that the Steelers of the 1970s pioneered steroid use in the NFL. Bradshaw was with the Steelers from 1970-1983, so you do the math.
Look, if Bradshaw admitted that he did rails off Loni Anderson's ass while on the set of Cannonball Run, that'd be newsworthy. A Hall of Fame quarterback, who openly jokes about his own dumbness, admitting that he used doctor-prescribed steroids before they were against league rules or the law?
Yawn.

- $13.5 million dollar signing bonus
- $17 million dollars in total guaranteed money.

Giants Had a Busy Day
New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese was a busy man on Tuesday.
First, right guard Chris Snee agreed to a six-year contract extension, and then Reese locked up three more draft picks to contracts.
Snee, whose father-in-law is head coach Tom Coughlin, is now under contract through 2014. Terms of his contracts are unknown at this time, but it should be interesting to see what sort of reaction Plaxico Burress and Osi Umenyiora will have to news that the coach's son-in-law received a contract extension before they did.
The rookies agreeing to contracts today include fourth-round linebacker Bryan Kehl (BYU), fifth-round linebacker Jonathan Goff (Vanderbilt) and sixth-round quarterback Andre Woodson (Kentucky). Sixth-round defensive end Robert Henderson had previously agreed on a contract, leaving the Giants with just three unsigned draft picks (Kenny Phillips, Terrell Thomas and Mario Manningham).

(In Other DWI News) Dwayne Jarrett Pleads Guilty
Carolina Panthers second-year wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett plead guilty to DWI charges on Monday, moments before his case was scheduled to go to trial.
Jarrett was arrested on March 11th in Mint Hill, North Carolina, and registered a BAC of .12, above North Carolina's legal limit, and the standard limit just about everywhere, of .08.
In addition to entering the NFL's substance abuse program, Jarrett has surrendered his driver's license, will perform 24 hours of community service and was ordered to pay $420 in court costs.
"This is a thing that happened and you learn from your mistakes," Jarrett said. "You always have to take the right steps in everything you do. That's life in general. I took full responsibility for what happened. I'm here in court. Everything worked out."
Jarrett is expected to compete this summer with veterans Muhsin Muhammed and D.J. Hackett for the Panthers' starting wide receiver position opposite Steve Smith.

Lions' Dizon Busted Before Draft
Detroit Lions second-round linebacker Jordon Dizon was arrested on April 20th, six days before the 2008 NFL Draft, on suspicion of drunk driving, driving the wrong way on a one-way street and failure to provide insurance.
Dizon has plead not guilty to the charges, and the Boulder Daily Camera reports that BAC was 0.097, above Colorado's legal limit of .08.
Dizon is apologetic about the incident: “I was very polite to the officer. I did everything he asked me to and I acted like a man. It’s a bad situation and I’m sorry that it happened.”
Despite the arrest occurring before he entered the NFL, he would still be subject to discipline under the NFL's Personal Conduct policy. For a first offense, it's possible that he could be fined 1/17th of his 2008 salary, which would likely amount to $17,352,94.

Two Charged in Attempted Burglary of Noah Herron's Home
Last month, Green Bay Packers running back Noah Herron was upstairs in the bedroom of his Howard, Wisconsin home when he heard his doorbell ring twice. Herron wasn't expecting anyone, so he ignored it.
Herron heard someone on his deck, so he called the police. Then he heard glass break, and he called police again. When Herron heard someone walking up his stairs, he armed himself with a bed post and hid behind a door.
One man entered Herron's bedroom and pocketed some cash before calling downstairs to his accomplice. When the second man entered Herron's bedroom, the running back used the bedpost to strike the intruder twice in the head.
Yesterday, the two men, 31-year old Yeshua Tate and 20-year old Joel Mullin-Romo, were charged with two counts of being party to burglary.
A key in Tate's pocket was to a nearby SUV, which contained three flat-screen televisions from a nearby home. If convicted, Tate faces 25 years in prison.

Titans Could Honor Haynesworth's Request
Tennessee Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt indicated on Monday that the team may be willing to honor franchised defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth's request that he not be franchised again in 2009 in exchange for the All-Pro defensive tackle signing the one-year tender and reporting to training camp on time.
Reinfeldt, who joined the Titans after years working in the Seattle Seahawks front office, has some familiarity with the franchise tag (Walter Jones played under the franchise tag from 2002-2004), as well as with agreements like the one Haynesworth is proposing. Reinfeldt was still with the Seahawks in 2005 when Shaun Alexander and the team reached a similar arrangement. Alexander was named the NFL's Most Valuable Player during a season where the Seahawks reached the Super Bowl.
The Titans have until July 15th to reach a long-term agreement with Haynesworth.

Madden '09 Screenshot of Qwest Field
For all you gamers out there, Operations Sports has stadium screenshots for EA Sports Madden '09.
Instead of point out the deficiencies in all 32 stadiums, I'm going to turn my attention to the image they used for Qwest Field.
As you can see, it's a beautiful, crisp image of the stadium. There's just one minor problem with it:
Qwest Field is not located directly next to the Space Needle. The Space Needle isn't located south of the downtown, either.
In fact, you can only see the top of the Space Needle from Qwest Field, due to the number of downtown skyscrapers that separate the Space Needle (located in Seattle center) and Qwest Field (located in the SoDo).
Since the Space Needle is well north of Qwest Field, this would appear to be an image of the SW Gate of Qwest Field, which has neither a tailgating area nor that much glass. It's a rather narrow road, with a series of building directly opposite the stadium. The Pro Shop is on that side of the building, and there are some sculptures done by local artists. It's actually really nice, though admittedly not something that would appeal to gamers who have never visited the stadium.
During a quick Google image search for Qwest Field, I stumbled across the image to the right.
Gee, that looks almost exactly like the one EA Sports used in Madden '09, doesn't it? Only difference is that EA decided to either put the Space Needle where Safeco Field is, or to put Qwest Field north of downtown.
Hey, they almost had it right.
To be fair, I don't really consider this to be a major gaffe. The introduction is a minor part of the game, which most people ignore or skip altogether.
And I can understand EA's rationale. Why not put the building most associated with the city of Seattle into the introduction, even if it makes no geographical sense to anyone even slightly familiar with the city? External images of Qwest Field aren't real conducive to incorporating recognizable Seattle landmarks with the stadium itself. I'm sure few would recognize Smith Tower or the Columbia Tower, although the point could be made that they could've just kept the original photo with Safeco Field in the background and called it a day.
Madden '09 is set to be released on August 12th, 2008.

Giants' Bradshaw In Jail
New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw is in jail because of an incident that occurred prior to him joining the team.
While matriculating at the University of Virginia and then Marshall University, Bradshaw was arrested for underage alcohol possession and resisting arrest in 2004, and in 2006, was arrested and charged with petty larceny.
Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger reports that Giants' GM Jerry Reese has referred to Bradshaw as a player he'd keep on a "short leash". Bradshaw's current incarceration isn't related to a new incident, however, any time a player is behind bars places his future status with the team in jeopardy.
The Giants have release the following statement:
"We are aware of the situation and have been in contact with Ahamd's legal representative. This situation is not the result of any recent incident. It stems from an issue that occurred prior to Ahmad being drafted by the Giants. Beyond that, we have no further comment."

Specter Won't Pursue SpyGate
It's been reported all over, but Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) will not pursue Congressional hearings on the videotaping procedures by the New England Patriots, or the NFL's investigation into that matter.
"I'm not going to call for hearings, because the mood is not right and we've got too many other bigger problems to deal with," Specter told the Philadelphia Daily News editorial board.
This officially closes the door on the SpyGate matter, as the league has no intention of asking for an independent investigation into the matter.
Specter now plans to look into the matter of publicly-financed public stadiums.

Albert Haynesworth Reaches Out
Franchised Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth has a compromise for the Titans: He'll show up for training camp if the team agrees to not place the franchise tag on him in 2009.
"We have spoken several times in the past few weeks and our conversations have recently focused on an idea that I proposed in March which would require Albert to sign the tender but in return the Titans would agree not to use the franchise tag on him again next year," Haynesworth's agent Chad Speck wrote in an e-mail to The Tennessean.
By signing the one-year tender, Haynesworth would be guaranteed the $7.25 million dollar salary in 2008, but would have no guarantees beyond this season. By agreeing to report to training camp without a long-term deal, Haynesworth would be assuming the injury risk. In return, Haynesworth would be granted free agency in 2009.
As Speck notes, there is a precedent for this sort of deal. Shaun Alexander, Nate Clements, Asante Samuel and Lance Briggs reached similar agreements with their teams after being designated as a franchise player. Two of the four, Alexander and Briggs, re-signed with their original teams.

Javon Walker Issues Statement
Quasi-reputable website "TheDirty.com" claims to be close friends of Javon Walker, and they spoke to Walker earlier this evening.
This is what Walker had to say:
“I was just back at my room and at about 5:30 in the morning, I got a knock at the door, I opened it and 3 guys with guns were there, they cracked me in the head a few times knocking me unconcious. They then robbed me of everything I had- my watch- money- everything! Somehow they got me to the car and dropped me off in the street. That’s what happened.”
TheDirty.com also refutes the Internet rumor that former boxer Floyd Mayweather was involved in the attack, and they go to great lengths to say that Walker is a generous man who is "focussed (sic) and dedicated to his sport".
I won't get into whether or not Walker is "focussed" on his sport. This incident happened on Walker's free time, during one of the few points in the NFL calender year that players have time to themselves.
However, Walker, perhaps more so than any professional athlete alive today, should know that athletes are often targeted by thugs and criminals. (We're all painfully familiar with how Darrent Williams died in Walker's arms, right?) And when you're spraying champagne in a Las Vegas nightclub in the early morning hours, and wearing flashy bling, you're potentially putting yourself in a position where someone might decide to challenge you.
Unlike some other football sites, I'm not going to claim that all jokes about Walker are "fair game" because he offered a fairly weak and likely fictitious account of what happened yesterday morning. The bottom-line here, and something everyone should remember, is that Walker is the victim of a violent crime and, as of this moment, his assailants are at-large.

Tatupu Pleads "Not Guilty"
Seattle Seahawks middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu plead "not guilty" today to a driving under the influence charge in Kirkland Municipal Court.
Tatupu was arrested on May 10th after submitting to field sobriety tests and declining to take a portable breathalyzer test. Tatupu's BAC during tests administered at Kirkland police headquarters measured at 0.155 and 0.158, which is above the legal limit (0.08) in Washington state.
A pre-trial hearing will be held on July 7th, and Tatupu's attorney John Fox continues to work with the prosecutor to resolve the case.
"This is done to preserve the status quo and to leave all of our options open," Fox said. "Between now and the pretrial conference, we intend to examine all of the legal and factual issues in this case. We've already begun that process. We also intend to move forward towards a positive resolution."

Case Against Rocky Bernard Dismissed
The domestic violence case against Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Rocky Bernard has been dismissed.
Bernard will have to comply with three conditions over the next two years in order for the charges to be dimissed:
1. Comply with a no-contact order with the victim.
2. Undergoes domestic violence treatment.
3. No violations of the law over a 24-month period.
"This represents his taking responsibility for what happened, and taking steps to make sure it never happens again," said defense attorney John Scott. "He really wants to put this behind him at this time."

Texans to Sign Roosevelt Colvin
The Houston Texans are expected to announce the signing today of free agent outside linebacker Roosevelt Colvin.
After entering the league with the Chicago Bears, Colvin, 30, spent five seasons with the New England Patriots. He earned two Super Bowl rings with the Patriots, however, Colvin seriously injured his hip early in the 2003 season and didn't crack the starting lineup until 2005. His 2007 season ended in November, when he was placed on injured reserve.
Colvin, who has passed his physical with the Texans, is expected to boost the Texans' pass rush. In his 9-year career, Colvin has 52.5 career sacks (26.5 with NE, 26.0 with Chicago).

Bruce Allen Takes Aim at Chris Simms' "PR Stunt"
Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Bruce Allen thinks quarterback Chris Simms got some bad advice from his agents.
"I think his advisers pulled a PR stunt," Allen said. "I don't think it portrays Chris well. That's not the Chris I've talked to on the phone. But I can't worry about that. We have too many players who are trying to help this team win and those are the players we're going to focus on."
I'm sure Allen will have a different take on Simms' comments, but I'm having a hard time seeing how they portray Simms in a negative light. Simms praised the Buccaneers front office, the city of Tampa and the Buccaneers fans.
But between his deteriorating relationship with Jon Gruden and the amount of quarterbacks on the Buccaneers roster, it's clear to everyone that Simms isn't in the short or long-term plans in Tampa, and that he'd like the opportunity to go elsewhere for a chance to get playing time.
Gruden had this to say on Friday night:
"I like Chris Simms. I don't necessarily agree with everything he said. But I'm going to coach the quarterbacks who are here. I am really excited about the guys who are here. I wish Chris and his situation well. But that's the last I'll address it. He made his statements and unfortunately that's all I can say. I like Jeff Garcia and I prefer talking about him, Brian Griese and Luke McCown at this point."
With Josh Johnson on-board, it's likely that Simms will be released at some point this summer. I just wonder if the Bucs will grant Simms his freedom in time to get a real shot at an NFL job during training camp.

Playing for the Denver Broncos is "a running back's dream", says Michael Pittman.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Phillip Buchanan is helping rookie cornerback Aqib Talib adjust to the NFL. Buccaneers running back Earnest Graham is expected to be at the team's mandatory mini-camp next week.
Scott Fowler of the Charlotte Observer thinks the Carolina Panthers are moving Jordan Gross to left tackle because they don't want to play a rookie on the left side this year.
The Atlanta Falcons, meanwhile, could be starting a rookie at left tackle this year. How will some of the Falcons be spending Father's Day?

* Michael Strahan retired.
* Osi Umenyiora wants more money.
* Jeremy Shockey showed up to the mandatory mini-camp, but won't practice.
* Ditto for Plaxico Burress.
* Someone even stole the Super Bowl rings that were intended to go to the Giants front office and support staff.
And on Thursday, team captain Shaun O'Hara had some words for the malcontents on the Giants roster.
"You're either with us," O'Hara said, "or you're against us."
After winning a Super Bowl, it's natural for players to want to increase their own situations. O'Hara, however, doesn't agree with how Burress is going about it.
"I think there's a right way to do things," O'Hara said. "I've always felt that as a player, you go out there, you put your best foot forward and as long as you're giving 100% effort every time, you'll be taken care of."
O'Hara also indicated that, training camp holdouts or not, the Giants will be fine.
"I think we proved it last year that the team-first concept overcomes everything," O'Hara said. "Whether players like it or not, the team is going to move forward. You're either with us or you're against us. I think the players are doing a good job of focusing on their daily tasks and their jobs. As long as we all continue to do that, this team will succeed."
