A quick review of last year's "Fearless Major League Baseball Predictions" shows that I correctly predicted the following:
The New York Yankees would win the AL East.
The St. Louis Cardinals would win the NL Central.
And Justin Verlander would win the AL Rookie of the Year award.
Jon Papelbon would be Boston's closer by June 1st.
Yep, that's it. Out of 48 predictions, I was successful on 4 of them. With a success rate like that, how could I resist making more predictions for 2007?

Miscellaneous Predictions
- Roger Clemens will announce in May that he is returning for another season, and will choose to play for the New York Yankees so that he and Andy Pettitte can continue their man crush.
- Dice-K will be the most dominant starting pitcher in April and May, which will pave the way for a 15+ win season.
- Barry Bonds will hit his 23rd HR of the season, and #756 in his career, on Friday, August 31st against Washington.
The goal this year isn't to go 48-48 with these predictions. As long as I get the World Series prediction right, I'll be a happy guy.

Who Are Scouts, Inc?
According to this statement, ESPN's Scouts Inc. has "analysts and talent evaluators that watch games, break down film and use their extensive experience and contacts in their respective sports to provide the deepest and most detailed scouting reports available anywhere."
Well, that's just great. In theory.
The trouble is I've rarely read a Scouts Inc. article that wasn't full of misinformation. For example, tonight ESPN.com posted their in-depth off-season overview of the Seattle Seahawks.
As you know, I'm a (big) Seahawks fan and not a day goes by where I don't ponder what the Seahawks are lacking and how they can best address the situation. So it might not be entirely fair of me to take an article written by a national writer, or in this case, Keith Kidd, who spent 14 years working in NFL front offices, including "key roles in the personnel departments" for teams like Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots.
Keith writes: "WR Deion Branch is not a No.1 receiver, but he is Seattle's go-to-guy and should have a better season in 2007 now that he will have an offseason to get acclimated to the West Coast offense."
Mac responds: Yes and no. Deion Branch is not a No. 1 receiver and his numbers should improve in 2007 after a full off-season to familiarize himself with the offense, but he's not Seattle's "go-to-guy". Not as long as Darrell Jackson is on the roster.
Keith writes: "The Seahawks do have three key players who have not been re-signed and are still available. WR Bobby Engram has been a productive No. 3 receiver in their offense, while OC Robbie Tobeck and ROG Chris Gray have started a lot of games for the Seahawks over their careers."
Mac responds: Seattle re-signed Bobby Engram on Friday, but I can overlook this because I'm sure Mr. Kidd wrote this article in the middle of the week. But the inclusion of Robbie Tobeck in this group is troubling because he, well, retired. In January. Also, according to statements made by Seahawks top guy Tim Ruskell, the team is actively attempting to bring Chris Gray back for one more season.
Keith writes: "Tobeck began the 2006 season as the starter before getting injured and he it seems likely that he won't be back. Gray is 36 year old and also seems unlikely to return. As of today, Rob Sims (LOG), Chris Spencer (OC) and Ray Willis (ROG) are slated to be the starters. The Seahawks need some depth along the offensive line in case there players don't perform up to expectations."
Mac responds: Well, we know that Tobeck won't be back, because I mentioned above, he retired. Kidd mentions that Gray is unlikely to return, but as I also mentioned above, the team is attempting to bring him back for 2007. Kidd's insertion of Ray Willis to the starting right guard spot is beyond troubling.
First of all, Kidd omits the recently re-signed Floyd "Pork Chop" Womack in his article. Womack opened the 2006 season as the starting left guard, but once again, injuries opened the door for another player (Sims) to step in and lock down a starting job on the interior line.
Secondly, Ray Willis is a tackle. While tackles and guards can sometimes be interchangeable, I can't find any empirical data that suggests Ray Willis has ever played guard at any level. Moving him to guard now, after two full seasons in the NFL, wouldn't be unprecedented, but Willis is a natural tackle whose name has never been mentioned as a possibility at the guard position.
So why do I mention this? Well, I think it's important to clear up the rather obvious errors within this article published by "The Worldwide Leader". It's also important to point out that while this particular article is free, most articles featuring the Scouts Inc. "experts" require you to pony up the $40 annual subscription fee. So just because you think you're getting quality information for that fee, that may not always be the case.

Friday Signings
After Houston acquired Matt Schaub from the Atlanta Falcons, the Texans have officially closed the book on the 1st player the franchise ever drafted by releasing QB David Carr.
The Dallas Cowboys have signed former Seahawks safety Ken Hamlin to a one-year, $2.5M contract. Hamlin was a former second round pick who started 52 games for the Seahawks, including all 16 games in 2006 after missing 10 games in 2005 with a fractured skull he suffered after a brawl outside a Pioneer Square nightclub.

LaRussa Charged With DUI
Let's face it: Spring Training is pretty boring.
There's nothing exciting about split-squad games featuring guys wearing #84 and their Sisyphian efforts to make a roster despite playing the same position as that team's two-time MVP whose income exceeds the gross domestic product of half the countries on his home continent.
If that's not enough to make you fall asleep, the addition of alcohol can certainly expedite that process. And that's exactly what's happened this morning to St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa.
LaRussa drew the attention of Jupiter, Fla police when he took a nap in the front seat of his running SUV despite having a green light. After a field sobriety was administered, LaRussa submitted a breath test and was above Florida's legal limit of .08.
*With the NFL Free Agency market winding down, the focus will slowly shift over to baseball for a few months. Projects coming up:
- Mac's NFL Mock Draft version 2.0 (Later Today/Tomorrow)
- Mac's 2007 Baseball Predictions (3/29-3/30)

More Details on Schaub-to-Texans Deal
Jay Glazer of FOXSPORTS.com is reporting that the Falcons will receive 2nd round picks in 2007 & 2008, as well as a swap of 1st round picks in 2007 for Matt Schaub.
It sound like a lot to part with, but had Houston pursued Matt Schaub with a lucrative offer sheet, they would've been required to compensate the Falcons with their 1st and 3rd round picks in next month's draft.
Glazer always appears to be tuned in to the happenings in the NFC South, so I'm going to assume that this is true.
Coming later today: An updated Mock Draft.

Texans Acquire Schaub
Adam Schefter of NFL.com is reporting that the Houston Texans have acquired QB Matt Schaub from the Atlanta Falcons. The compensation is reportedly a 2nd round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, but other compensation may be involved.
This trade sends two clear messages:
1. The Houston Texans aren't sold on the David Carr Era.
2. The Atlanta Falcons are sold on Michael Vick.
So the Houston Texans aren't convinced that David Carr can take them to the post-season. Last season, Carr completed 68.3% of his passes, but threw more INTs (12) than TDs (11). Overall, Carr finished with his second-highest passer rating (82.1) than his 5-year career. That mark was good enough to place Carr 15th in the NFL in that category.
At the same time, the Falcons are backing Michael Vick and his 75.7 QB rating. Vick's running ability does make him more valuable, but the fact that he hasn't developed into a more polished passer, despite being given a much better supporting cast than other QBs (like David Carr, for example) has to be a concern of new head coach Bobby Petrino.
Before last season, Atlanta acquired former Broncos 1st round pick Ashley Lelie, which gave the Falcons a trio of former 1st round picks at the WR position (Michael Jenkins, Roddy White), a Pro Bowl-caliber TE (Alge Crumpler) and the NFL's top rushing attack.
Vick still stumbled, on and off the field.

Kerney's Home Site of Alleged Rape
A woman, who apparently lives in the same Buckhead home as new Seattle Seahawks DE Patrick Kerney, was assaulted by an unnamed male suspect. Kerney was in the home at the time of the assault.
According to published reports, the 29-year old woman was out at a bar with some friends when they accepted a ride home (to Kerney's house) from three males, who they invited into the house for drinks. The woman fell asleep on the sofa, and when she awoke, she was in a bedroom and the suspect was having sex with her. She told him to stop, and he placed his thumb on her throat and continued, forcing her to perform oral sex on him. She was able to escape by telling the suspect that she was going to get a friend to join them, and retreated to a bathroom. At this time, the suspect and his two friends ran out of the house.
A police report, obtained by the Tacoma News Tribune's Mike Sando, likely eliminates Patrick Kerney as a suspect. The victim has described her assailant as a black male. Kerney, is a white male.
Kerney has issued a statement regarding this incident:"I am aware that, while I was asleep on Sunday morning, an assault took place in my home. Out of respect for my friend who was assaulted, and the police officers who are diligently working to apprehend the offenders, I cannot comment any further. My focus is on supporting my friend during this time of need."

Free Agent Signings Update
The day job and putting 2300 songs onto an iPod has consumed much of my time lately. Time to catch up on some NFL free agent signings, post my first official NFL Mock Draft and shift gears with my official NCAA bracket.
NFL Signings (And News)
New Orleans signs safety Kevin Kaesviharn to a 4-year contract. New Orleans needed help in the secondary, and Kaesviharn is a steady veteran who will help immediately.
Meanwhile, Seattle signed safety Brian Russell, a day after signing safety Deon Grant. Both Russell and Grant share an agent, and will add veteran leadership to a secondary that looked lost too often in 2006. Mike Sando of the Tacoma News Tribune has often blogged about how Seahawks President Tim Ruskell expressed his dismay with the play from the safety position, so the Seahawks choosing smart players over the more physically talented ones makes sense.
What does this mean for Ken Hamlin? Arguably the most physically talented safety on the free agent market, he's only had one reported visit (with New Orleans) despite being at the top of every pundits "Top Free Agents" lists. He may, or may not, end up visiting the Tennessee Titans, whose new GM spent the last few seasons working for the Seahawks.
Perhaps the reason why Hamlin isn't generating much interest can be summed up by two plays I saw first-hand in Qwest Field last year.
Play #1 - On a 4th-and-5 play from the Seahawks 31-yard line, St. Louis opts to go for it instead of kicking a field goal. Rams' quarterback Marc Bulger throws the ball deep down the right sideline and Hamlin picks the ball off, tapping his toes to stay inbounds at the 8-yard line. It was a very athletic play, but a very stupid one. Had Hamlin knocked the ball down, Seattle would've had better field position. His decision to intercept the ball was equivalent to a highly successful pooch punt for St. Louis. Seattle went 3-and-out giving the ball back to the Rams at midfield.
And on the subsequent Rams drive...
Play #2 - St. Louis has the ball inside the Seahawks 10-yard line. Bulger lofts a pass into the end zone, right towards Ken Hamlin, who drops the ball. Rams end up kicking a field goal. It was a gift interception for Hamlin, a ball that Jim Abbott could've caught, but he dropped it and it allowed the Rams to add a field goal and trim the Seahawks lead to 1 point.
So for as athletic as Ken Hamlin is, and for as much as he gets the crowd riled up with the occasional knockout hit, he's not a sound tackler and he often doesn't play smart, fundamental football. In this day and age, there may not be a market for a player like that.
The Tennessee Titans are still trying to figure out how to handle the Pacman Jones situation, but in the meantime, they've added a quality cornerback in Nick Harper. This moves protects them in case Jones needs to be released, is suspended or at the rate he's going, trades his appearances in the police blotter for the obituary page. It also weakens a division rival, which is always a smart thing to do.
The Falcons signed Toniu "Two Ton" Fonoti, which drew applause from restaurant owners in the Atlanta area.
Though nobody in the Boston area will come out say it, the Patriots missed guys like David Givens and Deion Branch in the post-season last year. With Chad Jackson, last year's 2nd round pick, out indefinitely with a torn ACL, the Patriots have signed a trio of wide receivers this off-season, including a pair of former Tennessee Volunteers wide receivers, who at one time, didn't care for one another.
Deion Branch was reportedly instrumental in Donte Stallworth accepting a one-year "prove it" contract with the New England Patriots. This isn't a surprise, as Branch is a quality individual who always maintained that his holdout last summer was about business. Watch this video and tell me you wouldn't want this man on your team.
The Seattle Seahawks signed 35-year old TE Marcus Pollard to a one-year contract. When I first heard the news, I still had "high" hopes that the Seahawks would bring back unrestricted free agent Jerramy Stevens. Hours later, the Arizona Republic broke the news that Stevens was arrested early Tuesday morning for suspicion of a DUI and possession of marijuana.
The Arizona Republic did what other news outlets haven't done. They correctly referred to Stevens as an NFL tight end. Other news agencies are reporting it as "Seahawks' Stevens Arrested for DUI...". Stevens is no longer a Seattle Seahawk. His contract expired on March 1st, and he is officially an unrestricted free agent. According to people close the Seahawks, re-signing Stevens was not a priority of this front office. Clearly, they knew more about Stevens off-field issues and in an age where marginal tight ends (Visanthe Shiancoe, for example, got $7M in guaranteed money), the Seahawks weren't about to risk that kind of money in a player they suspected they could not depend on.
Stevens' neighbors aren't the least bit surprised that he's been arrested, and based on their allegations, I can't say I blame them.
The NFL off-season programs are about to shift into high gear. One player who won't be participating in his team's program is Chicago Bears defensive tackle Terry "Tank" Johnson, who will be donning prison garb for the next 4 months.
Philadelphia landed underrated free agent WR Kevin Curtis. As a Seahawks fan, I'm glad he's no longer in the NFC West.

NCAA Bracket (To Beat All Brackets)
It may be Friday, but I thought I'd post the best bracket I submitted in a pool.
Round 1
Thursday winners: Maryland, VCU, PITT, Indiana, UCLA, North Carolina, Michigan State, Vanderbilt, Washington State, Boston College, Georgetown, Ohio State, Louisville, Texas A&M
Thursday losers: Old Dominion, BYU
Friday: Florida, Arizona, Notre Dame, Oregon, Georgia Tech, Wisconsin, Kansas, Kentucky, Virginia Tech, Southern Illinois, Arkansas, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, Creighton, Memphis
Sweet 16: Florida, Maryland, Oregon, Georgia Tech, Kansas, Southern Illinois, PITT, UCLA, North Carolina, Texas, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, Ohio State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Memphis
Elite 8: Florida, Oregon, Kansas, UCLA, North Carolina, Georgetown, Ohio State, Memphis
Final Four: Oregon, Kansas, North Carolina, Ohio State
National Championship Game: Kansas over Ohio State
I know, three 1-seeds and a 3-seed is a chalk bracket, but you don't win pools by being risky.

"Pork Chop" Re-Signs With Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks have re-signed veteran offensive lineman Floyd "Pork Chop" Womack. Womack, a 7-year veteran out of Mississippi State University, provides depth along the offensive line and could possibly start for the Seahawks at the vacant right guard position.
The contract is for one-year, and no terms have been disclosed.
Stallworth Deal Essentially A One Year Audition
As expected, the contract the New England Patriots offered WR Donte Stallworth is essentially a one-year contract worth $3.6M. He has received a $1M signing bonus, and stands to earn a $1.6M roster bonus and $300K workout bonus in addition to his $700K salary, but Stallworth needs to have a stellar season in New England, on and off the field, to reap the total benefit of this contract.
New England holds $8M in roster/option bonuses in 2008, and as well as a $2M option bonus in 2009 and $500K workout bonuses in the final three years of the contract.

Patriots Snag Stallworth
The New England Patriots have agreed to terms on a 6-year deal with free agent WR Donte Stallworth. The contract is believed to be worth as much as $30M, with $12M guaranteed.
Stallworth spent the first 3 years of his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints before being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles before the start of the 2006 season. Stallworth is a talented WR capable of getting deep, but is reportedly in the league's substance abuse program. Because of this, I'd expect this contract to be a series of one-year deals, with the Patriots holding "guaranteed" roster bonuses due at the beginning of each NFL calendar year.

Seahawks Release Wistrom, Sign Grant
One Grant is out on the same day that another Grant is in. On Thursday, the Seattle Seahawks released veteran DE Grant Wistrom and signed veteran free agent safety Deon Grant.
Grant Wistrom, who Seattle signed in 2004 for 6-years and $33M that included a then club-record $14M signing bonus, had become expendable when the Seahawks signed DE Patrick Kerney to a 6-year/$39M contract that includes a new club-record $19.5M in guaranteed money.
After staying relatively healthy in his first 6 years in the NFL, Wistrom's first season in Seattle was marred by injuries that limited him to a career-low 9 games. In his three seasons in Seattle, Wistrom played in 41 of a possible 48 regular season games, totalling 98 tackles and 11.5 sacks.
Seahawks Sign S Deon Grant
ESPN.com's John Clayton has broken the news that the Seahawks have signed veteran safety Deon Grant (Jaguars) to a 6-year deal believed to be worth over $30M and includes the highest signing bonus ever given to an NFL safety. (No firm details of the deal have been released)
After the 49ers gave Michael Lewis, who had lost his starting job in Philadelphia, a 6-year/$30M with over $10M in guaranteed money, it's not surprising that another team would have to top that to sign a quality starting safety like Grant.
Grant likely moves into the starting spot vacated by unrestricted free agent Ken Hamlin, whom the Seahawks have made no effort to re-sign. Hamlin has visited with the New Orleans Saints, who are reportedly in heavy negotiations with former Bengals safety Kevin Kaesviharn. Hamlin suffered a fractured skull during a fight outside a Seattle nightclub on October 17th, 2005 that kept landed him in on IR during the Seahawks Super Bowl season.

Ravens Acquire McGahee from Bills
In the first 36 hours of free agency, Buffalo signed guards Jason Whittle and Derrick Dockery and tackle Langston Walker to improve the offensive line. Buffalo's top running back, Willis McGahee, was coming off a career-low 990 yards rushing in 14 games and improving the offensive line was thought to be a move that would increase the production of the offense's top player.
So naturally I'm a bit perplexed on why Buffalo has now opted to deal McGahee to the Baltimore Ravens for a trio of picks (3rd and 7th round picks this year, 3rd round in 2008).
McGahee may be entering the final year of his rookie contract, and certainly would be in line for a huge raise in 2008, but the Bills have ample cap room to absorb such a deal. When healthy, and provided with good blockers in front of him, McGahee is one of the better running backs in the NFL. Buffalo has now let their best player on defense (Nate Clements) and offense (McGahee) leave town this off-season.
It's worth noting that Buffalo's general manager, Marv Levy, turns 82 in August.

Schefter Hyping Another Broncos Move?
Adam Schefter, who spent a considerable amount of time covering the Denver Broncos before hitting the big time with the NFL Network, reports the Broncos signing of TE Daniel Graham with the following:
"Tuesday, March 6 The only problem with this report is that Tony Gonzalez signed a 5-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs that was worth $31.75M and included $17.5M in guaranteed money. I wasn't always the best math student, but it appears Gonzalez's contract is richer than Graham's.
Earlier this season, the Oakland Raiders downplayed a Schefter report that the Raiders were set to fire head coach Art Shell, referring to Schefter as a "false rumor monger with respect to the Raiders and anti-Raider based on his relationship with Denver and Mike Shanahan."
I'm not saying that Al Davis & Co. are right, but this could be a clear example of Schefter over-hyping a signing by the same Denver Broncos he's already accused of catering to.

Seahawks Sign DE Patrick Kerney
The Seattle Seahawks have agreed to a 6-year, $39.5M contract with former Atlanta Falcons DE Patrick Kerney, that includes $19.5M in guaranteed money.
Other NFL News
The New York Jets acquired RB Thomas Jones for the 37th pick in the 2007 NFL Draft...In other Chicago Bears news, franchised LB Lance Briggs refuses to play for the Chicago Bears organization.
Ahman Green has signed with the Houston Texans for 4-years and $23M.
Texas-sized OL Leonard Davis (6-6, 375) got a Texas-sized contract (7-years, $50M) to play for his hometown Dallas Cowboys.
And if Davis doesn't do his job properly, Brad Johnson will be the 'Boys QB.
New England sent 2nd and 7th round picks to the Miami Dolphins for restricted free agent Wes Welker. New England had drawn up a 7-year, $38.5M offer sheet that, as Adam Schefter reported on the NFL Network's Total Access, contained a poison pill that would've guaranteed the entire $38.5M if Welker played 4 games in the state of Florida in a season. Once Patriots owner Robert Kraft discovered this, he contacted Miami Dolphins owner Wayne Huzienga to attempt to resolve this issue amicably.
Kudos to Bob Kraft for intervening and stopping a situation that could've spiraled out of control. NFL executives condemned the poison pill deals Minnesota and Seattle exchanged a year ago, and while an attempt to close the door on the contractual loophole failed, it was clear from comments made by several NFL executives after last March's owners meetings that the practice of inserting poison pills would have to be policed from within.

Kris Dielman is reportedly taking (a lot) less money to stay in San Diego. After fellow free agent guards Eric Steinbach and Derrick Dockery signed 7-year/$49M+ contracts, Dielman has agreed to a contract worth just $40M over 6 years, including $17M in guaranteed money.

49ers Add Safety Michael Lewis
As if giving Nate Clements the richest contract for a defensive player in NFL history, the San Francisco 49ers have added to their secondary by signing former Philadelphia Eagles safety Michael Lewis.
In other news:
Both John Tomase (Boston Herald) and Mike Reiss (Boston Globe) are reporting that the New England Patriots will host DE/LB Adalius Thomas (Ravens) on Saturday, and one rival executive has told Tomase that it's a "done deal". Thomas should fetch megabucks, and the Patriots are not hesitant to give big money contracts to players like Thomas. A few years ago, they dug deep to pry Roosevelt Colvin away from the Chicago Bears, and aside from one injury-plagued season, that free agent signing has worked out well for the Patriots.
Adam Schefter reported tonight on the NFL Network that the Patriots have had running back Sammy Morris (Dolphins) in for a visit, and also played host to tight end Kyle Brady.
Mike Sando of the Tacoma News Tribune is reporting that free agent safety Ken Hamlin (Seahawks) is scheduled to visit with the New Orleans Saints on Saturday. Hamlin resides in nearby Houston, Texas in the off-season.

Browns Get Steinbach
It's easy to grin,
When your ship comes in,
And you've got the stock market beat
But the man worth while,
Is the man who can smile,
When his pants are too tight in the seat.

Chukwurah spent the first three years of his career in Minnesota, and the last three in Denver. With the Broncos, Chukwurah stepped out from the "special teamer" role and notched 4.5 sacks for the Broncos in 2006.
The most talked about play Chukwurah ever made was when he vomited on the field during a Sunday night game against the New England Patriots this season. Fortunately, YouTube has this clip readily available.

If Schefter is right (and he is well connected to the Broncos FO), this doesn't come as much of a surprise. Plummer has hinted at retirement in the last few months, and he is the type of guy who appears capable of walking away without regret.

Plummer Tampa Bound
Len Pasquarelli of ESPN.com is reporting that a trade that would send QB Jake Plummer from Denver to Tampa Bay for a 4th round draft choice in 2007 is a "near deal" and could be announced as early as today.
Mac's Instant Analysis: This trade makes sense, for both sides. Plummer has been replaced by Jay Cutler in Denver, and while Tampa Bay has Chris Simms and Bruce Gradkowski, head coach Jon Gruden can't be 100% sure what he has in either of them. Adding Plummer gives Gruden a veteran option at the QB position, and a 4th round draft choice is an acceptable price to pay for that kind of security.

Jags to Sign Tony Pashos
And the second free agent to relocate is in.
Jacksonville.com is reporting that Tony Pashos, a 6-6 320-pound offensive tackle, will sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars once he passes a physical.
That makes two signings, and two offensive lineman. With Kris Dielman visiting the Seahawks and Eric Steinbach in Cleveland (to check out the boating areas on Lake Erie), it's clear that NFL teams understand how important the offensive line is.

Mike Reiss, the stellar New England Patriots beat writer for the Boston Globe, is reporting that the Patriots will host tight end Kyle Brady today at Gillette Stadium.
Brady has some familiarity with Bill Belichick from their New York Jets days, and it's a good thing Brady has spent time in the Northeast because the weather here in Boston today is miserable.

Titans Pass on Clements
New Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt has a reputation of being fiscally disciplined when it comes to free agents.
That said, it's not surprising that Terry McCormick of the Nashville City Paper is reporting that the Titans have "bowed out" of the pursuit for Nate Clements, the top CB in this free agent class.
The recent brouhaha involving Adam "Pacman" Jones has many believing the Titans have no choice but to release him. That possibility is one reason why people assumed Tennessee would be interested in Clements. Clearly, the cost of signing Clements, combined with the cap hit the Titans would take for releasing Jones, was too great for Reinfeldt to continue the pursuit.

Still No Major Deals
It's 10:33am on the east coast, and aside from the Bills signing of guard Jason Whittle, there isn't much to report.
John Clayton of ESPN.com has a story about who has meetings lined up, and Adam Schefter was on WEEI this morning in Boston stating that the Patriots may go after former Baltimore Ravens outside linebacker Adalius Thomas. The First Free Agent to Sign Is...
Jason Whittle.
Whittle, an 8-year veteran who played for the Minnesota Vikings in 2006, has reached an agreement with the Buffalo Bills.
Should be a very busy day in free agency. Of the top free agents, Kris Dielman is making Seattle his first visit, while the other top FA guard, Eric Steinbach, visits with the Cleveland Browns. Daniel Graham, the top free agent tight end, is visiting with the Denver Broncos on Friday before heading off to visit the Oakland Raiders. Denver is also hosting former Falcons DE Patrick Kerney, who also has a visit planned for Saturday with the Seahawks.

Pre-Free Agency Releases
On the eve of free agency, several NFL teams bid adieu to high-priced veterans, extended the contracts of some key players, and made tender offers to potential restricted free agents.
San Diego released WR Keenan McCardell, S Terrence Kiel, and LB Steve "Holy" Foley, Pittsburgh released LB/Mouth Joey Porter, Dallas released QB Drew Bledsoe, Minnesota released TE Jermaine Wiggins and CB Fred "Cap'n" Smoot, and New Orleans released veteran WR Joe Horn.
Other teams opted to re-sign a few veterans. Tampa Bay signed FB Mike Alstott to a one-year contract and the New York Jets reached a long-term deal with WR Jerricho Cotchery. Word tonight is that Cleveland has re-signed C Hank Fraley and the Giants reached an agreement with their center, Shaun O'Hara.
We're 90 minutes from the start of free agency, and by this tomorrow night, there will be many wealthy players off the board.

Broncos Acquire CB Dre Bly
Denver has acquired CB Dre Bly from the Detroit Lions for RB Tatum Bell and OT George Foster.
This is a solid move for the Broncos, and a slightly curious move by the Lions. After the tragic death of Darrent Williams, the Broncos were in need of a cornerback to pair with All-Pro Champ Bailey. Bly is a veteran, a two-time Pro Bowler with Super Bowl experience. The addition of Bly gives the Broncos one of the best CB tandems in the NFL.
For Detroit, adding Tatum Bell makes sense. RB Kevin Jones is likely to miss a significant portion of 2007 and Bell gives them the starting caliber running back they need. The Lions offensive line was horrendous in 2006, and a guy like Foster could help immediately.
But with the Lions holding the 2nd pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, and two of the top 5 prospects available are LT Joe Thomas (Wisconsin) and RB Adrian Peterson (Oklahoma), couldn't the Lions have addressed those needs then?
Oh wait, Matt Millen was involved. Now it makes sense.
