Culpepper to Sign with Oakland
According to Adam Schefter of the NFL Network, if Daunte Culpepper passes a physical on Tuesday, he will sign a 1-year deal with the Oakland Raiders.
NFL Training Camp Notes - July 31st, 2007
Rookie Tony Ugoh is the early favorite to replace Tarik Glenn as the Colts' left tackle.
Rams CB Fakhir Brown wants to clear the air: He didn't fail the drug test that led to his 4-game suspension, he missed the test because he was working at his youth football camp. (And helping little old ladies cross the street, fetching cats who climbed to high in trees and removing Titliest's from the blowholes of beached whales)
The Minnesota Vikings are downplaying the forearm contusion suffered by RB Chester Taylor in today's practice.
Packers RB Vernand Morency will miss two weeks, opening the door for rookie RB Brandon Jackson to start this year.
After shipping Dante Hall across state to the Rams, the search is on in Chiefs camp for a new punt returner.
Ravens defensive coordinator had 340-pound Haloti Ngata blitzing from the middle linebacker spot. (Yikes)
Willie Parker's goal is to be like LaDainian Tomlinson, only better. (Which is about as realistic as my goal of one day being Scarlett Johannsen's bike seat)
The injury to Panthers LB Na'il Diggs doesn't look serious.
The injury to Jaguars C Brad Meester is serious.
Daunte Culpepper is heading to Oakland for a workout. Meanwhile, talks between the Raiders and #1 pick QB JaMarcus Russell are going nowhere fast.

49ers Gore Breaks Hand
According to Matt Maiocco of The Press Democrat San Francisco 49ers running back Frank Gore broke his right hand during practice, an injury that could keep the star back out for the pre-season games.
The injury will likely take a week to heal, so Gore will still be able to practice. Holding him out of the games is likely just a precautionary course of action by Mike Nolan and Co.

RIP: Bill Walsh
Bill Walsh, one of the most successful and innovative head coaches in the history of the National Football League, has passed away after a battle with leukemia.
Walsh lead the San Francisco 49ers to Super Bowl titles in 1981, 1984 and 1988 and was the inventor of the famed West Coast Offense.

NFL Training Camp Notes - July 30th, 2007
150 people showed up at Chiefs camp just to watch Priest Holmes stretch.
200 people turned up at the Georgia Dome to show their support for embattled Falcons QB Michael Vick.
For the first time since 2001, Baltimore Ravens camp is a distraction-free zone.
DT Corey Simon was a no-show at Colts camp, but Indianapolis did manage to sign a trio of draft picks, including the potential replacement for recently retired Tarik Glenn.
Patriots LB Tedy Bruschi is beginning to see signs of how old he is.
The running back situation in Green Bay is cloudy.
Sunday was a great day for the Chicago Bears defense. They acquired veteran DT Darwin Walker to bolster the interior line and got LB Lance Briggs onto the practice field.
Orlando Pace showed up to camp at 321 pounds, the lightest he's been in the NFL.
The Miami Dolphins coaches continue to juggle personnel along the offensive line.
QB J.T. O'Sullivan is pushing Dan Orlovsky for a backup job in Detroit. (Can't you just feel the excitement??)
The Seahawks opened up training camp in Seattle for the first time in 10 years and were greeted with rain and cool temperatures.
35-year old Larry Allen hasn't reported to 49ers camp, but his absence was excused and he is expected to show up today.
The Broncos are looking to bolster the front four.
Cleveland Browns head coach Romeo Crennel hopes Braylon Edwards lets his play do the talking. (Instead of, you know, his mouth)

NFL Training Camp Notes - July 29th, 2007
One year after signing a $7M contract with the Steelers, Ryan Clark is the underdog in a competition for the starting free safety position.
People keep asking, but Bill Belichick won't say if he's in the final year of his contract.
People keep asking, but Bill Belichick won't say if he's in the final year of his contract.
And the Boston Herald headline writers had fun with this one, and article about how Patriots CB Randall Gay is finally healthy and looking to earn a roster spot. ("Healthy Gay ready to fill in anywhere")
The second of the Bills' 2006 1st round pick is working his way back from a broken foot.
With the way the Chiefs players are talking about Priest Holmes, you start to wonder if he's already in camp but nobody recognizes him.
Jason Whitlock of the Kansas City Star thinks Herm Edwards deserves better than the circus this training camp is turning out to be. (I'm sure the HBO cameras have nothing to do with that)
Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star doesn't think the Colts will repeat in 2007.
Dan Morgan knows one more concussion could end his career, but he's going to play anyways.
Within this notebook in the Charlotte Observer, there's word that Panthers WR Steve Smith is gunning for Jerry Rice's single-season receiving yardage record (1,848).
Recently released DE Simeon Rice will meet with the New York Giants on Monday.
Eagles rookie LB Stewart Bradley is getting some work in middle until the veterans show up.
Despite coaching a group that has finished 27th, 24th, 29th, 14th and 28th in rushing the last 5 years, Bucs offensive line coach Bill Muir is now in charge of developing young talent in front of the 38 quarterbacks the Bucs have added in the off-season.
Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch details why the St. Louis Rams have been mediocre since losing Super Bowl XXXVI to the New England Patriots in 2002.
New NFL policies means the Broncos offensive linemen have to talk to the media.
Washington Redskins WR Brandon Lloyd is looking to shake the "bust" label after a disappointing 1st season in the nation's capitol.
Bengals QB Carson Palmer is poised for a big season.
Jose Miguel Romero of the Seattle Times has 9 things to look for when the Seahawks open camp this morning.
Packers WR Donald Driver failed his physical, but the Packers aren't concerned.
Vikings DE Kenechi Udeze is looking to prove himself in 2007.
Jean-Jacques Taylor of the Dallas Morning News says that after spending $82M in signing bonuses and salaries for his defense, the Cowboys have eliminated any and all excuses.
Oakland has signed 2nd round TE Zach Miller.
San Francisco has agreed to terms with 1st round LB Patrick Willis.
Cam Cameron has made some big changes in Miami Dolphins locker room.

Don Banks Really Loves Adalius Thomas
Don Banks checks in with a postcard from Patriots camp, and he really has a thing for Adalius Thomas. (It's his #5 camp observation)
From the article (My responses are denoted by "Mac"):
Don Banks: It was a match made in football heaven: the game's most versatile player, Pro Bowl outside linebacker Adalius Thomas, signing with the team known for placing a premium on versatility, the Patriots.
Mac: Adalius Thomas is the game's most versatile player? Really? Why do you think that, Mr. Banks?
Don Banks: The mind reels at the possibilities in regards to how New England might use Thomas, who played at least a few snaps at every defensive position on the field with Baltimore in 2005. (Honest).
Mac: I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that Don Banks began covering the NFL in 2005, which is the year that Adalius Thomas played defensive end, linebacker (outside/inside), cornerback and safety in two subsequent games. (Thomas did not play defensive tackle, which is still a position on an NFL defense.)
If Don Banks was covering the NFL before 2005, surely he'd of heard of Julian Peterson, an outside linebacker who was just as versatile as Adalius Thomas, but without the benefit of being on a defense with a bevy of Pro Bowl talent.
One can understand Don Banks absent-mindedness on this one. After all, Julian Peterson has all but disappeared. Wait a minute, what's that you say? Julian Peterson made his 3rd Pro Bowl last year? Even after he recovered from a torn Achilles in 2004?
2006 Stats
Adalius Thomas: 83 tackles, 11 sacks, 1 INT for 7 yards, 6 passes defended, 0 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery for 57 yards and a TD
Julian Peterson: 89 tackles, 10 sacks, 1 INT for -4 yards, 5 passes defended, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery for 25 yards.
Pretty similar numbers, don't you think? Oh, and Peterson is a year younger than Thomas.
But I digress...
Don Banks: On Friday morning, one of the first plays I noticed was Thomas dropping back maybe 10 to 12 yards into pass coverage and deflecting a Matt Cassel pass that was intended for third-year reserve tight end Matt Kranchick.
Mac: Wait a minute? A Pro Bowl-caliber outside linebacker dropped 12 yards into coverage to break up a pass thrown by a guy with 32 pass attempts in the NFL that was intended for a TE with one career reception who doesn't have a prayer of making the third pre-season game? I'll alert the nearest bronzer to get the bust ready for Canton.
Don Banks: I wouldn't be shocked if Thomas winds up being the Troy Brown of the Patriots defense, meaning he might even tempt the coaches into playing him on the other side of the ball (No. 96 lined up at tight end?).
Mac: Troy Brown played CB out of necessity, not design. Also, if you want to talk about versatile Patriots linebackers who has tempted the coaches into playing on the other side of the ball, what about Mike Vrabel? All Vrabel's done in his career is play LB (outside and inside), defensive end and coach a touchdown pass as a TE in a Super Bowl.
Look, I don't mean to criticize Don Banks, or Adalius Thomas for the matter, it's just tiring to see another article that makes way too much of this particular off-season move.

NFL Training Camp Notes - July 28th, 2007
Your daily spin around the NFL, in links form.
The Packers got top pick DT Justin Harrell into camp the night before practices begin.
Minnesota WR Troy Williamson caught between 13,000 and 15,000 passes in an attempt to cut down on the dropsies. The first pass that came his way in training camp? Yep, it bounced off his hands.
Colts DT Corey Simon (yes, he still plays for them) plans to report to camp on Sunday. (The Colts wish they could implant Corey Simon's eagerness to play into the recently retired Tarik Glenn)
With Corey Dillon retiring, Patriots RB Laurence Maroney is going to have carry more of the load in his second season. (Better stock up on the Kool-Aid)
Chiefs camp opened sans Larry Johnson and Priest Holmes.
The Seahawks will be looking for their swagger when training camp opens on Sunday.
Baltimore has officially signed rookie guard Ben Grubbs to a 5-year contract worth between $8-11 million dollars. Grubbs will compete with Chris Chester for the starting right guard job.
Former cornerback and return man Devin Hester is adapting to his new WR position, and DT Tommie Harris practiced for the first time since Week 13 of last season.
Within this notebook in The Tampa Tribune, Jon Gruden compares the first regular season assignment rookie DE Gaines Adams will face, going head-to-head with Seahawks LT Walter Jones, to a rookie baseball player facing Nolan Ryan in his first at-bat.
One of Michael Vick's co-defendants in the Michael Vick dogfighting charges is discussing a plea deal with prosecutors. That doesn't bode well for Mr. Vick.
Hall-of-Fame QB Jim Kelly thinks this is a "do or die" year for Bills QB JP Losman.
I'll put it in simple words: Jets guard Pete Kendall is pissed. He's not happy that the Jets are unwilling to re-negotiate his contract (he wants $1M more per year) and he's not happy that the Jets have put him in the rookie dorms. He's also working with the 2nd unit on the offensive line. (And if you think Eric Mangini is being an asshole, remember this: He did work under Bill Belichick for a few years)
The 49ers have signed 3rd round DE Ray McDonald, leaving 1st round LB Patrick Willis as the lone unsigned 49ers draft pick.
Cowboys TE Jason Witten got some tips from former Cowboys TE Jay Novacek.
In the world of celebrity worship, is it really surprising that on Matt Schaub's first official day as a starting QB with the Houston Texans, all anyone wanted to talk about was his former teammate Michael Vick?
Every Jaguar rookie has signed.

NFL Training Camp Notes - July 27th, 2007
What's happening around the NFL on a Friday afternoon? Here's a sampling:
The Patriots and first round pick Brandon Meriweather are so close to a contract, the rookie safety could be on the field for the Patriots' 530pm practice today.
Larry Johnson is a no-show at Chiefs camp. (Good thing they got Priest Holmes!)
The Colts vow all the off-field pursuits won't be a distraction.
The Ravens have signed OG Ben Grubbs, their 1st round pick, to a 5-year deal worth as much as $11M.
Cardinals rookie OT Levi Brown could end up with a contract that guarantees him over $17M.
20-year old Amobi Okoye, the 1st round pick of the Houston Texans, has signed a 6-year contract worth $17.6M (including $12.785M in guaranteed funds). He could possibly be eligible for free agency by the time he's 25.
If you've never head of Cowboys defensive coordinator Brian Stewart, you are not alone. But he isn't lacking in the confidence department.
"I feel it should be the best defense in the NFL," Stewart said.
Of course, he added this caveat: "Everybody has to stay healthy and everybody has to play to their capabilities. But, that happens, we should be the best defense in the NFL."

Marc Bulger Is a Very Rich Man
Yesterday, the big news in St. Louis Rams camp was that Rams QB Marc Bulger skipped a mandatory meeting in protest of the team not extending his contract.
Today, Marc Bulger has signed a brand-spankin' new, 6-year/$65M contract with $27M in guaranteed money.
Who could've guessed that tactic could work so well?

So...Did Anything Happen Today?
Spent the afternoon baking in hot, humid 90 degree weather at a company cookout, and apparently a few things happened in the NFL while I was away.
Tampa Bay signed rookie DE Gaines Adams to a 6-year, $46M contract (with $18.56M guaranteed). To celebrate the deal, the Bucs cut veteran DE Simeon Rice.
The Rams had a 1pm meeting today and QB Marc Bulger, who is seeking a new contract, was a no-show. (He was probably returning videos to Blockbuster without rewinding them)
Soon-to-be former Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Vick plead "not guilty" to the federal dogfighting-related charges against him today. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has wall-to-wall coverage of this, so I'll just link to their sports section.
It'll be "all hands on deck" when the Seahawks have their first practice on Sunday morning. The last remaining rookie, 2nd round CB Josh Wilson, signed his contract today.
Randy Moss will wear #81 for the Patriots.
Indianapolis has signed their top pick, WR Anthony Gonzalez, to a 5-year contract.

According to Mike Garafolo of The Star Ledger, the New York Giants have signed their 1st round pick, CB Aaron Ross from Texas.
Details are not available at this time, but Garafolo states that a source familiar with the deal states that the deal is for 5 years and contains $8M in guaranteed money. The total value of the deal could be worth as much as $13.5M.

A quick spin around the NFL:
Joe Rimkus Jr. of the Miami Herald writes that Dolphins rookie center Samson Satele is a "budding leader". (No wonder Ricky Williams wants to get back on the team)
Now that Lance Briggs has signed his 1-year tender, Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe wonders if a similar arrangement might be in the works for Patriots CB Asante Samuel.
Troy Williamson has been working with a vision specialist this off-season, and has caught between 13,000 and 15,000 passes this off-season.
The Vikings have signed 3rd round CB Marcus McCauley to a 4-year contract, but are still working on 1st round RB Adrian Peterson and 2nd round WR Sidney Rice.
The Seahawks are still without their top draft choice, and one of the problems could be that the guy chosen directly in front of him signed a 3-year contract, instead of the more standard 4-year contract.
Some non-Michael Vick news in Atlanta: Top choice DE Jamaal Anderson has agreed to terms, as have 2nd round CB Chris Houston and 6th round NT Trey Lewis.
Jason Whitlock of the Kansas City Star believes that Priest Holmes' comeback attempt is just a pawn in Carl Peterson's game against Larry Johnson.
The Packers have signed 2nd round RB Brandon Jackson to a4-year deal .
Buffalo has signed 2nd round LB Paul Posluszny, and 4th round RB Dwayne Wright.
John (Popper) Tomase of the Boston Herald chimes in with a few names to remember when the Patriots open camp tomorrow.
A bad toe is going to land Ravens LT Jonathan Ogden on the PUP list, but the team isn't at all concerned about it.
Steelers LB James Harrison can go from special teams ace to Joey Porter's replacement.
Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Steelers center Chukky Okobi has been running with the 1st team. He's competing with Sean Mahan, who signed a 5-year contract in the off-season, or the center job.
Jimmy Smith of The Times-Picayune has 10 questions as the Saints head to training camp...
...and not to be outdone, Jim(my?) Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has 10 questions about the Rams training camp.
The Arizona Cardinals have signed 2nd round DT Alan Branch to a 4-year contract.
Houston Texans left tackle Charles Spencer will miss the first 6 weeks of the season with a knee injury he sustained in Week 2 of the 2006 season.

Briggs Agrees to 1-Year Tender
Despite threatening to hold out until Week 10 or possibly beyond, Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs has signed his 1-year tender, and will report to training camp.
Word is that there was language added to the tender that prevents the Chicago Bears from placing the franchise tag on him again in 2008.

The 1986 LA Raiders Invented Rap/Rock
I'm not 100% sure what the ideal ingredients are when making a music video featuring a sports team from the 1980s, but I'm pretty certain that Matt Millen should be prominently involved. And if you could sprinkle in a little bit of Todd Christiansen (who looks like a porn star or an extra on CHiPs), that'd be great.
More on Priest Holmes
As noted below, Priest Holmes has reportedly told the Kansas City Chiefs that he's coming back in 2006. Adam Schefter believes he'll provide insurance for the Chiefs should Larry Johnson hold out.
Schefter writes, "With Holmes healthy and on the field, the Chiefs would have, if nothing else, a slightly higher degree of security at the running back position. They still would not know whether Holmes would be able to make it to and through the season, but they would have a back that has produced like few others in NFL history."
Okay, but is Holmes still an NFL caliber running back?
In his last 15 games, Holmes has carried the ball 315 times for 1343 yards (4.3 ypc) and 20 TDs, while chipping in 40 receptions for 384 yards and a pair of scores. There's certainly nothing shabby about that sort of production, unless you consider that those 15 games occurred over a span of two seasons.
He missed all of last season, and in the two seasons prior to that (2004, 2005), Holmes played in just one game after Halloween. While it's admirable that Holmes would want to attempt a comeback and finish his career on his own terms, the bottom line is this: He's coming off a spinal injury and isn't the caliber of player the Chiefs, or anyone else, should depend upon in 2007.

Priest Holmes Comeback?
After sitting out all of 2006 with what was thought to be a career-ending spinal injury, Priest Holmes plans on being in attendance when the Kansas City Chiefs open training camp, according to Adam Schefter of the NFL Network.
Schefter indicates that Holmes could provide the Chiefs with leverage in their negotiations with Pro Bowl running back Larry Johnson on a new contract. After missing all of last season, I tend to doubt that. Any holdout by Johnson would submarine the Chiefs season, and having Holmes active and in camp, is not going to affect what Johnson does or does not do.

Your daily spin around the NFL:
Kevin Seifert of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune notest that the Vikings enter training camp with "unprecedented inexperience" at the quarterback position.
New Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin got his player's attention in his first practice.
Nicholas Cotsonika of the Detroit Free Press checks in with five things to watch when Lions open training camp. (And not one of them has anything to do with firing Matt Millen)
Cam Cameron refuses to say that Trent Green is his starting QB. (As long as his competition is Cleo Lemon, I think it's safe to assume Green will be the guy. Unless he runs into Robert Geathers again.)
The Chargers did nothing in the off-season...and feel pretty good about it.
As noted yesterday, the Seahawks signed a pair of defensive draft picks and have only one draft choice not under contract. (Due to the rookie pool, I'd expect this one to be completed before camp opens on Thursday)
Curtis Martin will retire tomorrow.
The Cardinals and their top two draft picks agree on the structure of contract, but still have to sort out the pesky "money" part.
Even with the losses of Jeff Garcia and Donte Stallworth, there is hope for the Philadelphia Eagles. (Mac's response: "No shit")
A day after signing their Tank, the Chiefs have signed their Turk.
It's an important year for a pair of Ravens wideouts.
Re-signing Marc Bulger is priority #1 for the St. Louis Rams.
A few Patriots will start out camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, including Pro Bowl DE Richard Seymour.
The always enjoyable Pat Yasinskas of the Charlotte Observer makes his case for the Atlanta Falcons to look at Chris Weinke as a backup to Joey Harrington.
Tarik Glenn will be missed, and Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star thinks Tarik Glenn is an admirable person, as well as a Ring of Famer.
Broncos safety Sam Brandon needs another microfracture procedure on his knee, and in today's NFL, that means he's going to be released.
Packers rookie safety Aaron Rouse is a guy you want to root for.
The Browns are still without their top three picks.
Some jobs are open to competition in Bills camp.
The Tampa Tribune has part 4 of a 17-part series: "Get to Know a Buccaneers Quarterback". Today's installment: Bruce Gradkowski.
The 6-year contract signed by Bears CB Charles Tillman, is actually pretty similar to the deal signed by his teammate, CB Nathan Vasher, in terms of actual dollars the player will earn. (Tillman will earn $29M over 5 years, Vasher will earn $28M over 5) Also, within the same article, we see that there's hope that Lance Briggs will be in Bears camp next month.

Tarik Glenn Officially Retires
Sorry, Colts fans. The man in charge of protecting Peyton Manning's blindside, Tarik Glenn, despite being just 31 years old and a year away from free agency, has officially called it a career.
The announcement was made at a press conference at Colts headquarters, which makes it as official as it possibly could get.

Here's a quick spin around the NFL:
The St. Louis Rams top picks remain unsigned.
Top picks also remain unsigned in Minnesota, Arizona, and everyone else in the Top 10.
This week is probably the ideal time for Atlanta Falcons second-year safety Jimmy Williams' citation for misdemeanor marijuana possession to come to light.
In the same week his cousin Padraig won the British Open, the Atlanta QB job is all Joey's.
Still no word in Indianapolis about whether or not Tarik Glenn is actually retiring, and the Colts are not about to pressure a decision from him.
Brian Burwell of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch believes the Rams need to show Bulger some R-E-S-P-E-C-T during contract talks. (Actually, I think they just need to show him some M-O-N-E-Y)
Day One of Steelers Camp is in the books.
The Jets have placed WR Tim Dwight and LB Matt Chatham, who they pilfered from the New England Patriots, on the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list.
The Chiefs have signed a Tank, but are missing a Turk.
Green Bay has signed some picks.

According to Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has ordered Michael Vick to not attend training camp at the Atlanta Falcons' Flowery Branch, GA headquarters.
In other Vick news, Atlanta's FOX affiliate is reporting that the "NFL says Michael Vick will be taking a leave of absence". This aspect of the Vick saga can not be corroborated at this time.

Polamalu Gets Paid
The Pittsburgh Steelers and Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu have agreed on a 5-year, $33M contract that contains $15.375M in guaranteed bonuses.
The per year average of this deal ($6.6M) makes Polamalu the NFL's highest paid safety, as it eclipses the $6.29M annual average that Baltimore's Ed Reed earns. The $15M in bonuses also exceeds teh $11.1M bonus that Dallas gave Roy Williams.

The Miami Dolphins have signed the guy Dolphins fans hope will be the next Dan Marino, former BYU quarterback John Beck, to a 4-year contract.

Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star suggests that Tarik Glenn's retirement "could leave Colts' line with dilemma". (Really?)
First year head coach Ken Whisenhunt is getting things ready for Cardinals camp in Flagstaff, Arizona. Those who cannot pass the first physical test, a 300-yard shuttle, "will be dealt with accordingly".
Jim Haslett thinks that the Rams can be a middle-of-the-pack defense in 2007. (Aim high, Jim. Aim high.)
As the NFL's all-time leading rusher, it's obvious Emmitt Smith is a great football player. As the winner of ABC's "Dancing With the Stars", it's clear that Emmitt Smith is a pretty good dancer. As evidenced by this article, Emmitt Smith is the last person MIchael Vick wants testifying on his behalf, even though Smith's intentions are good.

Hey Emmitt, you're not helping. If Vick was even at one dogfight that took place on the property in Surry County, Virginia he owns, he's guilty of the charges listed in the indictment. He always would be found to have lied to everyone about his involvement, as his only public statements have been that he's "never there" when referring to the property he owns in Surry County, Virginia.

Tarik Glenn Retiring?
According to Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star, the word out of Indianapolis is that 3-time Pro Bowl left tackle Tarik Glenn, the man entrusted to protect franchise QB Peyton Manning, is planning on retiring before the Colts open training camp on July 29th.
Glenn is slated to become a free agent in 2008 and at least one website, ProFootballTalk.com, is suggesting that Glenn's retirement talk could be a protest at the ridiculous contract the Colts recently gave franchised defensive end Dwight Freeney.
Stay tuned.

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette believes that the Steelers training camp will look like a job fair this summer. Within the same article, there's word that the Steelers have signed 3rd round tight end Matt Spaeth to a 3-year contract, with 1st round linebacker Lawrence Timmons and 5th round cornerback William Gay the team's remaining unsigned draft choices.
The Boston Herald takes a look at the Patriots tight end situation before they head into training camp. Interestingly, the Herald's Albert Breer calls Ben Watson the only "lock" among the five tight ends heading into camp...and then predicts that by the end of 2007, David Thomas will emerge as the best tight end on the team. To quote the Geico caveman..."Uh, what?"
(Personally, I think that Watson, Thomas and Kyle Brady are locks, with Mills stealing a roster spot from the RBs. Watson is the best TE on the roster, Thomas is a 2nd-year player with potential and the team paid Kyle Brady too much guaranteed money to cut him.)
A San Diego Charger fan who purchased tickets to the second Chargers home playoff game last January, which didn't occur, and still hasn't received his refund from the team, has filed a class-action lawsuit against the team. (No word on whether or not Chargers safety Marlon McCree was named as a co-defendant for fumbling away the Bolts chance at locking the game away)
The Buccaneers are a week away from camp and half of their draft picks remain unsigned.
I'm two days late on this, but the expectations people in Dallas have for their prized free agent, Ken Hamlin, are ridiculously misguided. Hamlin was a fan favorite in Seattle for his big hits and physical nature, and he will be a vocal guy on and off the field for the Cowboys. However, when he was a Seahawk, he was not a good tackler, was often caught out of position and was not a leader on the field.
In fact, many felt that Marquand Manuel stabilized the safety position after Hamlin's 2005 season ended early due to head injuries suffered in a nightclub brawl. The Seahawks secondary play improved and the 'Hawks went to the Super Bowl. In 2006, Hamlin was back as the starting free safety and Seattle once again gave up too many big plays.
Travis Henry is looking forward to making himself "The Man" in Denver.

Alan Faneca "doesn't think he'll have bells on", but he'll be at what he says will be his last training camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
DE/LB Lamarr Woodley, the Steelers' 2nd round choice in last April's draft, has agreed to terms on a four-year contract.
Jake "The Snake" Plummer's high school coach doesn't think Plummer will re-think his decision to walk away from over $5M dollars when he retired a few months ago. (As the article mentions, Plummer drives a Honda Element, which speaks volume about his decision-making skills.)
The Seahawks normally train at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, WA, but opted to hold training camp at their Kirkland headquarters when they were scheduled to play the New England Patriots in Beijing, China. Once the league scuttled those plans, it was too late for the Seahawks to change plans. The Seahawks headquarters are in a residential area, so Seahawks fans will have precious few opportunities to go and watch training camp.
The Giants have signed their 5th-round pick, tight end Kevin Boss from Western Oregon, to a 4-year contract.

Vick Court Date Set
Michael Vick will be required to be in a Richmond, Virginia courthouse on July 26th for a 330pm bond hearing and a 4pm arraignment before a US District Judge. In this case, Judge Henry Hudson will be presiding. He doesn't sound like the cuddly kind of federal judge you've heard and read about.
At 3pm on the same day, the Atlanta Falcons will begin their 2007 training camp.

Tony Romo Sings
Deadspin has the story of Tony Romo singing karaoke at The American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament last weekend in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
They also have photo documentation of the event.

I guess dating Carrie Underwood is paying off, because he looks like a natural with a microphone in his hand. The song Romo used to entertain the masses in this photo? Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer".
Yep, the same song that says "We've got to hold on, ready or not"
Nice choice, Tony. And remember, the Cowboys were close to winning a playoff game last year. In fact, once LP Ladouceur snapped that ball to you, Dallas was "halfway there".

The Steelers are close to extending Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu's contract.
What happens when a 2nd year head coach convinces an overmatched GM to give a pair of ordinary players lucrative long-term contracts? The Detroit Free-Press praises him for it. Also, with a week to go before Lions camp opens, the team and rookie Calvin Johnson don't appear near a contract.
Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe breaks down the Patriots options should CB Asante Samuel's 1-year tender remain unsigned when camp opens up.
One Buccaneer blogger wishes Mike Alstott would just retire already.
The Vikings still plan to start either Tarvaris Jackson or Brooks Bollinger at quarterback when the Vikings host the Atlanta Falcons on September 9th.
The league might allow suspended CB Adam "Pacman" Jones participate in training camp and pre-season games...but the team doesn't appear interested in having him there.

Culpepper to Jacksonville?
Adam Schefter of the NFL Network is reporting that the most likely landing spot for recently released QB Daunte Culpepper is Jacksonville.
Schefter went on to report that representatives for Culpepper had previously spoken to Jacksonville management about a 3-year contract.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Vick Indictment
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has the full 18-page indictment of Michael Vick available on their website.
You can read it all here.
You can read it all here.
Beginning of End for Michael Vick?
Michael Vick has been indicted by a federal grand jury for dogfighting charges.
Some of the highlights from the above article:
The indictment states: "If convicted on the Travel Act portion of the conspiracy charge, each defendant faces a statutory maximum of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and full restitution. If convicted on the animal fighting venture portion of the conspiracy charge, each defendant faces one year in prison, a $100,000 fine, or both. The indictment also includes a forfeiture allegation seeking recovery of any property constituting, or derived from, proceeds obtained directly or indirectly as a result of these offenses. "
Now that Vick has been indicted after an investigation into an activity that is so cruel, most Americans don't even want to know about the details, it doesn't take a legal expert to realize that this does not end well for Michael Vick. Granted, his ending won't be nearly as bad as the one faced by the dozens of animals that were killed on his Surry County, Virginia property, but Michael Vick's NFL future looks cloudy, at best.
First of all, and as if it actually needs to be mentioned, his endorsement future is finished.
Secondly, after the water bottle incident at the Miami airport, the lawsuit against him for allegedly passing a STD to a young woman and now being indicted in a dogfighting probe, he is the next NFL player in line for a season-long suspension from the league's commissioner, Roger Goodell.
A statement from the Atlanta Falcons is expected later today. Currently, the only two words the Falcons PR department can muster is "Oh" and "Shit".

Fins Cut Culpepper
As if the Dolphins trade for Trent Green wasn't an obvious enough of a sign, the Daunte Culpepper era in Miami has officially come to an end.
So what's next for Daunte?
Oakland? They could certainly use a veteran starter until JaMarcus Russell is ready to start.
Atlanta? With the Michael Vick/dogfighting investigation ongoing, and Joey Harrington as the #2 QB, would new head coach Bobby Petrino be interested in bringing Culpepper to town just in case something were to happen to Vick?
What about a return to Minnesota? Though head coach Brad Childress downplayed the Vikings interest in a veteran QB earier today, could the availability of Culpepper change his tune?

Edgerrin James has removed his gold teef because it's business time.
Josh Brown will kick for the 1-year tender.
Jeff Gordon, of the St. Louis Dispatch (not NASCAR), thinks the Rams defensive players need to be good citizens for the team to succeed in 2007. (I guess they should of thought of that before giving a big money extension to Leonard Little, who killed a woman while driving drunk a few years ago)
As the season gets closer, Mike Reinfeldt and his family are reuniting. (And based on Internet rumors, they could repeat this next year when Reinfeldt bolts for Green Bay)
The Steelers and 1st round pick Lawrence Timmons have exchanged contract proposals.
Now that the Lions have given Corey Redding a $49M contract, current Minnesota Viking DT Pat Williams, a free agent-to-be after 2007, is looking for a big payday when he hits the market despite the fact that he'll turn 35 in October. (Yeah, good luck with that, Pat)
Steve Wyche of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution breaks down some defensive camp battles to watch for when the Falcons open training camp.
The Bears are just nine days away from the headache that will be the Lance Briggs holdout.

Niners Sign Staley
Offensive tackle Joe Staley has agreed to a 5-year contract with the 49ers tonight. Staley, the 28th pick in the 2007 NFL draft, becomes just the second 1st round draft choice to agree to terms, joining Chicago Bears tight end Greg Olsen (the 31st choice).
Panthers Sign 3rd Round DE
The Carolina Panthers have signed 3rd round draft choice Charles Johnson, a defensive end out of Georgia.

No Deal For Samuel
Despite word over the weekend that the two sides were close, no deal between the Patriots and franchise cornerback Asante Samuel was reached before today's 4pm EST deadline.
From the sounds of Mike Reiss's article, Samuel wants a deal that averages $10M over the first three years of the contract. The Patriots have been countering with an offer that averaged $6M a year and had $13M in bonus, i.e., guaranteed money.
That's a pretty big gap, and since no deal was reached today, no long-term deal can be struck (or at least announced) until after the 2007 season. This looks like the Patriots will be without Samuel in August, but I don't see his holdout extending into the regular season. I thought the same thing about the Deion Branch situation a year ago, though, so you never know.

Chiefs Fans Already Looking to 2020
Hey, I know that Larry Johnson isn't happy with his contract and could holdout when training camp begins later this month. And I know that the Chiefs aren't itching to give LJ a monster contract and could send him packing to Green Bay.
But this is ridiculous.
But this is ridiculous.
Corey Redding: $49M Man
In the last 18 months, NFL teams have been signing free agent guards to 7-year/$49M contracts. Steve Hutchinson got that from the Vikings. Eric Steinbach got that from the Browns. Derrick Dockery got that from the Bills and Leonard Davis got that from the Dallas Cowboys.
Now one of the guys who matches up against these highly-paid guards has received a contract similar in value.
The Detroit Lions have signed franchise DT Corey Redding to a 7-year, $49M contract with more than $16M in guaranteed money.
With a little over an hour to go, the following franchise players still have not reached a long-term deal with their respective teams:
Asante Samuel, CB, New England Patriots
Lance Briggs, LB, Chicago Bears
Josh Brown, K, Seattle Seahawks
Justin Smith, DE, Cincinnati Bengals

Samuel Deal Coming Soon?
Samuel Deal Coming?
Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald sounds pretty optimistic that a long-term deal between the Patriots and Asante Samuel will be struck before today's deadline. Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe does not share the same optimism.
NFL teams have until 4pm EST today to reach long-term deals with players designated with the franchise tag this off-season. Once that deadline passes, teams cannot finalize long-term agreements until after the 2007 season.
Seven players were hit with the franchise tag this season:
Lance Briggs, LB, Chicago Bears - Status: Contentious, at best. Briggs is threatening a lengthy holdout if he's not traded or offered a wealthy, long-term contract. Chicago's front office does not appear to be budging.
Asante Samuel, CB, New England Patriots - Status: Both sides are talking, but nothing appears imminent. Earlier this off-season, Samuel threatened to hold out until Week 10, though I'd expect him to sign his tender and report to the team before the season starts. $7.79M is a lot of money to walk away from.
Corey Redding, DT, Detroit Lions - Status: Detroit is actively attempting to re-sign Redding, who along with Shaun Rogers, form one of the top tackle tandems in the NFL.
Josh Brown, K, Seattle Seahawks - Status: Brown has signed his 1-year tender and wants to remain a Seahawk. The Seahawks want to retain him. Still, no long-term deal has been struck.
Justin Smith, DE, Cincinnati Bengals - Status: Smith has signed his 1-year tender.
Dwight Freeney, DE, Indianapolis Colts - Status: Freeney has signed a 6-year/$72M contract, the richest contract in NFL history for a defensive player. Freeney will earn over $37M over the first three years of the contract, which isn't bad for guy who had just 5.5 sacks in a season where the Indianapolis Colts were 2nd to last in the NFL in sacking opposing quarterbacks.
Charles Grant, DE, New Orleans Saints - Status: Signed a 7-year contract that contained $20M in guaranteed money. The total value of the contract could exceed $60M.

KC's Allen Has Suspension Reduced
One of the NFL's best pass-rushing defensive ends, and most prolific drinkers, received some good news on Sunday night.
The NFL has decided to cut his suspension in half.
Allen will miss a road game against the Texans and the Chiefs' home-opener against the Chicago Bears.
And with that, we're back. NFL training camps open up in less than two weeks and I've been hard at work doing some behind the scenes activity. In the coming weeks, we'll have:
- Multiple posts per day during training camp
- One team preview per day during training camp
- Complete 2007 Predictions
- During the season, we'll be doing the "Mac's Pick" each week
