Harrison Releases Statement

Rodney Harrison released a statement during a conference call with Boston area reporters. The text below is from the Boston Herald's "Point After" blog entry by Albert Breer.

“I’m basically here to let you all know that tomorrow the commissioner will annouce that I’ve been suspended by the NFL for violating the league policy on substance abuse. That suspension will be for four games. I want to make it clear that not once did I use steroids. I did admit to the commissioner that I did in fact use a banned substance. My purpose was never to gain a competitive edge. Rather, my use was totally for the purpose of accelerating the healing process from injuries I sustained playing football.

“I haven’t made excuses, nor will I make excuses. I made a mistake and I’m very sorry for that. I understand that I’m a role model to high schools, colleges, young kids. I don’t condone my decision, my behavior. I’m very, very embarrassed by it. I’m disappointed in myself. And to any young person, any high schooler, any college athlete, I sent the wrong message with my actions and I would want to be the example to them to never jeopardize what they believe in, never jeopardize their health. And they always have to love themselves.

“At this time, because I know you have a million questions for me, this is a mistake that I’ve done, nothing that my teammates were involved in, and I ask at this time that the respect of my teammates not be violated. This is something that Rodney Harrison did, Rodney Harrison did alone. My teammates didn’t do it. So as they’re preparing for the Jets and the San Diego game and Cincinnati and those games after that, I would ask that you give them the respect not to badger them with questions. Because they don’t have any information dealing with it, and neither does my family. I have kids, I have a wife and I’d ask for the respect for my family. This is something that I did and they shouldn’t have to go through.

“I will be absent from the team for the next four weeks, that’s the penalty I have incurred, after which I intend to return and help this team in any capacity I can to get back to winning the championship. It’s been a tough time for me, the last week or two, even before this. I’ve apologized to my family, which has supported me, to my friends. And I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to my teammates. Like I said before, they were never involved in this. This is something I did and I apologize to them, because this is the last thing we need going into the regular season. I should have never done this to them.

“I apologize to the entire New England Patriots organization and the fans that have supported me so faithfully over the past five seasons here. Through Super Bowls, through injury, they have supported me, I definitely, definitely appreciate it.”

NFL to Suspend Patriots Safety Rodney Harrison

Chris Mortensen of ESPN is reporting that New England Patriots veteran safety Rodney Harrison has been suspended for four games for violating the NFL's steroids policy.

Harrison admitted to federal investigators that he obtained HGH, which is banned by the NFL.

Strahan to Report on Monday

Adam Schefter of the NFL Network is reporting that New York Giants DE Michael Strahan will report to the Giants on Monday.

Strahan has missed all of training camp while he "contemplated retirement".

Jacksonville to Release QB Leftwich

1010XL in Jacksonville is reporting that at a 5:30pm news conference, the Jacksonville Jaguars will announce their intentions to release or trade QB Byron Leftwich, the team's 1st round draft pick in 2003.

This would leave David Garrard as the logical choice to start, with nearby Atlanta an obvious landing spot for Leftwich. Another team who could be interested in Leftwich are the Seattle Seahawks, who are in the market for a veteran backup QB who would free Seneca Wallace up to do more things in the offense and on special teams.

Rams Waive Eleven

The St. Louis Rams have waived 11 players, according to the team's official website. The unlucky 11 are:

CB - Josh Lay
DT - Tim Sandidge
LB - Jamel Brooks
TE - Mark Anelli
WR - Shaine Smith
WR - Fred Gibson
OT - Drew Strojny
OT - Ken Shackleford
K - Kevin Lovell
S - Andre Kirkland
RB - JD Washington

The Rams have until 4pm ET on Saturday to trim another 11 names from their roster.

Final Notes of the Preseason

The Seahawks win may have come at a very steep price. No team wants to hear "knee injury" and "appears to be rather serious" in the same sentence and they definitely don't want to hear it about the one player who is so vital to your defense's ability to stop the run.

Danny O'Neil of the Seattle Times has a good piece on the emotional aspect of Marcus Tubbs' injury.

It may be too late for Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell to help the team this year.

Raiders QBs Daunte Culpepper and Josh McCown turned in their final auditions on Thursday night.

The battle for the 4th running back on the Buffalo Bills is intense. (My vote is for Fred Jackson, who I think has shown good football instincts and has natural play-making ability.)

The recommendation is for Lions RB Kevin Jones to start the season in the PUP list.

The Detroit Free Press' Michael Rosenberg asks "Where is that offense Lions are raving about?"

Eagles QB AJ Feeley broke a bone in his non-throwing hand; Eagles KR Jeremy Bloom isn't wowing the Philly Phaithful.

Dave Hutchinson of the Star-Ledger writes that Jets rookie left guard Jacob Bender was dominant last night, but quickly adds some perspective.

A pair of Jets on the bubble helped their cause last night.

The return of Patriots CB Asante Samuel has allowed rookie 1st round pick Brandon Meriweather to return to his more natural safety position.

Auditions are over in New England.

Giants TE Jeremy Shockey is thankful he didn't get hurt this summer.

Within Arthur Staples' notebook
in Newsday, we learn that Michael Strahan is maintaining radio silence and LB Mathias Kiwanuka is experiencing growing pains at his new position.

Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio took a cue from Bill Belichick.

It was all about the fringe players in Jacksonville last night, and it sounds like Jacksonville native CB Dee Webb probably won't make the final roster.

According to Jason La Canfora of the Washington Post, the Seattle Seahawks inquired about Redskins QB Mark Brunell.

The Redskins got what they wanted out of Thursday night's preseason finale.

Titans RB LenDale White made a push for the starting job.

Injuries could mean the Packers starting running back will be "the last man standing".

Green Bay's special teams aren't too special.

QB Kelly Holcomb made his Vikings debut in the second half.

There are still no answers on who will start on the right side of the Vikings offensive line.

The Dallas Morning News staff has a big notebook which reveals that Tony Romo might not get a new contract before the season, and much more.

It's been 9 years since Dallas had a quality kicker, and rookie Mason Crosby could change that.

WR Josh Cribbs will return punts for the Cleveland Browns in 2007.

The headline on Ohio.com
says that Browns QB Brady Quinn was "sharp" last night; His 44.9 QB rating against the Bears indicates otherwise.

The Chicago Bears may have lost their starting tight end, rookie 1st round pick Greg Olsen, to a knee injury.

Bears DT Tommie Harris feels he's ready for the regular season.

Buccaneers WR Paris Warren was having a monster final game in what has been a great preseason for the second-year player out of Utah, but it all ended in the end zone after his second touchdown reception resulted in a broken leg. (WARNING: The injury is gruesome and the image on that link is graphic)

QB Chris Simms benched himself for the preseason finale.

Houston Texans rookie QB Jared Zabransky made his case to stick with the team.

They're saying the "P" word in Houston.

Panthers QB David Carr played well at times, but made a costly mistake.

WR Keary Colbert is vastly improved over last year.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are talking contract extension with their starting guard not named Faneca.

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette blogs that Steelers QB Brian St. Pierre does have practice squad eligibility remaining.

Miami Dolphins QBs John Beck and Gibran Hamdan combined to throw four interceptions against New Orleans last night, which raises an interesting question: Has any backup QB fighting for a roster spot in the final exhibition game ever been pulled from the game after throwing an interception? I ask, because that's exactly what happened to Gibran Hamdan in the 4th quarter.

Dolphins rookie head coach Cam Cameron gave himself the night off.

Saints rookie free agent RB Pierre Thomas made the most of his opportunity last night, but little else was revealed in the preseason finale.

The Rams may have lost RT Todd Steussie for the season with a broken foot, and DE Simeon Rice is visiting Rams Park today.

Rams WR Marques Hagan knows he gave it all this summer.

Chiefs QB Brodie Croyle continued to do nothing that would prove the Chiefs wrong for naming Damon Huard their starting quarterback.

Even after listing the several valid reasons why you shouldn't, Joe Posnanski of the Kansas City Star would take Larry Johnson very high for his fantasy football team, because he admittedly doesn't know shit about drafting a fantasy football team.

The Arizona Cardinals finised the preseason in playoff form. (That would be winless, folks)

Cardinals RB Edgerrin James likes how the running game is developing.

Denver Broncos CB Karl Paymah suffered a concussion in the second quarter, and guard Ben Hamilton is seeing a concussion specialist but could be ready to play soon.

Broncos WR Domenik Hixon has emerged as the team's kick returner.

It was a homecoming for 49ers QB Alex Smith, and he was in a giving mood. (Smith had a Rex Grossman-esque 6.2 QB rating)

San Diego business leaders are working on plans for a new stadium to keep the Chargers.

49ers RB Frank Gore is trying to emulate Chargers RB and reigning NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson in every way, including interviews.

The 49ers offense continued to struggle in the loss to the Chargers.

Jamison Bentley of the Baltimore Sun projects what the 2007 Baltimore Ravens roster will look like.

There are available roster spots all over the place in Atlanta.

Don't expect many of the Colts starters to play tonight.

The injury to kicker Shayne Graham is gumming up the works, roster-wise.

Patriots Ax Baugher; Sign Hanson

According to the New Bedford Standard Times, the New England Patriots have waived rookie punter Danny Baugher and have signed veteran Chris Hanson.

Hanson is not the host of MSNBC's "To Catch a Predator", and he's not real adept at handling an ax.

Is This It For Chris Simms?

The last time we really saw Buccaneers QB Chris Simms, he was being repeatedly slammed to the turf at Raymond James Stadium by the defense of the Carolina Panthers. He was hit so frequently, in fact, he needed to have his spleen removed. So even though there's no questioning Simms' toughness, tonight could be the last time Chris Simms appears in a Buccaneers uniform.

Quotes like this one from Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden say it all: "There's some things we want to clean up with him. He's the kind of kid I did everything to help him, and certainly he's capable of being a good quarterback in pro football. It'll be a tough call and a decision that, unfortunately, will have to be made."

When the Buccaneers gave Simms a 2-year, $7M contract in the off-season, he apparently was still in their plans. However, Simms' recovery from the splenectomy has been slow, and in the process, he's been passed on the depth chart by Jeff Garcia, who will start, and backups Luke McCown and Bruce Gradkowski.

If Simms plays well tonight and shows flashes of the player he was in 2005, it's possible that the Buccaneers will break from the norm and will carry four quarterbacks into the 2007 season. But with the Buccaneers are still attempting to determine whether or McCown or Gradkowski will be the #2 QB, so it's like Simms will only see mop-up duty again this week.

Should the Buccaneers release Simms, he won't last long on the open market. Interest in the well pedigreed quarterback will certainly be great, and I'm sure the Atlanta Falcons will be one of the first teams to come calling.

Carolina Panthers rookie LB Jon Beason has been a good surprise this summer.

The Pittsburgh Steelers say they are Super Bowl material. (So does Oakland, by the way)

The acquisition of QB Kelly Holcomb is something the Vikings had been working on for months, and is not a knee-jerk reaction to the performance of QB Brooks Bollinger.

The Vikings have backed out of a land-purchase deal.

There's no timetable for the return of Cowboys WR Terry Glenn.

Is Cowboys QB Tony Romo married?

Here are five things to watch for Buccaneers fans tonight, including the backup QB position and an unproductive tight end with freakish athletic attributes.

There are still some jobs available in Denver.

The Patriots have agreed to not use the franchise tag on CB Asante Samuel again in 2008.

Actress Bridget Moynihan has released the full name of the son she and Patriots QB Tom Brady welcomed to the world last week. Let's just say that between the newborn's initials and Johnny Damon's 2-run homer last night, Boston's inferiority complex meter will be on the rise today.

A decision from New York Giants DE Michael Strahan is coming soon.

The Tennessee Titans gave DT Corey Simon a 1-year deal with no signing bonus and incentives tied to playing time.

Rams CB Fakhir Brown says he's still waiting to hear from the NFL about his appeal of the 4-game suspension they handed down, but the NFL doesn't announce suspensions until the appeal process is over. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello put it another way: "There's nothing left to appeal".

Dallas Cowboys backup QB Brad Johnson has plenty left in his tank.

Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio says that WR Reggie Williams has "responded well" to the challenge. (Is this an indicator that he's going to stick around or are they trying to increase his trade value?)

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Hines Ward had surgery on his broken nose, but he could play in the preseason finale on Thursday.

The right side of the Minnesota Vikings line is still up for grabs.

The New Orleans Saints released three players on Tuesday.

The Buccaneers are very happy with rookie DE Gaines Adams, but are non-committal to how they'll use him.

Undrafted rookies often find a spot in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts.

Starters in Buffalo will make a cameo on Thursday night.

The Green Bay Packers are deep at cornerback.

The Arizona Cardinals are planning on building an indoor practice facility to offset the 100+ degree temperatures.

Steroids Allegations Dog QB Tim Couch

NFL QB Tim Couch, released by the Jacksonville Jaguars 10 days ago, is now facing steroids allegations in a report based on documents obtained by Yahoo! Sports.

Couch is accused of using anabolic steroids and HGH in his three-year quest to return the NFL following multiple shoulder surgeries. Couch denies the allegations, citing his passing of a drug test administered by the Jaguars on July 29th.

If it is proved Couch took steroids, he could be subject to discipline from the league, as players who are attempting to make a comeback are subject to the same drug policy as active players.

Briggs Initially Reported the Car Stolen

When Chicago Bears LB Lance Briggs crashed his 2007 Lamborghini Roadster, he called the police to report that his car was stolen.

Briggs immediately realized the ridiculousness of it and called them back to take responsibility, but if he knew it was so ridiculous, why didn't he remain at the scene of the accident?

Sorry, but this answers practically nothing.

Titans Sign Simon

The Tennessee Titans have signed DT Corey Simon today.

After 5 seasons in Philadelphia and one season in Indianapolis, Simon missed all of 2006 with an injury before being released earlier this summer by the Colts. Tennessee is hoping that a healthy Simon will improve their run defense.

Bears Being Naive About Briggs’ Accident

By now, everyone is aware that the 2007 Lamborghini Roadster belonging to Chicago Bears LB Lance Briggs was found wrecked and abandoned on an expressway on the north side of Chicago at 3:15am Monday morning. While there were no signs of injury, there was also no sign of the individual who owned the $350,000 vehicle.

Briggs later admitted that he was behind the wheel, and to Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith, this is all very simple. This was a one-car accident with no injuries and it’s nothing to get excited about. Lance Briggs didn’t break any rules, so there would no team discipline.

Smith is apparently okay with his Pro Bowl linebacker wrapping his sports car around a telephone pole at 3 in the morning and leaving the scene of the accident.

He might be the only one.

Briggs has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident (a misdemeanor charge) and has been cited for failure to give immediate notice of an accident and improper lane usage. He posted $100 bail and has a court date in October.

But still, one question lingered: Was alcohol involved?

Chicago-area reporters asked Smith if alcohol was involved in the crash, and he responded by saying “We have a one-car accident and now alcohol is involved? I think that's stretching a little bit to go that far.''

Is it really? If he weren’t somehow impaired:

Why else would Briggs not report the accident?
Why else would Briggs flee the scene and leave a brand-new sports car unattended on the side of an expressway in the nation's third largest city at 3am?
Why else would Briggs not avail himself to investigators for nearly 12 hours after the vehicle was discovered?

There were more questions raised than answered on Monday, and the bottom line is we may never know whether or not Briggs was impaired in that early Monday morning accident. Because there were no injuries and the accident involved only one car, Briggs is not required to submit a blood, breath, or urine sample to determine whether or not he was under the influence of alcohol.

Judging from Lovie Smith’s comments, it appears that Briggs was not only fortunate enough to walk away unharmed from the actual accident, he’ll suffer no team discipline for using such poor judgment.

This is, after all, the same regime (Lovie Smith/Jerry Angelo) that prefers to play the "good cop" role when it comes to disciplining their players, as they've previously deferred to the NFL to be the "bad cop" to discipline Tank Johnson and Ricky Manning after their brushes with authorities.

NFL Training Camp Notes

David Baugh of the Chicago Tribune thinks that of all the reasons for Briggs to be on the Chicago roads at 3am, few of them are good.

Falcons LB Keith Brooking left last night's game with a strained calf.

Atlanta's offense showed progress with QB Joey Harrington leading the way.

Bengals kicker Shayne Graham suffered a hip pointer last night.

Briggs Was Behind the Wheel; Faces Misdemeanor Charges

Lance Briggs admitted late this afternoon that he was the one behind the wheel of his 2007 Lamborghini Roadster that was found wrapped around a telephone pole on I-94 outside of Chicago.

Briggs will face misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene of an accident, and has been ticketed for failure to immediately notify police of a crash and for improper lane usage.

The question still remains is why Briggs left his $350K vehicle abandoned by the side of the road, or why it took him so long to release a statement through the Chicago Bears regarding this incident.

Lance Briggs' Lambo Found Crashed, Abandoned

A 2007 Lamborghini Roadster believed to belong to Chicago Bears LB Lance Briggs was found crashed and abandoned on a highway outside of Chicago.

There were no signs of injuries inside the vehicle (that's a good thing), but many questions need to be answered.

Who was driving?
Was the vehicle stolen?
Was the driver impaired? (Which would explain the flight)
Do we know where Tank Johnson is? (Sorry, couldn't resist)

If Briggs was driving, it's hard to believe that he'd just leave his new toy abandoned. The list price is nearly $350K, which isn't chump change for a guy who is still looking for the big-money guaranteed contract.

There are several reasons for Briggs, if he were driving, to flee the scene of this accident, and few of them are any good. At 3am, none of them are all that believable.

Patriots CB Asante Samuel Will Report to Team

The Providence Journal is reporting that Patriots CB Asante Samuel will report to Gillette Stadium this morning to sign his 1-year tender worth $7.79M.

Samuel, coming off his best season in the NFL, flew from Florida to Boston last night and should already be at the team's facility.

NFL Training Camp Notes - August 27th, 2007

Despite sloppy play from two of their offensive stars, the Steelers beat the Eagles, 27-13.

NFL Training Camp Notes - August 26th, 2007

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards has revealed the main storyline for next week's episode of "Hard Knocks".

Carolina Panthers LB
